  • On the impact of sybil attacks in cooperative driving scenarios
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IFIP Networking Conference (IFIP Networking) and Workshops. - : IEEE. - 9783901882944 - 9781538628294
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Platooning employs a set of technologies to manage how a group of vehicles operates, including radar, GPS and Inter-Vehicular Communication (IVC). It uses broadcasted information such as acceleration, position and velocity to operate vehicle members of the platoon. Cooperation among vehicles allows platoons to reduce fuel consumption and risks associated with driver mistakes. In spite of these benefits, the use of IVC to control vehicles exposes a relevant attack surface that can be exploited by malicious actors. In this paper we study the impact of vulnerabilities associated with the Sybil attack (through falsification of multiple identities) and message falsification in vehicular platooning. Simulation results show that this attack may impact the longitudinal control and compromise the entire platoon control. © Copyright 2018 IEEE

  • A lightweight measurement platform for home internet monitoring
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IFIP Networking Conference, IFIP Networking 2017 and Workshops. - 9783901882944
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CheesePi is a lightweight measurement platform with the goal of performing active measurements directly from within users' homes. As an always on device, it provides better context on the network state, than those available from browser interaction (Speedtest, etc.) In this demonstration, we will show the frontend of CheesePi and how we incorporate data from several sources around Sweden into a dashboard. A testbed of CheesePi nodes has been deployed, where we have conducted several tests. The presentation will highlight how to make unbiased and neutral measurements of the telecommunications infrastructure (Table III). Measurements are of sufficient quality to be useful by an operator, plus requirements mandated by academia [3], regulatory bodies [1] and the IETF [4]. © 2017 IFIP.

  • Measuring PHY layer interactions between LoRa and IEEE 802.15.4g networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IFIP Networking Conference (IFIP NETWORKING) and Workshops. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9783901882944
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advances in low power wireless communication have resulted in new radio technologies that can achieve long distance communication in energy efficient ways. An emerging problem in this scenario is interference between networks that share the same medium. The fact that these networks have a long transmission range increases the possibility of interference even more. Thus the investigation of how different networks can share the medium independently in a optimal way becomes an essential requirement for the IoT vision. In this poster, we present the first step of this investigation, which is measuring how LoRa and IEEE 802.15.4g PHY layers interfere.

  • Predicting SLA conformance for cluster-based services
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IFIP Networking Conference, IFIP Networking 2017 and Workshops. - : IEEE. - 9783901882944 ; , s. 1-2
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to predict conformance or violation for given Service-level Agreements (SLAs) is critical for service assurance. We demonstrate a prototype for real-time conformance prediction based on the concept of the capacity region, which abstracts the underlying ICT infrastructure with respect to the load it can carry for a given SLA. The capacity region is estimated through measurements and statistical learning. We demonstrate prediction for a key-value store (Voldemort) that runs on a server cluster located at KTH.

  • Understanding Multistreaming for Web Traffic : An Experimental Study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 16th International IFIP TC6 Networking Conference, Networking 2017. - : IEEE. - 9783901882944
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the design trade-offs needed for an Internet transport protocol to effectively support web access over HTTP/1.1. It explores use of a multistreaming transport protocol mechanism and studies these using a practical methodology utilising the transport features of TCP and SCTP. This is used to evaluate the relative benefit of key transport mechanisms and analyse how these impact web access performance. Our conclusions help identify the root causes of performance impairments and suggest appropriate choices when selecting a suitable transport protocol.

  • A NEAT framework for application-awareness in SDN environments
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IFIP Networking Conference (IFIP Networking) and Workshops. - : IEEE. - 9783901882944
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has led to a paradigm shift in the way how networks are managed and operated. In SDN environments the data plane forwarding rules are managed by logically centralized controllers operating on global view of the network. Today, SDN controllers typically posses little insight about the requirements of the applications executed on the end-hosts. Consequently, they rely on heuristics to implement traffic engineering or QoS support. In this work, we propose a framework for application-awareness in SDN environments where the end-hosts provide a generic interface for the SDN controllers to interact with. As a result, SDN controllers may enhance the end-host’s view of the attached network and deploy policies into the edge of the network. Further, controllers may obtain information about the specific requirements of the deployed applications. Our demonstration extends the OpenDaylight SDN controller to enable it to interact with end-hosts running a novel networking stack called NEAT. We demonstrate a scenario in which the controller distributes policies and path information to manage bulk and low-latency flows.

  • Probe or Wait : Handling tail losses using Multipath TCP
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IFIP Networking Conference (IFIP Networking) and Workshops. - : IEEE. - 9783901882944
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Packet losses are known to affect the performance of latency sensitive Internet applications such as media streaming and gaming. Transport protocols recover from packet loss in order to provide reliable end-to-end communication and improve user experience. The efficiency of loss recovery mechanisms influences the completion time of flows, and thus also the application performance as perceived by the end user. In this paper we focus on state-of-the-art loss recovery mechanisms for TCP and Multipath TCP. We use controlled tail loss scenarios to evaluate the performance of loss recovery mechanisms and, based on the observations, we propose an enhanced tail loss recovery mechanism for Multipath TCP, to improve the loss recovery time. Our experiment results, using the Linux Multipath TCP implementation, show consistent end-to-end latency performance improvement in considered scenarios.

  • Distributing Dynamic Divisible Loads
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IFIP Networking Conference (IFIP Networking) and Workshops. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9783901882944
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the emergence of computing infrastructures in the cloud or at the network edge we need to address the question of how to utilize these shared resources when computational tasks are generated dynamically. While small computing tasks may be satisfied with the computing capacity of a single resource, large tasks may want to utilize multiple computing nodes and perform parallel processing to shorten the task completion time. In this paper we evaluate how additional overhead in such divisible load systems affect the efficiency of parallel processing - from the point of view of the task itself, and for the entire resource sharing system. We show that the preference of a single task may be in conflict with the allocation needed for a social optimum, which in turn depends heavily on the load as well as on the system size.

  • Resilient Placement of Virtual Process Control Functions in Mobile Edge Clouds
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IFIP Networking Conference (IFIP NETWORKING) and Workshops. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9783901882944
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Virtual Process Control Functions (VPFs) are a promising solution for replacing hardware controllers in industrial control processes in order to improve operational efficiency. With the introduction of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) in 5G networks, VPFs could even be executed on cloud resources close to the mobile network edge to further improve operational efficiency. Nonetheless, for this to happen, it is fundamental to ensure that the placement of VPFs be resilient to potential cyber-attacks and component failures, besides being efficient. In this paper we address this problem by considering that VPF placement costs are incurred by reserving MEC resources, executing VPF instances, and by data transmission. We formulate the VPF placement problem as an integer programming (IP) problem, with resilience as a constraint. We propose a VPF placement algorithm based on generalized Benders decomposition and based on linear relaxation of the resulting sub-problems, which effectively reduces the number of integer variables to that of the number of MEC nodes. We evaluate the proposed solution with respect to operational cost, efficiency, and scalability, and compare it with a greedy baseline algorithm. Extensive simulations show that our algorithm performs well in realistic scenarios.
