  • Building a pathway for innovation : Lessons learned from developing an online platform
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of NordDesign 2014 Conference, NordDesign 2014. - Eespo, Finland : Aalto University. - 9781904670582 ; , s. 662-669
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Companies are constantly being pressured to innovate in order to stay competitive in the short run and have new offerings in the long run. One way of boosting innovation is to develop idea support systems that go beyond the traditional methods and tools. Through a qualitative study, this paper explores the lessons learned from developing an online platform for idea generation, and discusses it in terms of innovation process, climate, and capabilities. The results show that the platform itself is not enough for innovation. The structure and work processes around the platform are as important, which implies the need to design processes and procedures that allow an idea to develop, providing, focus, idea feedback and role clarity.

  • Total cost of ownership and its potential implications for electric vehicle diffusion
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of NordDesign 2014 Conference, NordDesign 2014. - : Aalto University. - 9781904670582 ; , s. 366-375
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Battery Electric Vehicles have been slow to diffuse on the international as well as the Swedish market. Existing literature have pointed to situational factors such as economical factors, size and performance to be of high importance for car purchasers in their choice of car. In this paper the authors investigates the apparent discrepancy between purchase price and the Total Cost of Ownership between Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles and Battery Electric Vehicles. The Total Cost of Ownership computation reveals that Battery Electric Vehicles can be cost competitive with Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles, a significant finding that could prove to be of importance for the diffusion of Battery Electric Vehicles, although further studies are needed to test car purchasers' knowledge regarding the Total Cost of Ownership analysis.

  • The spread of product development methodology: Exploring drivers and barriers in Swedish Industry
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 10th Biannual NordDesign Conference, NordDesign 2014, Espoo, Finland, 27-29 August. - 9781904670582 ; , s. 540-549
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The outcome of Design, Innovation and Product development research is often manifested asrecommendations in the form of methods, but these do not always find their way intoindustrial application. This paper elaborates on drivers and barriers for the spread of productdevelopment methodology based on 41 interviews with managers, designers, developers andknowledge brokers. Results indicate a range of motives for adopting methods including e.g.coordination of different actors, generation of documentation, methods serving as tools forvarious design tasks etc. However; the value of tools must be seen in relation to localconditions and practices. The spread of methods occurs between and within organisations andmay be actively supported while ideally “good tools spread themselves”. Participants call formethods to be scalable or malleable, guiding, informing and enabling without constraining orenforcing too rigid procedures.

  • Visualization of Problems in Experience Sharing
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of NordDesign 2014. - : NordDesign Conference. - 9781904670582
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus on knowledge management have since long been recognized in literature and undoubtedly benefited organizations. More recently companies claim themselves to be ‘knowledge-driven’. Indeed, the concept of knowledge-driven incorporates experiences. Typically, factual knowledge has a transparent management approach, while experience sharing is highly prioritized but not straightforward. This study addresses experience sharing and proposes a perspective to support reflection upon practice in innovation projects. The study builds on a longitudinal acquisition of empirical data obtained in a manufacturing company acting on a global market. In particular, early innovation projects have been a source for data collection. Interviews with knowledge workers, observations from daily work activities and reading internal documents provide the empirical material for the study. The study has resulted in a visualization of different kinds of issues concerning experience sharing. The visualization has been a base for highlighting industrial implications and proposing actions.

  • Human Factors Engineering as a supportive tool for Lean Product Development
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 10th Biannual NordDesign Conference, NordDesign 2014, Espoo, Finland, 27-29 August. - 9781904670582 ; , s. 346-355
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lean Product Development (LPD) is a systematic approach used by enterprises to create streamlined processes and value-added activities. One of the main building blocks in LPD is to define and identify customer value and then deliver that value to the customer. Despite that, we have perceived a number of weaknesses in how LPD works with customer needs and requirements. Especially with respect to how best actively and continuously involve the customers/users in the development process. The area of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) concerns ways of designing with regards to human characteristics, capacities and limitations. In the work it is central to elicit user needs and mediate them into the product development processes, as well as letting the user actively be involved in the process. Therefore, in this paper we argue that HFE can make substantial contribution to the area of LPD.
