- This chapter deals with Finnish cultural memory post-89 through ananalysis of Finnish war films and their reception during the years1989-2007. The discursive formation of Tuntematon Sotilas (The UnknownSoldier) is used as a point of departure for the study. It is arguedthat the discursive formation is characterised by four discourses:the historical discourse, the discourse of the witness, the discourse ofvictimisation and the discourse of the defensive victory, which remainintact despite radical turns in Finnish history and foreign policy sincethe fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Thus, although there is a changeinto post-modern cultural memory the hegemony of previous discoursesare not overturned due to a persistent nationalist and affirmativehistoriography.
