- Electro-Absorption-Transceiver (EAT) structures used as efficient Travelling-Wave Electro-Absorption-Modulator (TWEAM) as well as Travelling-Wave-Photo-Detector (TWPD) are investigated. Clear eye-openings at 100Gb/s for operation as modulator and/or as detector, as well as 80Gb/s transmission between a pair of EATs, are presented.

- In this presentation the latest results on volume Bragg grating locked fiber lasers will be reviewed. This novel technique provides one to two orders of magnitude improved spectral brightness, improved temporal stability and at least equally efficient lasing as when ordinary dielectric mirrors are used. Results on tuning and photodarkening resistant fiber lasers are also presented, as well as some results where the lasers are used in nonlinear optics.

- Utilizing the lag effect in dry etching, a nonuniform silicon-on-insulator grating coupler is designed and fabricated. Over 80% (>-1dB) coupling efficiency is theoretically obtained and experimental coupling efficiency of 55% is achieved for TE polarization.
