    • We experimentally investigate parametric downconversion approaching zero group velocity dispersion in Mg-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3. Pumping in the 820-842 nm range yields a 14 THz gain bandwidth with signal (idler) wavelengths around 1.23 mu m (2.66 mu m).

    • The complex interplay by tunneling and scattering in quantum cascade lasers is analyzed with nonequilibrium Green's functions. Data for a recently proposed simple structure based on only two wells per period is presented. This simple structure allows to visualize the relevance of the tunneling resonance very clearly. It is argued that a QCL design needs at least three levels per period, thus further simplifications of the design are not likely to occur for THz lasers. Finally the similarities and differences between quantum cascade lasers and superlattices are addressed. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

    • We report here experimental demonstration of flexible solar cells based on crystalline semiconductor nanomembranes (NMs) transferred onto flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) substrates. For 1 micrometer thick p-i-n InP NMs, we obtained an open circuit voltage of 0.68 V and power efficiency of 1.5% from the photovoltaic solar cells. The results agree very well with the anticipated thin film InP solar cell performance considering the low absorption in very thin InP NMs. The efficiency remains unchanged for bending radii greater than 42 mm. It drops to 50% of its original value at a bending radius of 32 mm. The results demonstrate a promising future for such, a new type of cost effective flexible thin film solar cells, based on crystalline semiconductor membranes.

    • We present periodic poling of Rb-doped KTiOPO4. The crystal is used to obtain blue radiation at 398 nm with an efficiency of 30% and a peak intensity of 2 MW/cm2 without grey-tracking.
