  • Requirements dependencies-based test case prioritization for extra-functional properties
  • 2019

    • The use of requirements' information in testing is a well-recognized practice in the software development life cycle. Literature reveals that existing tests prioritization and selection approaches neglected vital factors affecting tests priorities, like interdependencies between requirement specifications. We believe that models may play a positive role in specifying these inter-dependencies and prioritizing tests based on these inter-dependencies. However, till date, few studies can be found that make use of requirements inter-dependencies for test case prioritization. This paper uses a meta-model to aid modeling requirements, their related tests, and inter-dependencies between them. The instance of this meta-model is then processed by our modified PageRank algorithm to prioritize the requirements. The requirement priorities are then propagated to related test cases in the test model and test cases are selected based on coverage of extra-functional properties. We have demonstrated the applicability of our proposed approach on a small example case.

  • Test agents : The next generation of test cases
  • 2019

    • Growth of software size, lack of resources to perform regression testing, and failure to detect bugs faster have seen increased reliance on continuous integration and test automation. Even with greater hardware and software resources dedicated to test automation, software testing is faced with enormous challenges, resulting in increased dependence on centralized and complex mechanisms for automated test case selection as part of continuous integration. These mechanisms are currently using static entities called test cases that are concretely realized as executable scripts. Our key vision is to provide test cases with more reasoning, adaptive behavior and learning capabilities by using the concepts of software agents. We refer to such test cases as test agents. The model that underlie a test agent is capable of flexible and autonomous actions in order to meet overall testing objectives. Our goal is to increase the decentralization of regression testing by letting test agents to know for themselves when they should be executing, how they should update their purpose, and when they should interact with each other. In this paper, we envision test agents that display such adaptive autonomous behavior. Existing and emerging developments and challenges regarding the use of test agents are explored - in particular, new research that seeks to use adaptive autonomous agents in software testing.

  • Augmented testing : Industry feedback to shape a new testing technology
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2019 IEEE 12th International Conference on Software Testing, Verification and Validation Workshops, ICSTW 2019. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728108889 ; , s. 176-183

    • Manual testing is the most commonly used approach in the industry today for acceptance-and system-testing of software applications. Test automation has been suggested to address drawbacks with manual testing but both test automation and manual testing have several challenges that limit their return of investment for system-and acceptance-test automation. Hence, there is still an industrial need for another approach to testing that can mitigate the challenges associated with system-and acceptance-testing and make it more efficient and cost effective for the industry. In this paper we present a novel technique we refer to as Augmented Testing (AT). AT is defined as testing through a visual layer between the tester and the System Under Test (SUT) that superimposes information on top of the GUI. We created a prototype for AT and performed an industrial workshop study with 10 software developers to get their perceived benefits and drawbacks of AT. The benefits and drawbacks will be useful for further development of the technique and prototype for AT. The workshop study identified more benefits than drawbacks with AT. Two of the identified benefits were: 'Know what to test and what has been tested' and 'Less manual work'. Due to these results, we believe that AT is a promising technique that deserves more research since it may provide industry with new benefits that current techniques lack. © 2019 IEEE.

  • Prediction of Undetected Faults in Safety-Critical Software
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE International Conference on Software Testing, Verification and Validation Workshops (ICSTW). - : IEEE. - 9781728108889
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Safety-critical software systems need to meet exceptionally strict standards in terms of dependability. Best practice to achieve this is to follow and develop the software according to domain specific standards. These standards give guidelines on development and testing activities. The challenge is that even if you follow the steps of the appropriate standard you have no quantification of the amount of faults potentially still lingering in the system. This paper presents a way to statistically estimate the amount of undetected faults, based on test results.
