  • Ten Guidelines for the Implementation of Information Systems : Research in Progress
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 31th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, IRIS 31. - Åre, Sweden. - 9789186073121
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a Model for Implementation of Information Systems (IS). Its focusis on the organizational aspects of an IS implementation, where the objective is tosecure that the to-be IS users will use the to-be IS; hence hardware, software, andother aspects of the information technology itself are not accounted by this model. The key challenge addressed here is the many reported failures of IS implementationas derived from the organizational challenges rather than purely informationtechnology. The proposed model is built on the so-called Organization InformationSystem paradigm that regards an organization and its IS as one conceptual unitrather than considering the IS as an adjunct to the organization – the latter typical forthe conventional Management Information System paradigm. Therefore, the ISimplementation is contextualised within a process for the development oforganizations, and proposes the “Effect-Behaviour-Resource-Influence Loop” as amechanism of change, of the changed organization. In this, it is the influence of theresources – human and machines – that changes the behaviour that in turn leads tothe change of effects, toward the desired state. Further, the proposed Model forInformation System Implementation provides also three needs of an organization tobe subjected of an IS intervention; these are the “change Motivation”, the “changeCapability”, and the “change Ability”. The proposed model is an outcome of a set ofcase studies of IS implementation, conducted in an Action Research mode, andinformed by selected theoretical bodies as well as the empirical challenge tosuccessfully implement an IS. The key contribution of this model is its empiricalexperience and its comprehensive approach to an IS implementation, rather than ananalytical focusing on a few variables only. However, the proposed model is still in itshypothetical phase of theory development, and is in a need of both further crossfertilisationwith various theoretical bodies as well as further empirical experience, where validations and modifications are made.

  • Customer Service process IT-enabled support Fit or misfit? : a real world case
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Asproth, V. (ed), Proceedings of 31th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia. - Sundsvall : Mittuniversitetet. - 9789186073121
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a description of a real world case which focuses on a method to define the major gaps between functional requirements and existing support in a traditional ERP system. To identify and define the major gaps the method is using short interviews, existing documentation and graphic process diagrams. The report covers the process Customer Contact – Order Acknowledgement for a global chemicals manufacturer, Perstorp. The group in focus for this study is Customer Service. The results of this case were presented to Perstorp’s Customer Service as well as IT management as background material to assess improvement possibilities for both processes, IT support and for a new ERP strategy. Many other businesses are in similar situations. The aim in publishing this research paper is that these findings can be of practical use to other businesses as well as be an empirical foundation for other papers and possibly further research.

  • Graphical modeling techniques and usefulness in the Model Driven Arcitechture : Which are the criteria for a "good" Computer independent model?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The 31st Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS31). - : IRIS. - 9789186073121 ; , s. 13-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Object Management Group (OMG) has presented a framework for model driven development: Model Driven Architecture (MDA). The departure point of this paper is an interest in process oriented modeling techniques relevant for a computer independent model in the MDA. We searched for the answer on the question what constitutes a "good" computer independent model (CIM). To get an answer we were using OMG:s demands of the modeling techniques that should be used when developing CIMs and found four process oriented modeling techniques which could serve as candidates. These four process oriented modeling techniques is analyzed based by Moody"s quality criterions. The findings indicates that there are only one candidate, BPMN, that meets some of Moody"s quality criterions, but there also drawbacks in BPMN, such as the criterions; expressiveness and emphasis.

  • Minimizing the time spent on transformations between computer independent models and platform independent models
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The 31st Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS31). - : IRIS. - 9789186073121 ; , s. 12-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A well known trade-off effect with modelling is that when it is user friendly it becomes ambiguous and when it has a formal notation, that makes it unambiguous, it becomes less user friendly. A well known solution to this dilemma is to use models on various levels of formalism where the least formalized models are known to be more user friendly and the most formalized models are well suited for being directly translated to program code. This article investigates how the user friendliness at an informal level can be combined with the accuracy needed at a more formal level of modeling. It aims at combining an informal user friendly perspective with a formal developer perspective in order to minimize the time spent on transformation mapping between user friendly models and developer models. Theoretical data and empirical data indicates possibilities of minimizing the work with transformations between models. The results show that a number of developed criteria can be used to secure the user friendliness of models that are used in communications between the designer and the end user.

  • SSM Inspired Organizational Change in a North American University Library : Lessons Learned
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 31th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, IRIS 31. - 9789186073121
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This organizational change initiative involved nineteen project participants in guided application of Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) tools to rethink, repurpose, and retool organizational outcomes from 2003-2006. Action research results suggest the efficacy of using this approach for interactive (re)design of technology-enabled environments, systems and tools. This paper reports on learning insights which inform participants’ cultivation of user-centric, inquiry based relationships with both co-workers and system users to animate and enable responsive participatory design philosophy, practices and outcomes.

  • Metadata for presentation / preservation of physical structure
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 31th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia. - : Mittuniversitetet. - 9789186073121
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates support for presentation of physical structure in existing metadata schemas used in digital preservation. Physical structure in this case is entirely focused on visual attributes for digital objects, in particular web-forms of the kind that is beeing used in many eGovernment services. In order to spot gaps and problem areas, practical examples in the form of demonstrator objects is constructed using PREMIS, and to a lesser extent utilising METS behavior section. METS is also tried as a wrapper for PREMIS. The new version of PREMIS (2.0) is found to be useful, much depending on the more refined support (both related to earlier PREMIS and METS) for significant properties.

  • Organizing for Future Access to the Cultural Hewritage
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 31th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, IRIS 31. - : Mittuniversitetet. - 9789186073121
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How to organize with the aim of securing the digital cultural heritage is the main interest of this paper. We provide a description of the current situation at an authority that deals with this question, and its personnels’ view of their assignment. The objective for our analysis and discussion is to explore the suitability of the Viable System Model as organizing principle for long-term digital preservation. We have found that the model elucidates several important aspects, such as coordinating functions and information and communication channels. In addition it provides the advantage of a holistic perspective, as well as attention to the environment. These aspects are crucial for long-term digital preservation. Therefore, we find the model suitable since it clarifies necessary processes and functions if the digital cultural heritage is to prevail.

  • Constructing representations of users needs : a living lab approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 31th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia. - : Mittuniversitetet. - 9789186073121
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The difficulties of understanding system requirements early on in the systems development process is an issue being discussed in the information systems discipline for several years. The requirement elicitation phase is seen as the most important phase, but it is still the least understood activity during the systems development process. Little research has been published which clarify, discuss and theorize user needs and its characteristics and how these could be used as implications for design of new IT-systems. In this paper, we aim to generate general insights about users and their situations by elaborating with situational user expressions and by this start developing theory about users' needs and requirements. During our studies, we have found that users express their needs and desires that are both dependent on the current situation they act in, but users also express their desires in general ways. Following a constructivist perspective, we have found that the users' experiences and the use of stimuli material influence what users express.
