  • Dynamic characterisation of different magneto-sensitive natural rubbers for application in vibration isolation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of ISMA 2010 - International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering, including USD 2010. - : Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. - 9789073802872 ; , s. 227-231
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dynamic properties of magneto-sensitive natural rubber components were experimentally studied. Different magneto-sensitive rubbers were manufactured, consisting of irregularly shaped micron-sized iron particles embedded in a natural rubber matrix, and the influence of the hardness of the matrix material and the particle volume concentration were analyzed. Vibration isolators consisting of magneto-sensitive elastomers promise to have more functionality than conventional isolators as they can change their dynamic stiffness rapidly, continuously and reversibly under the application of an external magnetic field. Experimental measurements on MS components show that a better performance may be obtained at applications where small amplitudes are required, using soft matrix materials and with concentration close to a critical particle volume fraction.

  • Single tone excitation techniques for determination of non-linear acoustic properties of perforates
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering, ISMA 2010. - 9789073802872 ; , s. 597-609
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses experimental techniques for obtaining the acoustic properties of in-duct samples with non-linear acoustic characteristics. The methods developed are intended for studies of non-linear energy transfer to higher harmonics for samples such as perforates or other material used as top sheets in aircraft engine liners and automotive mufflers. New single sided and double sided multi-port techniques, using sinusoidal excitation, for characterisation of samples with non-linear properties are developed and experimentally tested.  The results of the preliminary experimental tests show that these new techniques can give results which are useful for understanding non-linear energy transfer to higher harmonics.

  • Investigation of stress-distribution in a car tyre with regards to rolling resistance
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of ISMA2010 International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering including USD2010, Leuven, 20-22 September 2010. - 9789073802872 ; , s. 3977-3990
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years the method of waveguide finite element modelling has emerged as a suitable tool for the simulation of the structural behaviour of tyres. It combines cross-sectional finite element modelling with classical wave propagation methods along the waveguide. Compared to traditional finite element methods it is numerically much more efficient and provides greater physical insights into the vibrational behaviour. In an ongoing project an existing waveguide finite element model for the calculation of stationary (non-rolling) tyre vibrations is extended to allow for calculation of the stress distributions inside a rolling tyre being in contact with the ground. The results are used to identify local areas of high stress, which are not only important from a structural point of view but which can also be associated with high energy losses due to dissipation, hence affecting the overall rolling resistance of the tyre. The procedure and preliminary results will be presented.

  • Vibration dynamics of high speed train with Pareto optimized damping of bogie suspension to enhance safety and comfort
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of ISMA2010 International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering Including USD2010, Leuven, 20-22 September 2010, Editors P. Sas, B. Bergen. - 9789073802872 ; , s. 3477-3488
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A methodology to find the optimized, with respect to safety and comfort, lateral damping of both the primary and secondary suspensions of a bogie system for a high speed train (HST) has been developed, implemented and evaluated. The vibration dynamics of three-car HST with safety-comfort Pareto optimized lateral damping of bogie system is analyzed. The sensitivity of vibration dynamics of the HST having Pareto optimized lateral damping and traveling with 250 km/h is studied for different vehicle speeds, wheels and rails wornness, train service loads and frictions between wheels and rails. Numerical results show that Pareto optimized lateral damping of bogie system can significantly improve passenger comfort while maintain safety and reliability of HST performance.

  • Dynamic substructuring in metal cutting machine chatter
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of ISMA2010 International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering Including USD2010, Leuven, 20-22 September 2010. - 9789073802872
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In metal cutting, spindle speed optimization for process stability is one example of action that may reduceproduction time and increase process reliability. For process stability, it is crucial to avoid regenerativevibrations and thereby enable larger cutting depth, with higher material removal rate as benefit. A spindlespeed optimization is usually based on the machine tool and cutting tool assembly’s frequency response atthe tool-tip. This is normally obtained by dynamic testing of the full assembly. In this paper we use areceptance coupling technique to reduce testing time by synthesizing the frequency response displacementfunction of the system. The method utilizes test data of the machine tool with an inserted blank tooltogether with a finite element representation of the real cutting tool. The coupling is made via a state spacecoupling technique. Comparisons are made with data from full system tests and a stability prediction isdemonstrated.
