• What is “strong presence” of a message in a steering document?
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings of Norma 11, The Sixth Nordic Conference on Mathematics Education in Reykjavík, May 11-14, 2011. - Reykjavík, Iceland : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• The aim of this paper is to discuss what a “strong presence” of a message in a syllabuscould be. The discussion takes a starting point in what we call the reformmessage; that what mathematics is can not only be described in terms of content andprocedures, but must also be defined in terms of competencies, e.g. problem solving, reasoning and communication. The analyzed document is the Swedish syllabus forthe first course at upper secondary school. Different ways, both quantitative andqualitative, of determining what a strong presence of a message could be are presentedand discussed.

• A calculus lecture : What made it good?
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings of Norma 11. - Reykjavik : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659 ; , s. 167-176
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This paper reports from a study that investigates, from a student and a teacher perspective, the fact that the large group lecture format prevails and attracts students in undergraduate mathematics education despite the many arguments put forward against the educational value of lectures. The focus here is on students’ views on specific aspects of one calculus lecture they just attended.

• Learning fractions : transformations between representations from a social semiotic perspective of multimodality
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings of Norma 11. - Reykjavík : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659 ; , s. 217-226
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This study presents a tentative framework for studying the learning of fractions in the context of transformations between different forms of representations. The framework is used in an empirical sample of how eight 10-year-old students express understanding of activities which were developed to challenge them to reflect on different ways of representing aspects of the concept of fractions. The framework is based on a social semiotic perspective of multimodality. The analysis discloses how the framework helps in structuring our understanding of the interplay between representations in the learning of fractions. Specifically, we saw how concrete physical material and gestures complemented the symbolic and spoken language in the students’ solution strategies of different tasks.

• To choose or not to choose mathematics : voices of students schooling at a gymnasium
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings of Norma 11. - Reykjavík, Iceland : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659 ; , s. 267-277
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This paper portrays voices of students pursuing mathematics at their gymnasium. Obtained through narrative interviews, the students voiced were observed and interacted with through their academic year. The opting out by one of the students from the standard level course for another course less demanding, forms backdrop to voices reported. An attempt is made to look beyond the label of modernity and seek to understand how the learning of mathematics by students is intimately connected to their experience of schooling. An example of close-to-practice research, highlighting tensions and contradictions of classroom practice, is presented.

• Expanding or limiting : a re-analysis of a researcher's interaction with students in a modelling session
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings of NORMA 11. - Reykjavik : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659 ; , s. 349-358
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• The focus of this paper is methodological and theoretical. By means of a re-analysis of a transcript from a research publication, we attempt to show how the researcher, in a similar way as we have observed teachers in classrooms, guides the students towards more or less general mathematical investigations in the context of solving a task. We intend to raise methodological issues related to the original as compared to our interpretation of the data. In addition, we want to exemplify the starting point of the development of a language of description that allows accounting for the emergence and distribution of unequal attainment in mathematics at the micro-level of classroom interaction.

• Future challenges of mathematics education research in the Nordic region : Young researchers’ perspective
• 2011
• Ingår i: Proceedings of NORMA 11. - Reijkjavik : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• In the last decade research in mathematics education has grown and consolidated in the Nordic countries. New and younger researchers are entering the field as a result of the organization of solid doctoral programs and the growth of teaching and research environments in higher education institutions. The social, cultural and economic contexts of our countries have also changed in the last decade. The question of which are the main challenges for research in the years to come is worth exploring for a community starting a new decade of work. The intention of the panel is to generate a discussion in the community by having young researchers present their views on: (1) which topics of research the Nordic region has contributed to the world and that deserve being strengthened in the future; (2) which new topics of research that may become relevant as social changes pose new demands on our knowledge and understanding of the practices of mathematics education in the educational system; and (3) which institutional affordances and constraints young researchers experience for the development of research

• The mathematics initiative : unequal access to educational improvement
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings of NORMA 11. - Reykjavik : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659 ; , s. 369-378
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• The mathematics initiative is a government initiative to develop mathematics teaching in order to improve students’ achievement in mathematics. In an application procedure, a municipality can suggest one or more development projects and get financial support from the Swedish National Agency of Education. About half of the municipalities that participate are successful. In this paper, I will argue that municipalities that perform at an intermediate level or above are more likely to submit a competitive project application than low-performing municipalities

• EFFECTIVE TEACHING THROUGH PROBLEM-SOLVING BY SEQUENCING AND CONNECTING STUDENT SOLUTIONS
• 2011
• Ingår i: Proceedings of NORMA11: The sixth Nordic conference on mathematics education in Reykjavik, May 11-14 2011 . - Reykjavik : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659 ; , s. 425-434
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• How can researchers support teachers in the complexity of orchestrating productive mathematical whole-class discussions based on students’ solutions to challenging problems? This study has two aims: Firstly, to study how the teacher can select, sequence and connect different student solutions in order to effectively orchestrate mathematical whole-class discussions. Secondly, to critically reflect on the role of the researchers in this intervention project. Analyses of audio recorded interviews and video recorded whole-class discussions result in suggestions for how student solutions can be sequenced in this particular case to set the scene for connecting them with each other and with key mathematical ideas. We further critically reflect on how we as researchers can improve our work in supporting practicing teachers.

• On the relationship between deterministic and probabilistic reasoning in modelling the chance of a natural phenomenon
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings of Norma 11. - Reykjavík : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This study aims at investigating the relationship between deterministic and probabilistic reasoning when students are asked to model and predict the outcomes of a real-world situation involving uncertainty. Twelve students, aged 8-9 years, participated in an outdoor located teaching activity which called for reflection on the growing of sunflowers. Based on the analysis, and previous research, the study suggests to structure an analysis on the relationship between deterministic and probabilistic reasoning according to four analytical relationships: Deterministic model and deterministic behaviour; Deterministic model and probabilistic behaviour; Probabilistic model and deterministic behaviour; Probabilistic model and probabilistic behaviour.
