  • Min-max fair car-parking slot assignment
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the WoWMoM 2015. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479984619
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Empirical studies show that cruising for car parking accounts for a non-negligible amount of the daily traffic, especially in central areas of large cities. Therefore, mechanisms for minimizing traffic from cruising directly affect the dynamics of traffic congestions. One way to minimizing cruising traffic is efficient car-parking-slot assignment. Usually, the related design problems are combinatorial and the worst-case complexity of optimal methods grows exponentially with the problem sizes. As a result, almost all existing methods for parking slot assignment are simple and greedy approaches, where each car or the user is assigned a free parking slot, which is closer to its destination. Moreover, no emphasis is placed to optimize any form of fairness among the users as the a social benefit. In this paper, the fairness as a metric for modeling the aggregate social benefit of the users is considered. An algorithm based on Lagrange duality is developed for car-parking-slot assignment. Numerical results illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm compared to the optimal assignment and a greedy method.

  • QoE-aware optimization for video delivery and storage
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on "A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks" (WoWMoM) 2015. - Boston, MA, USA. - 9781479984619 ; , s. 1-10

    • The explosive growth of Over-the-top (OTT) online video strains capacity of operators’ networks, which severely threatens video quality perceived by end users. Since video is very bandwidth consuming, its distribution costs are becoming too high to scale with network investments that are required to support the increasing bandwidth demand. Content providers and operators are searching for solutions to reduce this video traffic load, without degrading their customers’ perceived Quality ofExperience (QoE). This paper proposes a method that can programmatically optimize video content for desired QoE accordingto perceptual video quality and device display properties, while achieving bandwidth and storage savings for content providers, operators, and end users. The preliminary results obtained with Samsung Galaxy S3 phone show that up to 60% savings can be achieved by optimizing movies without compromising the perceptible video quality, and up to 70% for perceptible, but not annoying video quality difference. Tailoring video optimization to individual user perception can provide seamless QoE delivery across all users, with a low overhead (i.e., 10%) required to achieve this goal. Finally, two applications of video optimization: QoE-aware delivery and storage, are proposed and examined.

  • Characterizing opportunistic communication with churn for crowd-counting
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the WoWMoM 2015. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479984619
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In opportunistic networking, characterizing contact patterns between mobile users is essential for assessing feasibility and performance of opportunistic applications. There has been significant efforts in deriving this characterization, based on observations and trace analyses; however, most of the findings arise from studying contact opportunities at large spatial and temporal scales. Moreover, the user population is considered to be constant: no users can join or leave the system. Yet, there are many examples of scenarios which do not fully adhere to the previous assumption and cannot be accurately described at large scales. Urban environments, such as smaller city districts, are characterized by highly dynamic user populations. We believe that scenarios with varying population requires further investigation. In this paper, we present a novel modeling approach to study operation of opportunistic applications in scenarios where the population size is subjected to frequent changes, that is, it exhibits churn. We also propose an application for estimating the size of a mobile crowd, which we then use to validate our model in four scenarios: a city area, subway station, a conference and a scenario with a synthetic mobility model. We show that the model provides good representations of the investigated scenarios.

  • WARPSim:A Code-Transparent Network Simulator for WARP
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM), 2015 IEEE 16th International Symposium on a. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479984619 ; , s. 1-3
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analyzing a communication protocol by means of simulation and real-world experimentation requires careful protocol implementation in both domains. Differences in the implementation may lead to significantly diverging performance results, which may affect the protocol design process adversely. A code-transparent simulation and experimentation framework for Wireless Access Research Platform (WARP) devices is proposed, which is called WARPsim. By extending the simulation engine appropriately, the same application code that runs on WARP devices can be used for simulation. This work studies the implications of this approach using the example of implementing time-critical Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) protocols on WARP devices. In the demonstration, various MAC protocols will be simulated using WARPsim, while changing protocol parameters, but also crucial aspects of the emulated hardware. A graphical representation integrated into the framework allows for an intuitive examination of the protocol behavior.
