  • Let’s Play Something New! : Designing for Digital Malleability in Outdoor Playgrounds
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mindtrek '23. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9798400708749 ; , s. 233-244
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Outdoor playground design has traditionally involved building installations that after inauguration remain stationary and rigid. New technologies open possibilities to reinvent playground design, but also provide new challenges. This paper focuses on how an outdoor playground can be made malleable through digital technology, and how such a design can increase play values and provide more flexible possibilities for an iterative design process, also after inauguration. During a total period of 5 years, using a Research-through-Design, and more specifically Reflective Design, approach researchers participated in a co-design project where a hybrid Internet of Things-enhanced permanent outdoor playground was developed and studied. The installations have been up and running around the clock, and used daily, for 2.5 years. The study suggests ways to design digitally malleable playground installations in permanent playgrounds. Further it points to areas where malleability functions may be restricted, due to reasons such as municipality policy, security and resources. It shows that the malleability functions were mainly used to increase usability, for educational purposes, to enhance play values, and to allow for appropriation and co-creation. The malleability features enabled an interactive design after design approach, and those possibilities were utilised in several ways, adding values to the playground, compared to rigid playground designs.

  • The Potential of Seated and Standing Short Duration Casual Exergames to Increase Positive Affect
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 26TH INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC MINDTREK, MINDTREK 2023. - : ASSOC COMPUTING MACHINERY. - 9798400708749 ; , s. 25-34
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Decreasing sedentary behavior and taking active short duration breaks offers several positive benefits for office workers. One way to encourage active short duration breaks in an office environment is through the use of casual exergames. Previous research has shown that casual exergames offer benefits in terms of enjoyment, exertion, and increased positive affect. However, little is known about whether this holds true for short duration (e.g., 2 minutes) casual exergames and if seated compared to standing gameplay offers similar benefits. Through a quasi-experimental within-subjects design we investigated whether positive affect differs before and after short duration casual exergaming for seated and standing positions, and if seated compared to standing short duration casual exergaming differs in terms of positive affect, perceived exertion, enjoyment, and performance. The main results showed that short duration casual exergaming increased positive affect significantly for both standing and seated gameplay and that there were no differences between seated and standing gameplay in terms of positive affect, perceived exertion, enjoyment, and performance.

  • Hands-On Workshop on Tabletop Role-Playing for Inclusive Design: Imagining Sustainable Futures for Older Adults'
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - 9798400708749 ; , s. 289-293
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Older adults' are often seen as a homogeneous group, disregarding their actual diversity in attitudes, abilities, and needs. This stereotypical view can seep into the research and design of digital technologies when developing for this age group, which can lead to those technologies not matching up with actual needs and abilities and thus not being picked up or engaged with. The goal of this workshop is to explore Tabletop Role-Playing Games (TTRPGs) as a method for HCI/UX to promote reflection on the concept of older adults' and to raise awareness for the heterogeneity of this demographic. The TTRPG adventure will be set in a sustainable future where a socio-ecological transformation has taken place; a transformation that can be significantly aided by digital technologies, which additionally stresses the need for a deeper reflection on the heterogeneity of all demographics involved in such a transformation, including older adults'. This workshop will contribute to an improved understanding of TTRPG as an approach to understanding diversity, paving the way to further research into inclusive design of digital technology for sustainability and beyond.

  • Listening to the Future : using Participatory Sound Fiction to Engage Young People in Urban Design
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mindtrek '23: Proceedings of the 26th International Academic Mindtrek Conference. - New York : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9798400708749 ; , s. 223-232
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In spatial planning of urban areas, there is a need for new methods for meaningful inclusion of less represented voices as those of young people. This study focuses on how participatory design, design fiction and sound design can be combined to engage youth in urban planning processes. This is investigated by developing and testing a method called participatory sound fiction. The method was tested with a group of young residents in a suburban area in Sweden. Sound fictions of the suburb in 2170 were created and discussed among the youth participants. The results show that through discussions and speculations about the future, important insights were revealed about the youths’ reality, which can be of value in spatial planning processes as well as in understandings of how the youth experiences their living area. Furthermore, the study found that sound can broaden youths’ perspective on their immediate environment, that participatory sound fiction has the potential to engage youths, and that youths prefer to discuss the present to feel that their voices are being heard.

  • Goal Playable Concepts Coupling Gameplay Design Patterns with Playable Concepts
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - 9798400708749
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present experiences of designing and implementing a series of playable concepts based on gameplay design patterns for goals and goal structures. These playable concepts are coupled with existing gameplay design patterns to enable complementary design knowledge representations, allowing different perspectives for the same phenomenon. Twenty-six playable concepts were created and are available online at itch.io. The paper discusses the details of the design process and reflects on the value of interactive representation of design knowledge and on coupling design knowledge representations. The paper contributes to the ongoing discussions in the game research community concerning documenting and disseminating game design knowledge.

  • Designerly ways of engaging with nature : exploring the methodological landscape of more-than-human design research
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mindtrek '23. - : ACM Digital Library. - 9798400708749 ; , s. 309-312
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this workshop, we will bring together designers and researchers working with, for, and around nature to facilitate a transversal con- versation around how to engage nature as a key part of our design processes. By deliberately adopting an open and ambiguous idea of what we mean by ‘nature’, we hope to embrace diverse kinds of more-than-human entanglements, including (but not only): farming, companion species, microbiomes, body ecologies, forests and other large-scale landscapes (e.g. oceans), or cohabitation in houses. We argue for the importance of taking such an open-ended perspective, to embrace all possible relevant vectors of nature-related design: multispecies, cohabitation, posthuman sustainability, posthuman care. . . The workshop is set as a as a platform for shared method- ological reflection through the lenses of a more-than-human ap- proach to posthuman research. It will primarily be in-person, given our aim of bringing researchers together and co-experiencing each others’ methods and techniques.

  • Towards Trustworthy and Understandable AI: Unraveling Explainability Strategies on Simplifying Algorithms, Appropriate Information Disclosure, and High-level Collaboration
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - : ACM Digital Library. - 9798400708749
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human-centered artificial intelligence (AI) has garnered significant attention. Explainability strategies based on the concept of explainable AI (XAI) are comprehensive sets of techniques and principles that help users establish understandable and trustworthy AI systems. However, existing explainability strategies still face numerous challenges in enabling users to understand AI system decisions better. This literature review aims to explore how to overcome these challenges through simplified algorithms, appropriate information disclosure, and high-level collaboration, thereby offering future research direction for building AI systems that are trustworthy and understandable to users.
