  • CNC machining process planning productivity – a qualitative survey
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of <em>The International</em> 3'rd <em>Swedish Production Symposium</em>, SPS 09. - 9789163360060 ; , s. 228-235
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Process planning is the link between design and manufacturing and consequently an important function, since it influences many of the company objectives. However, many companies have little knowledge about their process planning function and the efficiency is thus not optimal. The paper focuses on the automation level of process planning as a mean to improve process planning efficiency. Six CNC machining companies was interviewed and accordingly analysed through a five dimensional automation level model to understand their process planning work. The main findings are that the automation level is low and concurrent engineering is lacking in many of the investigated companies.

  • Spatial design and communication for Improved Production Performance
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: <em>Proceedings of The International 3rd Swedish Production Symposium</em>. - Swedish Production Academy. - 9789163360060 ; , s. 317-324
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper present research results on how a spatial design can communicate and supportproduction performance in relation to lean production. The main concern of this paper is todiscuss the role of interior design and its affect on humans in a production system and tocontribute to a more profound understanding of lean production from a communicative aspect. This paper is focusing on three case studies: a project studio, a prototype workshop, and adevelopment workshop in manufacturing companies. The study in the development workshopis conducted during a period of two years, with an ambitious survey as follow up. Thetwo others are context cases to exemplify and investigate the role of interior design in anindustrial environment, with project studios as the main subject. The research method chosen is case study methodology including a literature review relatedto examples from the industrial case studies. In industry, spatial design in interaction with visual artefacts can be used to reduce the 8thwaste by supporting effective communication, cross-functional work, decision-making processes, reinforcing the project identity, facilitating project management, save time, shortenled time for development projects and inspire employees to a positive view of the companyand the project.

  • Machine Hammer Peening – A Substitute for Polishing of Pressing Die Surfaces?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International 3'rd Swedish Production Symposium. - 9789163360060 ; :Day 1, s. 184-189
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Machine Hammer Peening (MHP) is a new method for finishing of surfaces. With this method the workpiece surface is hammered with a spherical carbide tool. The main objective of the study was to evaluate whether the MHP method could be used as a plausible substitute for manual polishing in pressing die manufacturing. To do this, sample surfaces were hammered and evaluated. Changes to the surfaces were assessed using surface roughness measurements, hardness measurements and optical images. First of all, the workpiece surface was smoothened. Secondly, the surface hardness was increased significantly. Thirdly, the nodules on the workpiece surface were effected. They appeared to be smaller and not as visible. It is probable that they had been plastically deformed and that some of the graphite in the nodules was replaced by material from the surrounding steel matrix. By replacing the graphite in the larger nodule cavities by surrounding steel material, a die surface is created which would be less prone to galling. In addition, with MHP, the amount of polishing needed to manufacture a die surface can be reduced because of the smoothening effect.

  • The key Concepts of Lean Production and Anticipated Effects on Worker Well-being of Lean Production Concepts
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The International 3'rd Swedish Production Symposium, SPS '09, 2-3 December, Göteborg, Sweden. - 9789163360060 ; , s. 213-219
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Lean Production concept was first heard of in 1988. The concept builds upon the notion of the Toyota Production System (TPS). Despite the vast amount of material that has been published on the topic there still seems to be no common definition of the term. Such a definition is not provided in this paper but four key concepts of Lean Production and a proposition of a conceptual model are presented. In addition an account of the expected main effects in respect to worker well-being of a number of concepts associated with Lean Production is given.

  • Process Planning Issues in Air Bending of Sheet Metal
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The International 3rd Swedish Production Symposium. - : The Swedish Production Academy. - 9789163360060 ; , s. 334-341
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an overview of important aspects of air bending of sheet metal parts. Air bending is potentially a very flexible process when it comes to processing small batch sizes with high variety. However, to exploit these benefits requires that both the processing of individual bends and the overall processing of a part be executed adequately. Important aspects are the bending process itself, in particular modeling and the calculation of punch penetration and bend allowance, the determination of bending sequences, and tolerance reasoning. Some problems related to spring back in the air bending may be solved by combining it with for instance laser forming. Some problems related to bend sequencing or accuracy may be solved in the design stage.
