    • The increasing demand for electricity and the penetration of renewable energy resources into the electrical grid are triggering the electric power system to undergo changes and complex modifications at high, medium and low voltage levels. There are large and complex projects such as Smart Grid Gotland to deploy solutions to address such challenges. However, there are several scenarios that could be more practical to be first studied via simulations. As such, the purpose of this paper is to propose and develop a co-simulation platform that allows performing real-time monitoring and control tests and simulations for MV/LV grids. This platform combines both electrical, and information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure simulations. It consists of a real-time power system simulator (Opal-RT) connected to a communication network simulator (OPNET) through an automatic meter reading interface that is based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and low cost devices such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino boards. The platform allows the analysis of realistic MV/LV grids and communication networks, and will facilitate the simulation and comparison of low voltage control strategies for real-time test scenarios that could be more complicated to test otherwise in real-life due to cost and complexity aspects , i.e., high power losses on the low voltage grid.

    • This paper presents validation experiments performed on a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) based fast oscillation detection application. The monitoring application focuses on the detection of sub-synchronous oscillations, utilizing real-time measurements from PMUs. The application was first tested through Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulation. Validation experiments were carried out with a different set-up by utilizing a micro grid laboratory. This second experimental set-up as well as the results of the validation experiments are presented in this paper.

    • The EU challenges for the future energy systems will change the scene of the energy systems in Europe. A transition from centralized controlled power network to customer oriented Smart Grid operating in distributed and deregulated energy market poses several regulatory, organizational and technical challenges. In such a market scenarios, multiple stakeholders provide services to produce and deliver energy. Due to the inclusion of new stakeholders at multiple levels there is a lack of purposeful monitoring based on pre-negotiated SLAs. Hence, there exists a gap to actively monitor KPIs values among all negotiated SLAs (Service Level Agreements). This paper addresses SLA based active monitoring of information flow. The proposed SLA framework provides monitoring based on negotiated KPIs in an automated and trustworthy way to coordinate information flow. In the end a use case is presented to validate the SLA framework.

  • Partitioning Power Grids via Nonlinear Koopman Mode Analysis

    • This paper proposes a new method for partitioning power grids based on the nonlinear Koopman Mode Analysis (KMA). Grid partitioning is the fundamental problem in the controlled islanding strategy. The KMA is a new technique of nonlinear modal decomposition based on properties of the point spectrum of the so-called Koopman operator. The key idea in the proposed method is to determine a set of islanded sub-grids using KMA of data on voltage angle dynamics of every bus. The method is numerically investigated with the IEEE 118-bus test system. It is shown that the proposed method provides partitions on a multiple frequency scale as well as captures the intrinsic structural properties of a grid characterized by spectral graph theory.

    • Development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) increases the communication capability of equipment in power system and also creates large number of data sources. In order to reliably share these data sources with applications is a new challenge for power system. This paper presents an alternate data delivery system solution using IEC61850 standard Manufactory Messaging Specification (MMS) across wide area networks, utilizing Distributed Hash Table (DHT) for look-up of Logical Nodes addresses.  Result of the proposed scheme is a flexible, autonomous, scalable, and robust method to address Logical Nodes across a Wide Area Network. In comparison with IEC61850-90-2 solution, this solution can help reduce the manual work in configuration of each link, and enables greater flexibility for adding new data points. The presented platform also opens door of providing adaptive data acquisition for power system applications by implementing a filtering function in the ISG.
