  • Understanding Recognition of Prior Learning as a Tool for the Labour Market Integration of Skilled Migrants
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Migration, Education and Employment. - Cham : Springer. - 9783031419171 - 9783031419195 ; , s. 29-44
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the integration of skilled migrants, recognition of their prior learning is a key factor. One concern is the object of the recognition process, the formal and the actual competence of the individual. Another concern is the subject of the process, the migrant. Starting from the individual and her/his experience and competence entails a different process and result than starting from professional regulations and labour-market needs. A final concern is the process of recognition. Recognition processes could be seen solely as a matter of classification and assessment, but this misses the fact that the recognition process also means a learning process for the individual. This chapter discusses problems and opportunities relating to the recognition of prior learning targeting skilled migrants in relationship to these three concerns of object, subject, and process of recognition.

  • Important Encounters for Education and Employment
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Migration, Education and Employment. - Cham : Springer Nature. - 9783031419171 - 9783031419195 ; , s. 67-84
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Support from other people has been identified as one of the key factors facilitating migrants’ access to their previous vocational area in their new country (Eliasson et al., J Educ Work 35(8): 828–842). In this text, migrants’ descriptions of encounters that have influenced their paths to education or employment are studied in depth. The encounters are analysed through theories of social identity construction (Jenkins, Social identity, 2004) and from a class, gender, and ethnicity perspective. The material consists of 20 interviews with migrants who have a professional education from their home country and have gained access to their previous vocational area in Sweden. The result shows that encounters can lead to direct access to education and workplaces, but also function as support and encouragement that strengthen the migrant’s fighting spirit. In other words, successful encounters may lead to successful inclusion into working life. Aspects of ethnicity and profession (class) are visible in the analysis of the encounters, while gender is less visible since the respondents are working in traditionally masculine- or feminine-coded sectors. Resistance to other people’s negative constructions of the respondents’ identities is visible in many narratives, which also seems important to their persistence in job searching.

  • Integration and the Art of Making a Society : The Case of Swedish Society
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Migration, Education and Employment. - : Springer. - 9783031419195 - 9783031419171 ; , s. 113-132
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last refugee wave in the mid-2010s, Sweden received a high proportion of refugees compared to other countries. In connection with this, the debate about the country’s ability to manage the integration of immigrants intensified. The dominant discourse, which also had political repercussions, was that integration has failed. This chapter reflects on immigrants and ‘Swedishness’ in relation to integration, ethnicity and equality. Swedish Popular Adult education, ‘folkbildning’, will be used as an example of a democratic educational environment for collective learning, and as an instrument for successful democratization of the society promoting social cohesion and reducing inequality. The chapter examines the role of education for integration and inclusion, and the questions of who is a Swede, how one becomes a Swede.

  • Potential, Actuality or Vulnerability? The Importance of Recognition in Career Counselling for Newly Arrived Migrants
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Migration, Education and Employment. - : Springer. - 9783031419171 - 9783031419195 ; , s. 45-66
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article studies the importance of recognition in career guidance counselling for newly arrived migrants. The term “recognition” is used as a sensitising concept, in line with Herbert Blumer’s sociology. The article draws attention to many different meanings of the concept of recognition, such as the recognition of previously established knowledge, skills and experiences; study and career aspirations; norms and values; opportunities for development; and the recognition of particularly difficult and therefore noteworthy life circumstances. The study is based on the analysis of qualitative data, drawn from semi-structured interviews with 14 study and career counsellors, who in their work meet (or have met) newly arrived migrants. The analysis draws attention to the fact that opportunities for development, as well as the recognition of particularly difficult and thus noteworthy life circumstances, are usually acknowledged without more extensive objections, but that the recognition of previously established knowledge, skills and experiences, study and career aspirations as well as norms and values can, according to the interviewees, lead to goal conflicts in study and career counselling work (although the relevance of a recognizing approach is generally emphasised).

  • Integration as a Conceptual Resource When Studying Skilled Migrants in the Workplace
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Migration, Education and Employment. - Cham : Springer. - 9783031419171 - 9783031419195 ; , s. 99-112
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on the concept of integration, which is used in everyday political and academic discussions and has its opponents and defenders. The aim is to explore how it is defined, described and used in studies focusing on skilled immigrants’ integration into the workplace. The chapter is inspired by conceptual analysis and uses conceptual approaches such as everyday, scientific, formal and functional concepts to reflect on the results of the analysis. The results show that integration is not clearly defined in the studies, but assumed that readers know what is meant by it. The process nature of integration is highlighted in the studies, and its many uses such as integration to work community, vocational practices and society. It is concluded that researchers need to be more conscious of their use of the concept of integration and be transparent what do they mean by it.

  • Education for access to the Swedish labour market and society : A historical comparison of practices for the integration of immigrants in the 1960s and early 2000s
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Migration, Education and Employment. - : Springer. - 9783031419171
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The policies and strategies for the integration of immigrants into the Swedish labour market and society evolved considerably between the mid-1900s and early 2000s. While it could be reasonably claimed that there was a similar line of development in many other countries, the Swedish case has particularities that could well be associated with aspects of the welfare state and a traditional concern with social integration. From a historical perspective, this chapter analyses some of the core features of this development and examines questions such as how perceptions about work, education and integration have evolved. In relation to the first decades of the 21th century, the cases presented depict a new reality and a diversity of approaches that, it is argued, enrich the process of integration of immigrants into the labour market and society. This chapter will shed more light on the relationship between migration and societal change. In this investigation, the relationship between work, vocation and education is of particular interest. The chapter will also demonstrate how the changing character of this relationship can be understood as part of the idea structures of integration. Even though the analysis relates primarily to a Swedish context, it may be relevant to other national settings.
