  • Läraren som arbetsledare vid grupparbete i klassrummet
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The individual and the group - Future chalanges. - Göteborg : University of Gothenburg. - 9789163392382 ; , s. 8-18
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main purpose of this paper is to increase and deepen the knowledge about teacher’s management of group work in the classroom. A more specific aim is to create and present a model illustrating different possible ways for teachers’ management appropriate for group work. The result shows that it is beneficial, but not sufficient, to use the two concepts leadership and teachership, to create a complete model. To ascertain a complete model it is also necessary to pay attention to the teachers’ considerations, which play a decisive influence on teachers’ willingness to use group work. By combining leadership, teachership and considerations it was possible to create and present a model of four possible ways for teachers’ management pertaining group work.

  • Att bli mobbad i skolan : En grundad teori om offerprocessen
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The individual and the group – Future challenges. - Göteborg : Göteborgs universitet. - 9789163392382 ; , s. 103-117
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Context  Problem-based learning (PBL) is widely used in higher education. There is evidence available that students and faculty are highly satisfied with PBL. Nevertheless, in educational practice problems are often encountered, such as tutors who are too directive, problems that are too well-structured, and dysfunctional tutorial groups.Purpose  The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that PBL has the potential to prepare students more effectively for future learning because it is based on four modern insights into learning: constructive, self-directed, collaborative and contextual. These four learning principles are described and it is explained how they apply to PBL. In addition, available research is reviewed and the current debate in research on PBL is described.Discussion  It is argued that problems encountered in educational practice usually stem from poor implementation of PBL. In many cases the way in which PBL is implemented is not consistent with the current insights on learning. Furthermore, it is argued that research on PBL should contribute towards a better understanding of why and how the concepts of constructive, self-directed, collaborative and contextual learning work or do not work and under what circumstances. Examples of studies are given to illustrate this issue.

  • Perceived fairness of six allocation decision rules in the context of hiring and firing
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The individual and the group - Future challenges. - Göteborg : University of Gothenburg. - 9789163392382 ; , s. 44-51
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Managers decide daily about recruiting new people into their organization and sometimes in times of economic turmoil they decide to let people go. The issue of fairness is at the heart of these decisions. In the present study we are interested in exploring the perceived fairness of six decision rules in the context of hiring and firing. 306 participants responded to one of two different versions of a scenario based questionnaire. Half of the participants answered questions about the fairness of six allocation decision rules by which hiring for a job took place, and the other half rated the same rules for firing. In general, contribution rules were deemed much fairer than the equality rules. In the case of hiring, respondents considered the contribution of ability as the fairest rule while in the firing condition the contribution of effort was rated as the fairest rule.

  • Socializing the notion of well-being in psychology : Some preliminary results from a validation study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The individual and the group - Future challenges. - Göteborg : University of Gothenburg. - 9789163392382 ; , s. 32-43
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Well-being is mostly defined and measured in terms of life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect in psychology. As human well-being depends on need satisfaction, and many of our needs as humans are satisfied with and by other people, it is argued in this chapter that the current conceptualization and measurement of well-being is inadequate. Specifically, although there are some expectations, psychological research on well-being has largely neglected the social aspects or the context of well-being. It is thus argued that in order to understand the social nature of well-being several dimensions have to be considered. The proposed dimensions are social integration, social acceptance, social contribution, social actualization, and social coherence. Results from a validation study provide tentative empirical support for the proposed conceptual structure.

  • Inter-group relations between a group of football supporters, subgroups, and context in the initial phase of riots
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The individual and the group - Future challenges. - Göteborg : University of Gothenburg. - 9789163392382 ; , s. 91-102
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Within the frame of a project describing, analysing, and interpreting  inter-group actions in large groups, we analysed a ten-minute video-sequence during a so-called high-risk footballmatch when supporters acted violently. The local derby in Stockholm, Sweden, took place in august 2008. When these two teams meet usually high tension between the supporter groups develops and a large number of police officers are present, trying to prevent riots. The particular incident investigated took place right after a controversial penalty kick. The judgement of the referee was questioned and some fireworks were launched.Findings of a thorough video-analysis show extensive inter-group activities both between supporter subgroups and between supporter groups, as well as with the group of police officers and security personnel. At the same time evidence for self-policing could be found.
