  • Ingår i: Facing the Sea. - Lund : Nordic Academic Press. - 9789189361034 ; , s. 217-237
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the Second World War a great number of teddy bears, dolls, and soft toyscrossed the Baltic Sea as their young owners escaped by boat from occupiedEstonia and Latvia to Sweden. The children’s material culture associated withthe Great Escape is forever soaked with memories of these sea journeys. As partof maritime history, they draw our attention to the children’s representation, and call for a broader take on maritime museums’ collecting.

  • Maritime military archery : Bowmen on European warships, 1000–1600
  • 2021. - 1
  • Ingår i: Facing the Sea. - Lund : Nordic Academic Press. - 9789189361034 ; , s. 41-74
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a considerable research gap in both maritime and military history concerning the naval use of bowmen. For over three millennia—spanning from the ancient Egyptians until around the year AD 1600—archery was a key component in maritime combat. This essay highlights the importance, flexibility, and impact of naval archery with special attention given to European waters in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period.

  • The architecture of the early modern sea routes into Stockholm
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Facing the Sea. - Lund : Nordic Academic Press. - 9789189361034 ; , s. 15-40
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A sea route is more than a simple path between obstacles formed by Nature. Harbour installations, fortifications, customs offices, and umpteen other expressions of material culture formed the architecture of the sea routes – an architecture that underwent a significant remake in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This essay looks at how the Swedish state took control of the natural landscape along the sea routes into Stockholm and transformed them.

  • Here, There and Everywhere : Ash Disposal at Sea and the Construction of aMaritime Memory Landscape
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Facing the Sea. - Lund : Nordic Academic Press. - 9789189361034 ; , s. 263-283
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ash disposal at sea is a rapidly growing phenomenon in Sweden. To scatterthe ashes of a loved one over water may appear particularly appealing if thedeceased had had a strong connection to the sea. It may also give rise to private sites of memory in the maritime landscape as the mourners attribute newmeanings to the sea.

  • Swedish vessels in the Prize Papers : Cases from the American Revolutionary War, 1776-1783
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Facing the Sea. - Lund : Nordic Academic Press. - 9789189361034 ; , s. 103-126
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Trade under neutral flags is not a modern phenomenon. Even in the eighteenth century, Swedish ships under a neutral flag traded with and between belligerents, and the American Revolutionary War saw a boom in Swedish shipping. But Britain, which dominated the seas, tried to curb and even stop the trade under neutral flags. This essay considers Swedish ships seized by the British navy and privateers and the patterns of Swedish shipping in wartime in 1776–1783, using the ship seizures recorded in the Prize Papers – an extraordinarily rich and underused archive.
