  • The convergence theory on ICT, society, and human beings : Towards the good ICT society
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Information and Communication Technologies, Society and Human Beings. - : IGI Global. - 9781609600570 ; , s. 30-46
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The convergence model illustrates ongoing changes in the Net Society. The theoretical model synthesises the theoretical framework in the author's research on the psychosocial work environment and computerization. Interdisciplinary research programs were initiated by the author in the 1970s, leading to analysis of societal changes related to various periods in 'the history' of ICT. The description of the convergence model is structured with reference to the core concepts of Globalisation, ICT, Life Environment, Life Role, and Effects on Humans. Convergence and Interactions are important features of the model that organizes analysis at the individual, organisational, community, and societal levels.

  • Psychosocial Life Environment and Life Roles in Interaction with Daily Use of Information Communication Technology Boundaries between Work and Leisure
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Information and Communication Technologies, Society and Human Beings: Theory and Framework. - Hershey : IGI Global. - 9781609600570 - 1609600576 ; , s. 266-282
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The presence of ICT (Information Communication Technology) in our psychosocial work environment and in our personal lives, has increased rapidly during the past 40 years. This way of interacting with ICT is often characterized in terms of access to information and social networks with the possibility of being independent of time and place. Every person’s psychosocial health is influenced by their life environment; a combination of their work and home environments, their life roles and of their social networks. People who work professionally in the field of ICT or use ICT in their work experience a blurring between their professional and private roles. However, when people’s experience of work and leisure becomes blurred, this may impact on their psychosocial health. They need to develop strategies to create ways of allowing time for recovery. In this chapter we present a review of the literature that identifies the effects that cause a blurring of the line between work and leisure. Moreover, we present some examples of strategies for managing the blurring of contexts facilitated by ICT. Presented research combines theories from the fields of psychology, informatics and work science.

  • Usable privacy-enhancing Identity Management : Challenges and Approaches
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Information and Communication Technologies, Society and Human Beings. - Hershey PA : IGI Global. - 9781609600570 ; , s. 172-189
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A critical success factor for Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), and for Privacy-Enhancing Identity Management in particular, will be user-friendly and intelligible user interfaces that are legally compliant and convey trust. Such user interfaces have to meet challenges such as the user-friendly representation of complex PET concepts (such as “pseudonyms”, “unlinkabilty” or “anonymous credentials”) that are unfamiliar to many users, the provision of security, the enforcement of legal privacy principles, such as informed consent or transparency, as well as the mediation of reliable trust to the end users. In this paper, we will discuss such challenges for usable privacy-enhancing identity management and will provide some HCI guidelines for addressing those challenges.

  • In Search for Unity within the Diversity of Information Societies
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Information and Communication Technologies, Society and Human Beings: Theory and Framework (Festschrift in honor of Gunilla Bradley). - Hershey, New York : IGI Global. - 9781609600570 - 1609600576 ; , s. 540-546
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This final Chapter represents the responsibility, the privilege but also the aspiration of the two editors of this Gunilla Bradley Festschrift. The aspiration here is no less than to identify a key message that emerges out of the contributions in this volume considered as a whole. In other words, the question here is: what do all this research and reasoning say to us? Of course, each reader of this Volume will derive her or his own interpretation and thus also a key message, which we only see as the richness offered by this Festschrift. Therefore, the key message presented here must be regarded only as one possible message that is formed by the two editors’ own predispositions: intellectual, cultural, motivational, and other.

  • Critical systems thinking and information technology : some summary reflections, doubts, and hopes through critical thinking critically considered, and through hypersystems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Information and communication technologies, society and human beings. - : IGI Global. - 9781609600570 - 9781609600594 ; , s. 493-514
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter presents a summary of some features of soft systems methodology-SSM, and of critical systems thinking-CST as they have been experienced from the point of view of the field of applications of information technology. It highlights the manner in which CST completes SSM in the context of the design of computer support in the form of HYPERSYSTEMS, and evidences some problematic aspects of the two approaches which push the practitioner into philosophical issues. One concluding hypothesis is that further developments of systems practice must be sought at the interface between formal science, political ethics, analytic psychology, and religious thought. For tutorial purposes, a great amount of literature is related to these issues.

  • Why do the orders go wrong all the time? : exploring sustainability in an e-commerce application in Swedish public school kitchens
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Information and communication technologies, society and human beings. - Oslo : Universitetet i Oslo. - 9781609600570 - 9781609600594 ; , s. 419-433
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we discuss sustainability, particularly social and cultural sustainability, in relation to an e-commerce application used in the kitchen of a Swedish public school. The notion of sustainability got its public definition through the Brundtland Commission and the report Our Common Future in which ecological as well as economic and social dimensions were underlined. An additional dimension, culture, has recently unfolded. The data reported in this paper were collected in public school and pre-school meal production. This is a large, institutional, tax-funded activity in Sweden as all pre-schools, compulsory schools and most upper secondary schools serve free lunch to the children and students. We discuss how an e-commerce application complicated the daily routines in the school kitchen rather than making the ordering of food stuff easier or more flexible and how small things that mattered in the staff’s day-to-day activities shed light on the application’s problems and weaknesses. Following Agenda 21, we relate these shortcomings to sustainability and also to participation. The discussion builds on social and cultural sustainability and participatory design with a focus on the involvement of users in design and implementation of IT systems and services.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Information and Communication Technologies, Society and Human Beings: Theory and Framework.. - Hershey, PA : IGI Global. - 9781609600570
