  • Status of the Front Ends project at MAXIV
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2016 - Proceedings of the 7th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501472 ; , s. 2947-2949
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MAX IV laboratory is a Swedish national laboratory for synchrotron radiation hosted by the Lund University. It will operate two storage rings to produce synchrotron light of very high intensity and quality over a broad wavelength range. A linear accelerator will feed these storage rings in topping up mode as well as serve as an electron source for a short pulse facility built on its extension. The storage rings have different sizes and operate at different energies: the MAX IV 1.5 GeV ring has 12 straight sections optimized for soft x-rays; while the MAX IV 3.0 GeV ring, has 20 straight sections, optimized for harder x-rays. In the initial stage of the project, five beamlines are foreseen to operate on the 3.0 GeV storage ring and an additional five on the 1.5 GeV ring. Each beamline requires a front end to interface the different characteristics in terms of vacuum level, heat loads, radiation safety, beam size and position, with respect to the storage ring. This paper describes the status of the different Front Ends project at MAXIV.

  • Emittance diagnostics at the MAX IV 3 GeV storage ring
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2016 - Proceedings of the 7th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501472 ; , s. 2908-2910
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the MAX IV project in Lund, Sweden, an ultralow emittance storage ring light source is going into user operation in 2016. Due to its multibend achromat lattice designthe 3 GeV storage ring reaches a horizontal emittance lower than 330 pm rad. Emittance diagnostics will involve two diagnostic beamlines to image the electron beam with infrared and ultraviolet synchrotron radiation from bending dipoles. Placed in locations of different optic functions the beamlines will provide experimental access to both horizontal and vertical emittance and to beam energy spread. Since bunch lengthening with harmonic cavities is essential for machine performance, time resolved measurements with synchrotron radiation for individual longitudinal bunch distributions are of special interest as well.

  • Transverse coherent instabilities in storage rings with harmonic cavities
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2016 - Proceedings of the 7th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501472 ; , s. 1061-1064
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many current and future synchrotron light sources employ harmonic cavities to lengthen the electron bunches in order to reduce the emittance dilution caused by intrabeam scattering. In some cases, the harmonic cavities may be tuned to fulfill the flat potential condition. For this condition, a large increase in the threshold currents of transverse coupled-bunch instabilities has been predicted and recently, the physical content behind this stabilisation has been better understood. With this in mind, an investigation is made into the effectiveness of harmonic cavities for different machines. Frequency domain computations employing Laclare's eigenvalue method have been used to investigate the influence of several machine parameters and the results are presented.

  • Status of insertion device measurement systems at MAX IV Laboratory
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2016 - Proceedings of the 7th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501472 ; , s. 4047-4049
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An insertion device lab was setup at MAX IV Laboratory and the production of insertion devices, mainly outof-vacuum is ongoing and aided by new magnetic measurement systems. A new 5.5 m long Hall probe bench is used for field map measurements and a new hybrid flip coil and stretch wire system will be used for field integrals of full devices as well as individual magnet blocks characterisation. This paper describes these magnetic measurement systems and their achieved and expected performance.

  • Fast tracking of nonlinear dynamics in the ESS linac simulator via particle-count invariance
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2016 - Proceedings of the 7th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501472 ; , s. 3080-3082
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Real-time beam modeling has been used in accelerator diagnostics for several decades. Along the way, the theory for matrix calculations of linear forces has matured, allowing for fast calculations of a beam's momentum and position distributions. This formalism becomes complicated and ultimately breaks down with high-order beam elements like sextupoles. Such elements can be accurately modeled with a Lie-algebra approach, but these techniques are generally implemented in slower, offline multiparticle tracking software. Here, we demonstrate an adaptation of the conventional Lie techniques for rapid first-order tracking of position, which is accomplished by treating a bunch's particle count as an invariant.

  • MAX IV 3 GeV storage ring magnet block production series measurement results
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2016 - Proceedings of the 7th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501472 ; , s. 1157-1159
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MAX IV 3 GeV storage ring magnets are integrated "magnet block" units consisting of several consecutive magnet elements precision-machined out of a common solid iron block. In the 3 GeV ring, there are 140 magnet blocks containing a total of 1320 magnet elements. During the manufacturing phase of the project, a field measurement was performed for each magnet element, by Hall probe and/or by rotating coil. This article presents an overview of the magnetic field measurement results that were obtained for the full production series.

  • SLAC FACET-II positron damping ring magnet design
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2016 - Proceedings of the 7th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501472 ; , s. 1154-1156
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The FACET-II facility, currently being designed at SLAC, will contain a small 20 m circumference, 335 MeV, positron damping ring. The ring has to fit in the existing linac tunnel, meaning that a compact lattice with short distances between magnets is required. The detailed magnet design is done in Opera-3d, with a finite element model of a full damping ring arc being simulated. This article presents this magnet design in a relatively early stage, with iteration between magnet and lattice design currently in progress.

  • Commissioning of the MAX IV Light Source
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2016 - Proceedings of the 7th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501472 ; , s. 11-15
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The first of the so-called diffraction-limited storage rings (DLSRs), MAX I V, has now gone into operation. For this ring, a multibend achromat (MBA) lattice is employed in order to achieve a small electron beam emittance. Several non-conventional technical system solutions have been introduced in order to reduce size, cost, assembly time, installation effort and to increase the ring robustness. Examples of this are solid magnet blocks housing several magnet items, a fully NEG-coated vacuum system and a low frequency RF system. The commissioning started in late August 2015. Several base-line parameters have now been reached like a sufficiently high stored circulating current, beam lifetime and beam quality for beamline commissioning. The MBA concept and the operation of the non-conventional solutions technical systems are verified. This article describes some of the technical solutions chosen and the early commissioning results.

  • RF test of ESS superconducting spoke cavities at Uppsala University
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of  IPAC2016. - 9783954501472 ; , s. 791-794
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The European Spallation Source (ESS) is an accelerator-driven neutron spallation source built in Sweden. It will deliver the first protons to a rotating tungsten target by 2019 and will reach the full 5 MW average beam power in the following years. The superconducting Spoke cavities are considered compact structures at low frequencies and having an excellent RF performance in both low and medium velocity regimes, therefore ESS will include a total of 26 double-spoke cavities. The testing of the double-spoke prototype cavity at high power has been conceded to Uppsala University, Sweden, where the Facility for Research Instrumentation and Accelerator development (FREIA) has been equipped with superconducting cavity test facility.    A bare spoke cavity has been tested at the FREIA Laboratory with a self-exited loop at low power level to confirm its vertical test performance at IPNO. Similar test results as IPNO's previous test were obtained with FREIA system. In this paper we present the methods and preliminary study results of the cavity performance.
