  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Långa linjer och många fält. - Stockholm : Acta Universitatis Stockholmensis. - 9789198194777 - 9789198194760 ; , s. 137-155
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When thinking of Iceland, two specific types of ice come to mind: the ice that is formed on the many glaciers in the country, and the sea ice that is brought to the coasts by winds and ocean currents. Because of space constraints in this volume, the discussion here will focus entirely on the phenomenon of sea ice. This paper is not concerned with ice as a scientific phenomenon, but with the image of sea ice as presented in a variety of different narrative genres concerning Iceland. However, a few words of elucidation will set the stage for the discussion. Ice on the sea is formed in two main ways. Either by being broken off in the form of ice bergs from calving glaciers, or else it may form directly on the surface of the sea as frozen seawater. Most of the ice reaching Iceland is of the latter kind, and arrives by way of the East Greenland current. It is the northern, northwestern, and eastern coasts of Iceland which are most frequently affected, and, in the past, it occurred most often in the winter and spring seasons. It is an infrequent visitor in the present climate.

  • Om den ekonomisk-historiska konsten att läsa skönlitteratur
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Långa linjer och många fält. - Stockholm : Acta Universitatis Stockholmiensis. - 9789198194777 - 9789198194760 ; , s. 279-323
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The economic-historic art of reading novels has the potential to generate more complex images of social and economic contexts than what the analysis of more traditional source material sometimes can. Studying novels can also give ideas of researching other circumstances than are perhaps common within economic history. The novel’s perspective makes it possible to observe overlooked circumstances. Finally, the reading of novels can make a search for the everyday perceptions of economic and social circumstances easier. This is how the reading of novels can contribute to economic historic research. At the heart of our reading are the economic and social processes and contexts against which the main plot is usually told. Three novels from the first half of the twentieth century have been used. They all depict life in the countryside and by using these we try to uncover ideas about reactions to the technical and organizational development in farming, the migration from the countryside, especially by young women, and the economic inequalities between the urban life and the countryside.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Långa linjer och många fält. - Stockholm : Acta Universitatis Stockholmiensis. - 9789198194777 ; , s. 207-228
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To write the life of another is quite a complex matter. Apparently, in the academic field the biography as a genre has been questioned. While Barthes and Foucault suggested the Death of the Author in the 1960s, the ‘biographical turn’ has made its way back to popularity in the 21st century. This article examines how to write a biography with scientific and critical ambitions. The article concludes that the biographical approach can offer a deeper understanding of the individual in a historical context. However, by using theoretical and methodological tools the genre can be improved.
