  • Critically ill neonates displayed stable vital parameters and reduced metabolic acidosis during neonatal emergency airborne transport in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : WILEY. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 107:8, s. 1357-1361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: This study evaluated the medical quality of acute airborne transports carried out by a neonatal emergency transport service in a Swedish healthcare region from 2012 to 2015. Methods: The transport charts and patient records of all infants transported to the regional centre were reviewed for transport indications and vital parameters and outcomes. Results: We identified 187 acute airborne transports and the main indications for referral were therapeutic hypothermia after perinatal asphyxia, extremely preterm birth and respiratory failure. There were 37 deaths, but none of these occurred during transport and none of the deaths that occurred within 24 hours after transport were found to be related to the transport per se. No differences were found in vital parameters or ventilator settings before and after transport, except for an improvement in blood pH (7.22 +/- 0.13 versus 7.27 +/- 0.13, mean +/- SD, p < 0.01), due to a decrease in base deficit (-8.0 +/- 6.8 versus -5.4 +/- 6.3 mmol, p < 0.001), while the partial pressure of carbon dioxide remained unchanged. Conclusion: During air transport, critically ill neonates displayed stable vital parameters and reduced metabolic acidosis. No transport-related mortality was found, but the high number of extremely preterm infants transported indicates the potential for improving in-utero transport.

  • Digital micromirror devices in Raman trace detection of explosives
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Detection and Sensing of Mines, Explosive Objects, and Obscured Targets XXI. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9781510600645
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Imaging Raman spectroscopy based on tunable filters is an established technique for detecting single explosives particles at stand-off distances. However, large light losses are inherent in the design due to sequential imaging at different wavelengths, leading to effective transmission often well below 1 %. The use of digital micromirror devices (DMD) and compressive sensing (CS) in imaging Raman explosives trace detection can improve light throughput and add significant flexibility compared to existing systems. DMDs are based on mature microelectronics technology, and are compact, scalable, and can be customized for specific tasks, including new functions not available with current technologies. This paper has been focusing on investigating how a DMD can be used when applying CS-based imaging Raman spectroscopy on stand-off explosives trace detection, and evaluating the performance in terms of light throughput, image reconstruction ability and potential detection limits. This type of setup also gives the possibility to combine imaging Raman with non-spatially resolved fluorescence suppression techniques, such as Kerr gating. The system used consists of a 2nd harmonics Nd:YAG laser for sample excitation, collection optics, DMD, CMOS-camera and a spectrometer with ICCD camera for signal gating and detection. Initial results for compressive sensing imaging Raman shows a stable reconstruction procedure even at low signals and in presence of interfering background signal. It is also shown to give increased effective light transmission without sacrificing molecular specificity or area coverage compared to filter based imaging Raman. At the same time it adds flexibility so the setup can be customized for new functionality.

  • Analysis of WC grain growth during sintering using electron backscatter diffraction and image analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International journal of refractory metals & hard materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-4368. ; 26:5, s. 449-455
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The WC carbide grain size is important for the technological properties of cemented carbide cutting tools. in the present work the WC carbide grain size distribution is determined after milling and sintering for 0.25, 1 and 8 h at 1430 degrees C. The WC grain size distribution, both for the powder after milling and the sintered specimens, is determined by two different methods, i.e. image analysis on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). It should be noted that in this work the 2D grain size distribution is considered. The EBSD analysis clearly shows that the special 12 boundaries are present in the powder and that their fraction decreases during sintering and particularly during the early stages. When the 12 boundaries are omitted in the EBSD analysis the results of the grain size measurements for the two methods agree quite well.

  • Body size mediates latitudinal population differences in response to Bd infection in two amphibian species
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is a generalist pathogen which has caused amphibian population declines worldwide. In many species Bd infection causes the disease chytridiomycosis, leading to high mortality. However, infection may cause sub-lethal fitness effects even in species that are resistant or tolerant to Bd. Moreover, populations of the same species may differ in their sensitivity to Bd, but the factors behind this variation are poorly understood. Here we exposed two common North European amphibians (moor frog Rana arvalis, common toad Bufo bufo) from two latitudinally divergent regions to two different BdGPL strains in a laboratory experiment. We found that Bd exposure lowered survival in both species, but this effect was much stronger in B. bufo.  Moreover, survival was lower in the northern region in both species, this difference again being much stronger in B. bufo. Northern individuals were smaller in both species and the survival difference between regions was size mediated with smaller individuals being more sensitive to Bd. We discuss potential additional factors contributing to this result. Bd exposure also led to sub-lethal effects in terms of reduced growth in both species suggesting that even individuals surviving the infection may have reduced fitness mediated by reduction if body size. However, we did not detect any differences in amphibian responses to the two Bd strains.

  • Body size mediates latitudinal population differences in the response to chytrid fungus infection in two amphibians
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Oecologia. - 0029-8549 .- 1432-1939. ; 204:1, s. 71-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Factors behind intraspecific variation in sensitivity to pathogens remain poorly understood. We investigated how geographical origin in two North European amphibians affects tolerance to infection by the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a generalist pathogen which has caused amphibian population declines worldwide. We exposed newly metamorphosed individuals of moor frog Rana arvalis and common toad Bufo bufo from two latitudinal regions to two different BdGPL strains. We measured survival and growth as infections may cause sub-lethal effects in fitness components even in the absence of mortality. Infection loads were higher in B. bufo than in R. arvalis, and smaller individuals had generally higher infection loads. B. bufo had high mortality in response to Bd infection, whereas there was little mortality in R. arvalis. Bd-mediated mortality was size-dependent and high-latitude individuals were smaller leading to high mortality in the northern B. bufo. Bd exposure led to sub-lethal effects in terms of reduced growth suggesting that individuals surviving the infection may have reduced fitness mediated by smaller body size. In both host species, the Swedish Bd strain caused stronger sublethal effects than the British strain. We suggest that high-latitude populations can be more vulnerable to chytrids than those from lower latitudes and discuss the possible mechanisms how body size and host geographical origin contribute to the present results.
