  • What's a good idea? : Understanding evaluation and selection of new product ideas
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: DS 58-3: Proceedings of ICED 09, the 17th International Conference on Engineering Design, vol 3, 2009. - 9781904670070 ; , s. 121-132
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates how ideas for new products are evaluated and selected in industrial companies. It is based on an empirical and explorative study in three companies, using qualitative interviews. The findings indicate that a good idea is the result of a process in which at the same time the idea is generated, evaluated and selected. This process determines which ideas are further developed, which of them reach a formal decision-making forum and, to some extent, the decisions made in these official forums. This process is characterized by a social and a cognitive aspect, overlooked in normative literature. The social aspect is about interaction between people that makes possible to combine formal and informal processes, and rational and non-rational approaches for developing and evaluating ideas with different grades of ambiguity and uncertainty. The cognitive aspect refers to how ideas and company's context are interpreted, in individual and collective levels, for making evaluations on ideas. Implications of these findings for designing supporting methods for evaluation and selection of ideas are discussed; and general descriptions of a practical method suggested.

  • Innovation and Design Inspired Product Realization
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: DS 58-3: Proceedings of ICED 09, the 17th International Conference on Engineering Design. - Stanford. - 9781904670063 - 9781904670070 ; , s. 263-274

    •  Long term growth and future jobs in society rely on that industry is able to realize new sustainable product ideas and develop these to profitable products in the market. This encompasses both short time-to-market and continuous development and adaption of existing products and processes to improve productivity. Innovative skills are required in both product/service development and in product/service introduction. Thus, there is a need for new innovative methods and models that supports and strengthens industry in generating new ideas and realizing these into successful products and improved processes. This paper discusses and compares engineering design, innovation, and design. The paper argues that there is a need to integrate the disciplines and work practices of innovation and design in the engineering design field and to build multi-disciplinary environments to be successful in research, education and in industry. A conceptual framework for innovation and design inspired product realization is presented in the paper.

  • A Structured Approach to Re-Organize for Creativity
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ICED 09. - Glasgow : The Design Society. - 9781904670070 ; , s. 343-350
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most difficult challenges when managing innovation is to identify the individuals within the organization that need to work closely with each other to maximize the generation of creative ideas. Typically, product development organizations group their individuals based on functional areas or specific projects (or a combination of both). Such a formal organizational structures not only shape the communication patterns among development actors but also impact the outcomes that individuals get from their interactions with others. This paper introduces a structured approach to guide managers on their decisions to form a temporary team (or task force) from which creative solutions would be demanded. Our approach exploits the notion of dyadic creativity, which recognizes that people trigger the generation of creative ideas when interacting with each other for task-related matters. As a result, the goal of our approach is to identify groups of individuals within the organization that have a history of triggering the generation of creative ideas when interacting with each other. Our approach is structured in three steps: 1) Capturing the current organizational structure; 2) Measuring dyadic creativity; and 3) Forming clusters of creatives. We illustrate our approach by implementing it in the development department of a European software development firm.
