  • Clustering-based separation of media transfers in DPI-classified cellular video and VoIP traffic
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC). - : IEEE. - 9781538617342 - 9781538617359
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identifying VoIP and video traffic is often useful in the context of managing a cellular network, and to perform such traffic classification deep packet inspection (DPI) approaches are often used. Commercial DPI classifiers do not necessarily differentiate between, for example, YouTube traffic that arises from browsing inside the YouTube app, and traffic arising from the actual viewing of a YouTube video. Here we apply unsupervised clustering methods on such cellular DPI-labeled VoIP and video traffic to identify the characteristic behavior of the two sub-groups of media-transfer and non media-transfer flows. The analysis is based on a measurement campaign performed inside the core network of a commercial cellular operator, collecting data for more than two billion packets in 40+ million flows. A specially instrumented commercial DPI appliance allows the simultaneous collection of per packet information in addition to the DPI classification output. We show that the majority of flows falls into clusters that are easily identifiable as belonging to one of the traffic sub-groups, and that a surprising majority of DPIlabeled VoIP and video traffic is non-media related.

  • Scalable Resource Allocation for Dynamic TDD with Traffic and Propagation Awareness
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING CONFERENCE (WCNC). - : IEEE. - 9781538617342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a scalable scheduler for dynamic TDD systems in ultra-dense indoor deployments applicable to diverse traffic and radio propagation conditions. To minimize signalling for the channel estimation and feedback, the proposed scheduler employs offline BS-to-BS measurements to approximate the real interference for different traffic conditions. Thus, no CSI is required once the network is online. Furthermore, we show that signalling can be further reduced by considering only meaningful interferers above a received power threshold for the traffic information exchange. To perform the scheduling, a function that maps interference into individual BS activation probabilities is also introduced. Results show that the proposed scheme performs reasonably well in high interference situations compared to comparable scalable schedulers, and optimally when interference is low, both in average and 5th percentile sense.

  • Interference-aware Distributed Control of Cell Discontinuous Transmission
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING CONFERENCE (WCNC). - : IEEE. - 9781538617342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a main enabler for the next generation (5G) cellular networks, network densification faces challenges in intercell interference and energy consumption. Cell discontinuous transmission (DTX) can be employed to reduce both energy consumption of base stations (BSs) and inter-cell interference. In this paper we study the control problem of cell DTX in dense small cell networks (DSCNs). We firstly formulate the network energy efficiency optimization problem. Then a centralized heuristic DTX control algorithm is presented. In order to address the issues of complexity and scalability of the centralized solution, an interference-aware distributed DTX control algorithm is proposed. Discussions on algorithm complexity and implementation are provided. The proposed algorithms are evaluated with numerical simulations. Results show that at high load region, the proposed algorithms can not only enhance network capacity by reducing inter-cell interference by up to 60% but also increase network energy efficiency by switching BSs into micro-sleep mode by 67%.

  • Impact of Imperfect Beam Alignment on the Rate-Positioning Trade-Off
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, WCNC. - 1525-3511. - 9781538617342 ; 2018-April
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the beam-training procedure in the future 5G millimeter-wave systems and collect position information based on the received signals. We analyze the degradation due to beam misalignment on the achievable rate and on the amount of information available for positioning. We evaluate the performance of two beam-training strategies, namely, exhaustive and hierarchical. Our results reveal new insights on the trade-off between positioning and communication performance.

  • Cross-Layer Optimization of Wireless Links under Reliability and Energy Constraints
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, WCNC. - New York : IEEE. - 9781538617342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vision of connecting billions of battery operated devices to be used for diverse emerging applications calls for a wireless communication system that can support stringent reliability and latency requirements. Both reliability and energy efficiency are critical for many of these applications that involve communication with short packets which undermine the coding gain achievable from large packets. In this paper, we study a cross-layer approach to optimize the performance of low-power wireless links. At first, we derive a simple and accurate packet error rate (PER) expression for uncoded schemes in block fading channels based on a new proposition that shows that the waterfall threshold in the PER upper bound in Nakagami-m fading channels is tightly approximated by the m-th moment of an asymptotic distribution of PER in AWGN channel. The proposed PER approximation establishes an explicit connection between the physical and link layers parameters, and the packet error rate. We exploit this connection for cross-layer design and optimization of communication links. To this end, we propose a semi-analytic framework to jointly optimize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and modulation order at physical layer, and the packet length and number of retransmissions at link layer with respect to distance under the prescribed delay and reliability constraints.

  • Throughput Analysis of Large-but-Finite MIMO Networks using Schedulers
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, WCNC. - 1525-3511. - 9781538617342 ; 2018-April
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the sum throughput of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) networks in the cases with large but finite number of transmit and receive data terminals. We develop an efficient scheduling scheme using genetic algorithms (GAs), and evaluate the effect of various parameters, such as channel/precoding models, number of antennas/users, scheduling costs and power amplifiers efficiency, on the system performance. Also, considering continuous and bursty communication scenarios with different users' data request probabilities, we derive closed-form expressions for the maximum achievable throughput of the MIMO networks using optimal schedulers. As we show, our proposed GA-based scheduler reaches (almost) the same throughput as in the exhaustive search-based optimal scheduler, with substantially less implementation complexity. Also, the power amplifiers inefficiency affect the network throughput significantly. For instance, consider a MIMO setup with a 40-antenna base station, 60 users, total consumed power of 26 dB, continuous communications and the typical parameter settings of the power amplifiers. Then, the network throughput decreases by 50% when the power amplifiers efficiency reduces from 75% to 25%.

  • Remote Control of Automated Vehicles over Unreliable Channels
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, WCNC. - 1525-3511. - 9781538617342 ; 2018-April
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the problem of controlling a vehicle moving towards an intersection by means of a remote controller over an unreliable channel. This channel affects both uplink communication (when the vehicle sends its state information to the controller) and downlink information (when the vehicle receives control actions from the controller). We propose a probabilistic framework to compute control actions at the controller in the presence of such unreliable communications. The controller is evaluated under different channel conditions and compared to two nominal controllers, one that assumes perfect communication and one that assumes no communication. We find that for low packet loss rates, the proposed controller leads to less aggressive control actions than the former and generally lower cost than the latter. We additionally consider the mismatch between the perceived knowledge of the channel at the controller, and the actual channel conditions. We evaluate the performance of our controller under this mismatch, which is of interest when the controller is designed.

  • Revisiting the Modeling of User Association Patterns in a University Wireless Network
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING CONFERENCE (WCNC). - : IEEE. - 9781538617342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an analysis of a large trace of user associations in a university wireless network, which includes around one thousand access points over live campuses. The trace is obtained from RADIUS authentication logs and its merit is in its recency, scale and duration. We propose a methodology for extracting association statistics from these logs, and look at visiting time distributions and processes of user arrivals to access points. We find that a large fraction of the network-around half of all access points-experiences time-varying Poisson arrival process, and association distributions can be modeled by two-stage hyper-exponential distributions at most of the access point. While network associations in campus wireless networks have been extensively studied in the literature, our study reveals changing patterns in user arrival processes and association durations, which seem to be characteristic for networks of predominantly mobile users, and allows the use of tractable network occupancy models.

  • Transferring Knowledge for Tilt-Dependent Radio Map Prediction
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING CONFERENCE (WCNC). - : IEEE. - 9781538617342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fifth generation wireless networks (5G) will face key challenges caused by diverse patterns of traffic demands and massive deployment of heterogeneous access points. In order to handle this complexity, machine learning techniques are expected to play a major role. However, due to the large space of parameters related to network optimization, collecting data to train models for all possible network configurations can be prohibitive. In this paper, we analyze the possibility of performing a knowledge transfer, in which a machine learning model trained on a particular network configuration is used to predict a quantity of interest in a new, unknown setting. We focus on the tilt-dependent received signal strength maps as quantities of interest and we analyze two cases where the knowledge acquired for a particular antenna tilt setting is transferred to (i) a different tilt configuration of the same antenna or (ii) a different antenna with the same tilt configuration. Promising results supporting knowledge transfer are obtained through extensive experiments conducted using different machine learning models on a real dataset.

  • Adapting the Number of Antennas and Power to Traffic Load : When to Turn on Massive MIMO?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781538617342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we consider the downlink of a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system and aim to find the jointly optimal number of base station (BS) antennas and transmission powers that minimize the power consumption while satisfying each user's signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) constraint and the BS's power constraint. Different from prior work, we consider a power consumption model that takes both transmitted and hardware-consumed power into account. We formulate the joint optimization problem for a singlecell system and derive closed-form expressions for the optimal number of BS antennas and transmission powers. The solution can be utilized in practice to turn on and off antennas depending on the traffic load variations. Substantial power savings are demonstrated by simulation.
