  • ‘We do no harm, we say what we want, and we get paid for it’ : Academic Work and Dignity in Stoner by John Williams
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Engaging with Work in English Studies. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030697204 - 9783030697198 ; , s. 69-95
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Examining the meaning of work in relation to identity, this chapter looks at literary renditions of jobs in academia, especially in the campus novel. Departing from John Williams’ Stoner (1965), the analysis situates the academic novel in a historical and cultural context where the idea that scholarly labour increases self-worth and dignity is under increasing pressure. Further, the theme of work-life dignity is expanded to a wider discussion of the borders and frontiers of the university, particularly of the humanities, in terms of value, usefulness, and productivity. To fully draw out the implications of the analysis, Stoner is read in relation to a range of academic novels that each conspicuously negotiates work, identity, and dignity, including Willa Cather’s The Professor’s House and J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace.

  • The Supoerhero and the Tiger Mom : Examining the Relation between parental expectations and career choices: : Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew's The Shadow Hero
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Engaging with Work in English Studies. - Cham : Springer Publishing Company. - 9783030697204 - 9783030697198 ; , s. 127-150
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Through the example of Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew’s The Shadow Hero (2014), this chapter interrogates the cultural clashes emerging from the discrepancy between individualist and collectivist views of work in relation to family and society. While classic superhero narratives can be understood as manifestations of individualism, this narrative presents a young hero who is pushed into the role by an overzealous mother, reminiscent of the Tiger Mother-figure of Amy Chua’s controversial autobiography (Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Penguin, 2011). Applying theories from social psychology to the analysis, it is shown that the idea of the independent self, in which work is a mark of adult autonomy, is posited against an idea of the self as interdependent and associated with collectivist ideals that link work with family and prioritize filial piety.

  • Changing English, Changing Challenges : The Work of Teaching English in a Context of Diverse Experiences
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Engaging with Work in English Studies. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030697198 - 9783030697204 ; , s. 151-171
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Today, teachers of English are facing new challenges. As a language and as a school subject, English is in a process of transformation. Learners’ encounters with English are constantly changing, resulting in classrooms where experiences are diverse and proficiency levels vary widely. In such contexts, teachers’ professional development becomes increasingly important. This chapter draws attention to the need to include and promote language awareness as a central element in the education of preservice teachers learning the work of teaching English. With language awareness firmly cemented as a part of an English teacher’s professional practice, and with working approaches that emphasize both function and form, students can better become equipped as speakers and users of English in a globalized world.

  • Authenticity at Work : English Teachers’ Experiences of Authentic and Inauthentic Acting
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Engaging with Work in English Studies. - Cham : Springer Publishing Company. - 9783030697204 - 9783030697198 ; , s. 56-68
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For teachers, self-reflection involves the questions ‘who am I as a teacher?’ and ‘how am I as a teacher?’ While the ‘who’ question involves teacher identity, the ‘how’ question involves self-authenticity. This chapter reports on a study examining the self-authenticity experiences of teachers of English at a secondary school in Sweden. With a focus on narrative evaluations of practice events, three types of authenticity experience are identified: perceptions of authenticity/inauthenticity in relationships, perceptions of authenticity/inauthenticity in the creation of meaningful learning opportunities, and perceptions of frustrated authenticity when managing challenging situations.

  • Introduction : Engaging with Worki n Worlds of Change
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Engaging with Work in English Studies. - Cham : Springer Publishing Company. - 9783030697198 - 9783030697204 ; , s. 1-17
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In a globalized world, English Studies is in need of transformation. Serving as an introduction to the anthology, this chapter makes the case for an issue-based approach to English Studies where engagement is sought with fields beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. From the position that English Studies can be understood as a form of participatory action — where English Studies is brought into the world and the world is brought into English Studies — the chapter examines practices of work in contemporary society, and previews the volume’s contributions.

  • Working with Identity Work : Supporting Professional Identity Development in Teacher Education
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Engaging with Work in English Studies. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030697198 - 9783030697204 ; , s. 97-123
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The development of a coherent sense of self as a teacher often emerges from tensions between multiple and competing identities. While grappling with these tensions can be stressful, and sometimes demoralizing, it is through disruption that spaces for development are provided. For preservice teachers, identity development can be supported through engagement with these processes. With a focus on conceptualizations of the self that foreground its narrative structure and conflicted nature — and taking the work of learning to teach English as an example — this chapter presents a series of tools that can be used for ‘working with identity work’ at different stages of a preservice teacher’s education.

  • Global English in the Workplace: : Introducing the Concepts of  ‘Workplace English as a Lingua Franca’ (WELF), and ‘Successful WELF Users’
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Engaging with Work in English Studies. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030697204 - 9783030697198 ; , s. 197-220
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Workplaces are becoming increasingly international. In many contemporary workplaces, English is used as a lingua franca (ELF). This chapter introduces the notion of WELF, Workplace English as a Lingua Franca, which is used as a means of conceptualizing English that is used in international workplace settings. The chapter focuses on the language skills and strategies that are deployed by successful WELF users. An important aim in conceptualizing WELF is to help English learners to find their own answers to the questions of why they need to learn English, and what it means to be a competent user of the language. A further aim is to reach out to English teachers working in contexts where students can be expected to work in globalized workplaces.

  • 'Imagine being so suddenly useless' : Unemployment, Vulnerability and the Irish Financial Crash in Donal Ryan's The Spinning Heart
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Engaging with Work in English Studies. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030697198 - 9783030697204 ; , s. 21-44
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The economic boom in Ireland, referred to as the Celtic Tiger, resulted in a financial merry-go-round, where there were few restrictions controlling the financial institutions. This in turn created a financial bubble that ultimately burst, resulting in the financial crash in 2008. At both the individual and collective levels, the crash was devastating, causing severe unemployment and economic hardship, even poverty among many segments of the population, re-shaping the landscape of work in Ireland. This chapter explores the pain and vulnerability following the crash as represented in Donal Ryan’s novel The Spinning Heart (2012). The novel offers a hard-hitting critique of irresponsible constructors and employers, a reality ultimately made possible by a corrupt and dysfunctional political culture.
