  • Condition monitoring and risk & relability analysis
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineering Management. - Luleå : Luleå tekniska universitet. - 9789163188060 ; , s. 555-561
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Qualitative and semi-quantitative reliability and risk analyses are usually performed, using inductive analysis approaches, e.g. FMEA/FMECA (Failure Mode and Effects [Criticality] Analysis), PHA (Preliminary Hazard Analysis) or HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study). After the identification of possible failure modes or hazards, their possible effects at different system levels are estimated. In several cases the possible effects at higher system levels are very severe, indicating that the system under study is highly unreliable or hazardous. This conclusion, however, can be modified by taking into account the effect of current controls or countermeasures that can reduce the likelihood of an adverse effect or reduce the severity. Condition monitoring provides a useful risk control approach, primarily aiming at reducing the likelihood of an adverse effect. In this paper this risk control approach is described in some more detail and a proposed methodology is described. This methodology combines FMEA and ETA (Event Tree Analysis), with special attention taken to the utilization of Condition Monitoring.

  • Total Quality Maintenance for Assuring Continuous Improvement of Company’s Profitability and Competitiveness : Case Studies
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Condition monitoring and diagnostic engineering management. - : Luleå universitet, Luleå. - 9789163188060 ; , s. 181-190
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industries with intensive invested capital demands healthy processes continuously to achieve their economic goals, because any interruption of the production caused by any equipment malfunction or failure may result in a major disruption of output or even production shutdown. Thus, an effective maintenance concept should be evolved to provide the required tools, data and methods for detecting deviations at an early stage to maintain and enhance the availability of machinery, product quality and profits. A new concept of condition-based maintenance (CBM), Total Quality Maintenance (TQMain) is presented. It aims to maintain not only machines but the quality of the essential elements involved in the production process, such as methods, operational conditions, personnel competence, raw material, quality and managerial systems. The major results have achieved in this study areEvidence of prolonging the bearing's mean effective live by using more accurate diagnosis and prognosis are confirmed when faulty bearing installation, faulty machinery design and harsh environmental condition are considered.Changes in the machine speed and load influence the information delivered by vibration signals.Applying vibration spectral analysis, it is possible to detect the deviations in the quality of a product during the processing time and before it is completed.Maintenance profit of one paper machine was found to be at minimum about 3.58 MSEK yearly. The main conclusion is; identifying and eliminating causes behind deviations in quality and equipment condition at an early stage are vital to accomplish continuous improvements and to assure longer machine live and high quality products at competitive price. Several case studies have been conducted during the last ten years to verify the applicability and benefits of TQMain are discussed

  • The Factory-in-a-Box Concept and Its Maintenance Application
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineering Managmement. - Lulea, Sweden. - 9789163188060 ; , s. 161-170
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The “Factory-in-a-Box” concept is currently being developed in a Swedish research project and consists of standardized production modules that are installed in a container and transported by e.g. a truck or by train. The modules may rapidly be combined into production systems that can be reconfigured for a new product and/or scaled to handle new volumes. The key features of this futuristic production system concept are thus flexibility, mobility, and speed. The objective with this paper is to discuss how research within the area of maintenance and condition monitoring will help realizing flexibility, mobility, and speed within the Factory-in-a-Box concept. The paper presents how maintenance will be an important enabler in the Factory-in-a-Box project and will explain and describe how maintenance should be used in achieving high availability.

  • Dynamic behaviour of the Vindel River railway bridge
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineering Management. - Luleå : Luleå tekniska universitet. - 9789163188060 ; , s. 721-729
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish Railway administration has launched several projects aimed at increasing the accessibility of the railway lines in northern Sweden to meet future demands. One of these lines connects the southern and northern parts of Sweden and constitutes one of the major arteries for the transportation of heavy goods. Major investment are planned to upgrade the load bearing capacity of this railway line. The work is mainly focused on the larger structures and their dynamical properties. These properties can be used to assess existing infrastructure and to evaluate the performance. Advantages are obvious since the existing structural integrity form the base for investments in structural repair and upgrade of bridges. The Vindel River Railway Bridge situated 55 kilometers northwest of Umeå came into focus when large motion was discovered during train passages. The behaviour of the bridge crossing the river of Vindeln has been measured two times. Measurements of displacements and acceleration of the bridge during train passages has been conducted, the first measurements was done to give more experience on the motion of the bridge and to try out new sensors. The second measurement gave more information about the bridge's motion, results that could be used to calibrate a 3D FE-Model of the bridge used in the study. Based on the measurements, eigenfrequencies in the range of 0 to 8 Hz could be detected, modal shapes up to the ninth order could be extracted, deflections and transverse displacements for different sets of train and different train speeds were also found. However, new measurements are planned for this summer and will hopefully reinforce the already attained result and give answers to some of the unresolved questions.

  • A customer and product support perspective of e-maintenance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineering Management. - Luleå : Luleå tekniska universitet. - 9789163188060 ; , s. 243-252
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today the providers of customer and product support related to military aircraft are facing major challenges. Traditionally, aircraft systems have stringent requirements on safety. In addition to this, the requirements on dependability, costs, and security have increased in importance. These changes, together with an increased diversity of customer requirements in a global utilization environment, add to the complexity of providing appropriate support solutions. The increased customer requirements have also lead to concepts such as total solution selling, or functional products, where the customers are offered availability performance to a fixed price. In order to enable efficient support solutions in a global support environment, e-Maintenance is seen as one important building block. e-Maintenance includes monitoring, collection, and distribution of realtime system health data and information to all stakeholders independent of organizational belonging or geographical location, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (24-7). The concept of e-Maintenance is realized through the application of Information & Communication Technology (ICT), which integrates built-in tests, external tests at different maintenance echelons, and other sources of support information. The purpose of this paper is to describe important requirements and expectations that a provider of customer and product support related to military aircraft systems has on e-Maintenance in a global support environment.

  • Estimation of parameter for rail degradation
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineering Management. - Luleå : Luleå tekniska universitet. - 9789163188060 ; , s. 605-612
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rail degradation is a significant problem for rail industries. Wear and fatigue comprises major component of rail degradation. It depends on operational conditions such as train speed, axle load, rail-wheel material type, size and profile, track construction, characteristics of bogie type, Million Gross Tonnes (MGT), curvature, traffic type, weather and environmental conditions. Development of prediction model related to those defects leading to rail breaks and/or rail replacements is vital for economic and safe operation of rail services. Estimation of parameter for failure models is necessary for accurate prediction of expected number of rail defects over a period of time based on Million Gross Tonnes (MGT) traffic, operating conditions and maintenance strategies. This paper focuses on collection and analysis of field data for various defects developed in rail track over a period of time for estimation of parameter for models predicting degradation of rails.
