Inferring Dislocation Recombination Strength in Multicrystalline Silicon via Etch Pit Geometry Analysis

- Dislocations limit solar cell performance by decreasing minority carrier diffusion length, leading to inefficient charge collection at the device contacts [1]. However, studies have shown that the recombination strength of dislocation clusters within millimeters away from each other can vary by orders of magnitude [2]. In this contribution, we present correlations between dislocation microstructure and recombination activity levels which span close to two orders of magnitude. We discuss a general trend observed: higher dislocation recombination activity appears to be correlated with a higher degree of impurity decoration, and a higher degree of disorder in the spatial distribution of etch pits. We present an approach to quantify the degree of disorder of dislocation clusters. Based on our observations, we hypothesize that the recombination activity of different dislocation clusters can be predicted by visual inspection of the etch pit distribution and geometry.

- The Swedish PV market is still limited compared to many other countries in Europe. However, the growth is strong. 19 MW was installed in 2013 showing that the market more than doubled during 2013 in comparison to 2012. Hence there is of interest to more in detail study the profitability of PV electricity in Sweden for grid connected PV systems, to understand how competitive PV is on the Swedish market. LCOE and payback period are presented for a PV system that is installed to replace retail electricity with PV electricity. Both the cases of private residential systems and of non-private systems are considered.

- The role of the hole-transport layer (HTL) in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells is investigated. It is found that it mainly serves three purposes: First, deposited prior to the gold electrode, it avoids direct contact of the metal electrode with the meso porous TiO2-perovskite layer, and therefore increases the selectivity of the contact. This reduces recombination as evident from an increased open-circuit voltage and a higher luminescence efficiency. Second, the HTL increases the internal quantum efficiency independent of applied voltage and illumination wavelength by reducing (diffusion) losses of charges. Third, due to a smoothing of the TiO2-perovskite mesoscopic layer the HTL increases the reflectivity of the gold electrode, allowing for a second path of the light through the absorber. Both effects result in an enhancement of the short-circuit current density.
