  • Themes and Challenges in Making Supply Chains Socially Sustainable
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. - 9788799743308 ; , s. 182-200
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Purpose of this paper is to explore and classify pattern of the currently discussed themes and challenges in making supply chains socially sustainable. Design/methodology/approach The methodology was based on a systematic review of the existing literature in order to explore what major themes and challenges have been discussed as well as the significant gaps where opportunities for further research can be found. Findings In total five categories of themes were identified, namely goods/service-centric, humancentric, organization-centric, corporate-centric, and management/governance-centric. Challenges were classified into eight categories namely, inadequate and asymmetric knowledge, shifting the values, operationalization, subjectivity in evaluation, difficulties of SMEs, governance complexity, sustainability leakage, and sustainability washing. Research limitations/implications Focus of the paper is on social pillar of sustainable development in context of supply chains. A more holistic investigation of all the three pillars/ bottom lines of sustainable development (economic, environmental, and social) can be an opportunity for further research. Practical implications Taking a more holistic view of the pattern of currently discussed themes and challenges may be beneficial in increasing the absorptive capacity of industrial and business practitioners when they design and operationalize innovative strategies in developing sustainable supply chains. Originality/value This paper may increase awareness about the social responsibilities of supply chains actors and stakeholders. It may also guide managers, decision makers, and practitioners to better understand the difficulties, obstacles, or dilemmas that can hinder sustainable development of supply chains. The discussion section provides suggestions for tackling the challenges and a section that elaborates on opportunities for further research.

  • Who controls logistics emissions? Challenges in making fragmented supply chains environmentally sustainable from a logistics service provider's perspective
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 26th Conference of the Nordic Logistics Research Network: NOFOMA 2014. - 9788799743308 ; , s. 201-218
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The purpose of this article is to explore the environmental impact of Logistics Service Provider (LSP) activities in the light of increased customer attention and fragmentation of the industry. We try to answer the question, to what extent the LSPs can actually monitor the environmental impact of logistics activities in the supply chain? Design/methodology/approach The methodology of this paper is a literature review, a qualitative interview survey, and three case studies. A framework on sustainability challenges in supply chains derived from the literature is used to structure and analyze the findings. Findings Our findings reveal that despite ambitious environmental schemes communicated by several LSPs, LSPs exert very little control over the actual emissions created from their transport operations. Furthermore, it is clear from this study that any real interest in environmental solutions that impact the cost and time requirements from customers of logistics services are not yet a reality. Research limitations/implications This paper implies that LSP sustainability cannot be investigated in isolation if a company does not manage proprietary resources. Practical implications Our findings imply that environmental policies between different LSPs appear similar, but in practice differs, which stresses the importance of follow-up control by environmentally aware logistics service buyers. Originality/value This paper represents a novel approach as to how LSP environmental policies should be viewed.

  • Supply chain competence: A literature study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 26th Conference of the Nordic Logistics Research Network NOFOMA 2014 Proceedings : Competitiveness through Supply Chain Management and Global Logistics - Competitiveness through Supply Chain Management and Global Logistics. - 9788799743308 ; , s. 219-234
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Competence is a prerequisite to achieve a well-functioning and competitive supply chain (SC). The purpose of this review is to present an integrated view of the published literature on all the aspects and facets of supply chain competence, and to present a framework for classification and analysis to facilitate further study, practice and research. Design/methodology/approach A structured and systematic literature review was carried out, analysing a large number of refereed journal articles as well as books, conference proceedings and reports. An analysis in the form of content analysis and cross-tabulations of data is reported in this paper. Findings Supply chain competence is a relatively unexplored area, where the existing literature is fragmented and diversified. The key findings are: the field has emerged during the last decade; the publication sources are heavily spread among subject areas; research addresses many stakeholders, and the results strengthen the view of SC competence as a complex and encompassing area with a lack of consensus in the research community. Originality/value The research on supply chain competence is scarce, even though there is a body of literature emphasising it as a key success factor for supply chain excellence. This study provides a framework for the identification of the key content of the subject and assist in resolving the present confusion and complexity of the concept of SC competence.

  • Greening Logistics Through and Beyond Transport Efficiency
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Competitiveness though Supply Chain Management and Global Logistics. - 9788799743308 ; , s. 612-629
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACTPurposeIn order for logistics to become greener, logistics service providers (LSPs) need to be included in the greening of supply chains. A key to become proactive members of a supply chain is that their business supports the greening of their activities – otherwise greening will not reach beyond single initiatives and demonstration projects. The purpose of this paper is to explore how LSPs’ underlying business logics can help in understanding LSPs green activities and aspects.Design/methodology/approachA multiple case study was carried out of three LSPs in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The analysis relies on the growing literature on LSPs and their environmental efforts, and the business logic is based on a strategic approach to business literature.FindingsThe findings indicate that the efficiency-based business logic commonly applied by LSPs in some respect supports the greening of logistics. Differences among the cases suggest that customer interaction is crucial for realising a greening of LSPs business models.Research limitations/implicationsThe results rely on case studies of large LSPs in the Nordic countries. To a certain extent the results of this research can be generalised also to smaller LSPs, however with restrictions. The results are discussed in relation to the geographical markets for the researched cases.612NOFOMA 2014 Proceedings Copenhagen Business SchoolPractical implicationsThe customer interaction and the customer selection has a great impact on the development of green logistics services, as these aspects both influence the efficiency in the activities and the dynamics in the development of new services.Originality/valueThe business logic approach to greening LSPs’ activities is suggested as important but seldom applied in empirically based research. This paper demonstrates how such an approach can support the identification of viable green efforts among LSPs. Furthermore, the paper contributes to the understanding of environmental issues in relation to the business of LSPs.

  • Drivers and Barriers for Collaborative Environmental Sustainability : Transport Buyers' Perceptions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Competitiveness through Supply Chain Management and Global Logistics. - Copenhagen : Copenhagen Business School Press. - 9788799743308 ; , s. 458-474
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACTPurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate transport byers perception of drivers and barriers for collaborative environmental sustainability and how this interrelate with the companies’ degree of knowledge about logistics service providers and their degree of collaboration with these logistics service providers.Design/methodology/approachThis research is based on an electronic questionnaire-survey distributed to Danish transport buyers. The questionnaire was distributed to 344 transport purchasers of which 82 have made complete and useful answers leading to an overall response rate of 24 per cent.FindingsThe main drivers for environmental sustainability are identified as: 1) demand from top management to focus on environmental sustainability, 2) avoiding loosing reputation, and 3) a feeling of ethical obligation. The main barriers are identified as: 1) difficulties to visualize the benefits of sustainability, 2) lack of data and information about sustainability, and 3) customers are not willing to pay for sustainability. In addition, the paper provides evidence for that the drivers for environmental sustainability positively affect knowledge of logistics service providers and collaboration with environmental issues.458NOFOMA 2014 Proceedings Copenhagen Business SchoolResearch limitations/implicationsThis research is based on a survey of Danish companies purchasing logistic services and thus solely represents a Danish transport buyer perspective. Thus, future research can explore how the view is different in specific logistics buyer and service provider relationships and other national contexts.Practical implicationsMore research is needed on a differentiated perspective on environmental sustainability in the relation to the purchase of materials versus service offerings.Originality/valueThis paper provides evidence of a paradoxical nature of drivers and barriers for environmental sustainability grounded in the extant body of literature compared with the empirical findings in this study.

  • Managing supply uncertainties in supply chain planning—experiences from the food industry
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings Nofoma. - 9788799743308
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Supply uncertainty is one of the main challenges within the food industry and has a great effect on the food producers delivery performance. Methods such as forecasting, scenario analysis and information sharing are well developed in relation to demand uncertainty. Still the alternative actions to deal with supply uncertainty are little studied. Thus, the purpose here is to explore how supply uncertainty in the food industry is caused and how to manage it through supply chain planning. Methodology: This paper is based on two case studies: one industrial producer of fish products and one industrial producer of beverages. Both companies experience challenges with supply uncertainty in different ways.Findings: It was found that supply uncertainty (quality, quantity, time, and price) was caused by circumstances at the supplier, in the purchasing of raw materials and characteristics of the raw material. Based on the effect of those sources solutions on how to reduce supply uncertainty within supply chain planning were summarized.   Research limitations: The developed framework was based on two case studies of industrial food producers and needs to be further verified.Originality: This study is one of the first that, at a detailed level, explores the connection between supply uncertainty and supply chain planning within the food industry. As such it contributes to the subject areas of food supply chain management and operations planning and control, and provides guidelines for companies in the food industry on how to deal with supply uncertainty

  • Consideration of supply chain environmental impacts during packaging development: theory versus practice
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 26th Nofoma Conference. - 9788799743308 ; , s. 164-181
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose is to provide insight into how companies in practice work during packaging development to reduce negative environmental impacts along supply chains and to compare their practical approaches with the theoretical concepts presented in the literature. Design/methodology/approach: The research approach is explorative and based on nine cases (26 semi-structured interviews) in the food and manufacturing industries in Sweden. Data were collected from three managerial perspectives: the packaging manager’s, the logistics manager’s, and the environmental manager’s. Findings: The findings indicate that companies have knowledge about the relationship between packaging design and environmental impacts in supply chains. They also commonly apply a variety of green packaging approaches. Companies seem, however, to lack guidance on how to handle potential trade-offs and are unable to fully utilize the economic and environmental benefits of green packaging approaches due to internal and external barriers. Research limitations/implications: The study analyses packaging development practices at a limited number of companies in the Swedish manufacturing and food industry. Based on the findings, propositions are provided. Future research could test these propositions. Practical implications: The study suggests a number of concrete opportunities on how companies can overcome some of the experienced barriers. The analytical framework provides practitioners with a structured overview of packaging approaches that can reduce environmental impacts along the supply chain. Social implications: The results indicate that companies seem to focus on green packaging approaches that entail clear economic benefits, which is sub-optimal from a societal perspective. Original/value: This research provides empirical data on how theoretical concepts about green packaging development are applied in industry.
