  • Interventions, durations, effects : architecting the city and the world
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Knowing (by) Designing. - Ghent/Brussels : LUCA, Sint-Lucas School of Architecture, Ghent/Brussels and KU Leuven, Faculty of Architecture. - 9789081323864 ; , s. 614-621
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We define architecture not as an ‘it’ but as a process, or an apparatus; in our sense, architecture is a verb: to architect. Rather than refer to the (paradoxical) limiting of intervention’s in-between, we posit a new concept: intravention. Intra’s focus on the ‘within’ establishes intraventions as already a part of the spaces and times in which they are ‘intravening’.We find this a very productive notion, one which is useful in defining the (makeshift) edges of specific situations with which we engage; it helps us negotiate the expanse of the relational meshwork of material, sensory and discursive flows, and allows us to start ‘doing/making’ immediately. When we ‘intravene’, we cut within the site we inhabit to conceive and construct it. It also speaks about intentionality: one decides what the intravention includes or excludes. It is therefore an intensely political act, as well as an aesthetic one. We will discuss the notion of intravention in relationship to its ability to interfere with the complex making of the city and the world, articulating, detonating, and re-articulating relations, actions and intra-actions between various things, apparatuses, people, ANTs, spiders and, very possibly, sugar dispensers.

  • Architectural Laborations. Setting up research as strategic tools in architectural practice
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Knowing (by) Designing. - 9789081323864 ; , s. 754-763
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Challenges in architectural projects and built environments are increasing and there are growing needs to integrate different fields of knowledge in more conscious ways. The interest for research within architectural practices has grown enormously during last years, and is used as a strategic tool to develop architectural design as well as a trademark to attract both employees and clients. This paper will as one case from the ongoing changes in architectural practice, present some of the research initiatives at White arkitekter, the largest architectural office in Scandinavia and in which the author has worked since 2000. The office has a long tradition of research and development, but last years there have been intensified efforts to develop more coordinated research and to integrate it closer into creative practice. The paper will elaborate on the notions of research used within the firm, and presents efforts to set up a distributed research laboratory environment including practice-based doctoral projects working part-time in architectural projects. The intention is to show how research activities could be connected closer to architectural design practice, and meet the contemporary challenges to elucidate and use designerly thinking as well as the specific knowledge generated in the practice of the field.

  • Developing Making Scholarship. From Making Disciplines to Field-specific Research in Creative Practices
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Knowing (by) Designing. - 9789081323864 ; , s. 40-49
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a project which will result in a book with the intentions to present and discuss certain developments in establishing field-specific scholarship within architecture, design and the arts. The idea is that the book will address three periods which differed in their degree of maturing towards a more established and “self-confident” scholarly culture in several schools of architecture in Belgium, Sweden and Norway, where the authors have had the opportunity to teach at the level of doctoral studies. The intention of the book is that each period studied will be illustrated by cases of “excellent research practice” which we regard to have played the role of turning points in the development of the recent decades. These cases will not be discussed in this paper, since its aim is to present the overall set-up of the project and our stance in relation to its different aspects. The book project builds on the authors’ own writings from the period 2001–2012 and will be supplied by commentaries on the role we have played in developing a certain model of understanding what field-specific research in creative practices could be.

  • Experience in a design profession
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Knowing (by) Designing, edited by Johan Verbeke and Burak Pak, proceedings of the conference Knowing (by) Designing at LUCA, Sint-Lucas School of Architecture Brussels 22-23 May 2013.. - 9789081323864 ; , s. 810-818
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper will be an attempt to describe the outcome and architectural work within EEPOCH where different professions are participating, and creativity is used in a frame of firm methodology. The design and execution of workshops e.g. where individual interpretations can be processed in true cooperation have been used among other techniques and methods within a framework of a multiple case study in the first part of the project, 2009-2011.
