  • Novel QoS-Aware Physical Layer Security Analysis Considering Random Inter-node Distances
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC). - : IEEE. - 9781538680889 - 9781538680896
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physical layer security (PLS) in wireless communication has gained recent attention due to the emergence of new technological breakthroughs in this space. Since the internode distances have been noted to play a key role in the desired security performance, we propose a novel quality-of-service-aware PLS model that incorporates the random spatial deployment of the legitimate users and a potential attacker. This proposed model considers practical constraints like maximum separation between legitimate users and eavesdropping capability of attacker. In this regard, a novel concept of eavesdropping zone is also introduced. Eventually, closed-form expressions are derived for secrecy outage probability using the probabilistic inter-node distance distributions between the legitimate users and attacker to shed key analytical insights like optimal parameter designing to achieve a desired secrecy performance. Lastly, specific simulation results, presented to validate the analytical claims and provide key secured system designing perspectives, corroborate the potential of the proposed framework for more accurately characterizing the desired PLS performance from both the legitimate users and attackers point-of-view.

  • On the Energy Efficiency of Limited-Backhaul Cell-Free Massive MIMO
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC). - : IEEE. - 9781538680889 - 9781538680896
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the energy efficiency performance of cell-free Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), where the access points (APs) are connected to a central processing unit (CPU) via limited-capacity links. Thanks to the distributed maximum ratio combining (MRC) weighting at the APs, we propose that only the quantized version of the weighted signals are sent back to the CPU. Considering the effects of channel estimation errors and using the Bussgang theorem to model the quantization errors, an energy efficiency maximization problem is formulated with per-user power and backhaul capacity constraints as well as with throughput requirement constraints. To handle this non-convex optimization problem, we decompose the original problem into two sub-problems and exploit a successive convex approximation (SCA) to solve original energy efficiency maximization problem. Numerical results confirm the superiority of the proposed optimization scheme.

  • IntOpt: In-Band Network Telemetry Optimization for NFV Service Chain Monitoring
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) Próceedings. - : IEEE. - 9781538680896 - 9781538680889
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Managing and scaling virtual network function(VNF) service chains require the collection and analysis ofnetwork statistics and states in real time. Existing networkfunction virtualization (NFV) monitoring frameworks either donot have the capabilities to express the range of telemetryitems needed to perform management or do not scale tolarge traffic volumes and rates. We present IntOpt, a scalableand expressive telemetry system designed for flexible VNFservice chain network monitoring using active probing. IntOptallows to specify monitoring requirements for individual servicechain, which are mapped to telemetry item collection jobsthat fetch the required telemetry items from P4 (programmingprotocol-independent packet processors) programmable dataplaneelements. In our approach, the SDN controller creates theminimal number of monitoring flows to monitor the deployedservice chains as per their telemetry demands in the network. We propose a simulated annealing based random greedy metaheuristic(SARG) to minimize the overhead due to activeprobing and collection of telemetry items. Using P4-FPGA, webenchmark the overhead for telemetry collection and compareour simulated annealing based approach with a na¨ıve approachwhile optimally deploying telemetry collection probes. Ournumerical evaluation shows that the proposed approach canreduce the monitoring overhead by 39% and the total delays by57%. Such optimization may as well enable existing expressivemonitoring frameworks to scale for larger real-time networks.

  • Watch your step! Detecting stepping stones in programmable networks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC). - : IEEE. - 9781538680889 - 9781538680896
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hackers hide behind compromised intermediate hosts and pose advanced persistent threats (APTs). The compromised hosts are used as stepping stones to launch real attacks, as is evident from an incident that shook the world in 2016 - Panama Papers Leak. The major attack would not go unnoticed if the compromised stepping stone, in this case an email server, could be identified in time. In this paper, we explore how todays programmable networks could be retrofitted with effective stepping stone detection mechanisms to correlate flows. We share initial results to prove that such a setup exists. Lastly, we analyze scalability issues associated with the setup and explore recent developments in network monitoring which have potential to address these issues.

  • LTE-WLAN Aggregation with Bursty Data Traffic and Randomized Flow Splitting
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC). - : IEEE. - 9781538680889 - 9781538680896
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the effect of bursty traffic in an LTE and Wi-Fi aggregation (LWA)-enabled network, where part of the LTE traffic is offloaded to Wi-Fi access points (APs) to boost the performance of LTE networks. A Wi-Fi AP maintains two queues containing data intended for the LWA-mode user and the native Wi-Fi user, and it is allowed to serve them simultaneously by using superposition coding (SC). With respect to the existing works on LWA, the novelty of our study consists of a random access protocol allowing the Wi-Fi AP to serve the native Wi-Fi user with probabilities that depend on the queue size of the LWA-mode data. We analyze the throughput of the native Wi-Fi network, accounting for different transmitting probabilities of the queues, the traffic flow splitting between LTE and Wi-Fi, and the operating mode of the LWA user with both LTE and Wi-Fi interfaces. Our results provide fundamental insights in the throughput behavior of such aggregated systems, which are essential for further investigation in larger topologies.

  • Dynamic Scheduling and Power Control in Uplink Massive MIMO with Random Data Arrivals
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC). - : IEEE. - 9781538680889 - 9781538680896
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study the joint power control and scheduling in uplink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with random data arrivals. The data is generated at each user according to an individual stochastic process. Using Lyapunov optimization techniques, we develop a dynamic scheduling algorithm (DSA), which decides at each time slot the amount of data to admit to the transmission queues and the transmission rates over the wireless channel. The proposed algorithm achieves nearly optimal performance on the long-term user throughput under various fairness policies. Simulation results show that the DSA can improve the time-average delay performance compared to the state-of-the-art power control schemes developed for Massive MIMO with infinite backlogs.

  • A Queue-based Random Access Scheme in Network-level Cooperative Wireless Networks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC). - : IEEE. - 9781538680889
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we consider a relay assisted adaptive queue-aware cooperative random access wireless network with multipacket (MPR) reception capabilities. The network consists of N sources transmitting packets to a common destination node with the aid of two relay nodes equipped with queues. The relays assist the sources by forwarding the packets that failed to reach the destination, by using a queue-based transmission control mechanism. Moreover, the relays have also their own traffic. We investigate the stability conditions and the throughput performance of the network for the full MPR channel model. Moreover, we derive expressions for the average queueing delay with the aid of the theory of boundary value problems for the asymmetric two-user network. We evaluate numerically the presented theoretical analysis.

  • Performance Analysis of Cell-Free Massive MIMO Over Spatially Correlated Fading Channels
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC). - : IEEE. - 9781538680889 - 9781538680896
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising network architecture for future wireless systems. This paper investigates the uplink performance of cell-free massive MIMO systems employing the least-square (LS) estimator over spatially correlated fading channels. We first derive a generalized closed-form expression of the spectral efficiency as a function of the number of access point (AP) antennas and the spatial correlation matrices. We use this result to analyze the impact that the fronthaul, number of users and number of APs have on the energy efficiency. Compared to traditional colocated massive MIMO using maximum ratio combining (MRC), our analysis shows that the large performance gain of cell-free massive MIMO with low-complexity linear LS estimators.

  • Performance Analysis of Distributed SIMO Physical Layer Authentication
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781538680889
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a new approach for physical layer authentication where transmissions are authenticated based on the single-input/multiple-output channel-states observed at multiple distributed antenna-arrays. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) are derived in terms of closed form expressions for the false alarm and missed detection probability in order to evaluate the effectiveness compared to single-array authentication. To this end, we study the worst-case missed detection probability based on the optimal attacker position. Finally, we apply our previously developed queueing analytical tools, based on stochastic network calculus, in order to assess the delay performance impacts of the physical layer authentication scheme in a mission-critical communication scenario. Our results show that the distributed approach significantly outperforms single-array authentication in terms of worst-case missed detection probability and that this can help mitigating the delay performance impacts of authentication false alarms.

  • Combined Optimal Topology Formation and Rate Allocation for Aircraft to Aircraft Communications
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781538680889
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Providing broadband in-flight Internet connectivity to aircraft is challenging. Today's options include satellite communications (SC) and direct air-to-ground communication (DA2GC). To overcome data rate, delay and cost limitations of SC and coverage limitations of DA2GC, one can extend DA2GC with air-to-air communication (A2AC) by enabling multi-hop communication. To investigate the A2AC performance, we construct a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem of DA2GC and A2AC, jointly considering interference in topology formation and flow assignment. Our objective is to maximize the number of aircraft that can be connected with a given specific minimum data rate threshold. The evaluation is performed for low aircraft density scenarios over the North Atlantic. We show that in the investigated scenarios, over 90 % of aircraft can have at least 50 Mbps, some being up to 1600 kilometers away from the closest base station (BS). Furthermore, we identify antenna capabilities as an important factor for A2AC performance.
