- In this introductory chapter, various terms and concepts referring to conservative religious groups are discussed, including fundamentalism and strong religion. Arguments for the use of the term conservative religion are presented. Usually, groups of conservative religion are characterized by conservative theology and morality, while their views of social and political matters can vary. Processes of modernisation and secularisation are also discussed in this chapter and related to conservative religion in the past and present. Finally, the introductory chapter contains a presentation of the subsequent chapters. The presentation concludes in a discussion of the strategies used by the groups under study in the empirical chapters: opposition, negotiation and adaptation.

- This chapter examines the possible existence of a Bible belt, an area of stronger, often conservative, religious expressions in norther Sweden. Media sources and previous studies are employed to explore the relevance of the Bible belt concept. During the twentieth century, studies have been conducted to detect and describe the characteristics of different regions in Sweden. Several studies point toward one Bible belt in the south and one in the north. However, the characteristics of a northern Bible belt are blunt and unnuanced, largely because religiosity does not follow administrative boarders in the vast and rather unevenly populated area. Therefore, the diversity of religious faith and practices in the north of Sweden are obscured.

- Responding to modern research in natural sciences and Biblical studies, two laymen of the Evangelical movement launched apologetic periodicals in Sweden in the first decade of the 20th century to defend the infallibility of the Bible. In Facklan, Waldemar Lönnbeck published translated articles written by British and American conservative scientists, while Axel B. Svensson’s Nya Väktaren had a more national and popular profile, which included edifying articles. The editors of the two monthly journals acted as brothers-in-arms but competed in the same market of Evangelical Christians. They developed a strongly polemical style in their criticism of contemporary phenomena. While Lönnbeck identified the materialism of modern science as a major threat to traditional Christian faith, Svensson related to the Bible-view debate within the Swedish Evangelical Mission.
