  • Animal Places : Lively Cartographies of Human Animal Relations
  • 2017
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonhuman animals are ubiquitous to our `human' societies. Interdisciplinary human/animal research has - for 50 years - drawn attention to how animals are ever-present in what we think of as human spaces and cultures. Our societies are built with animals and through all kinds of multispecies interactions. From public spaces and laboratories to homes, farms and in the `wilderness'; human and nonhuman animals meet to make space and place together, through webs of power relations. However, the very spaces of these interactions are not mute or passive themselves. The spaces where species meet matter, and shape human/animal relations. This book takes as its starting point the relationship between place and human/animal interaction. It brings together the work of leading scholars in human/animal studies, from a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary backgrounds. With a distinct focus on place, physical space and biocultural geography, the authors of this volume consider the ways in which space, human and nonhuman animals co-constitute each other, how they make spaces together, produce meaning around them, struggle over access, how these places are storied and how stories of spaces matter. Presenting studies thematically and including a variety of nonhuman creatures in a range of settings, this book delivers new understandings of the importance of nonhuman animals to understandings of place - and the role of places in shaping our interactions with nonhuman creatures. As pets, as laboratory animals, as exhibits, as parasites, as livestock, as quarry, as victims of disaster or objects of folklore, this book offers insights into human/animal intermingling at locales and settings of great relevance to many areas of research, including geography, sociology, science and technology studies, gender studies, history and anthropology. This book meets the evolving interest in human/animal interaction, anthrozoology, and the environmental humanities in relation to the research on space and place that currently informs the humanities and the social sciences.

  • On Men and Cars : An Ethnographic Study of Gendered, Risky and Dangerous Relations
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It is well known that young men constitute a high-risk group in terms of accidents involving both themselves and others. But comparatively little is known about the roles of gender, masculinity and automobility in reproducing or subverting such particularly risky performances of identity. The study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of how gender, primarily masculinity, is interrelated with car-related identities, practices and material constructions. Contributing with qualitative insights, this study explores the ways in which gendered individuals and cars co-constitute one another in a particular context, the community of Swedish car modifiers. By using an ethnographic approach, this thesis investigates the lives of young and middle-aged car enthusiasts who invest considerable time, money, skill and passion in modifying, showing and driving their cars. The material stems from fieldwork carried out at car shows, in cars, on online modified-car forums and in garages between 2006 and 2008. In total, 53 men and 14 women between the ages of 19 and 60 make up the informants. The study shows how gender, in particular masculinity, is reproduced and negotiated in the modifiers’ attempts to become “unique” subjects through making their own versions of the car. Cars are not only a means of self-expression and constructing identity, but serve to build community and regulate relations between, primarily, men through competition at car shows and when driving. The study examines the reproduction of craftsmanship as a purified ideal that distinguishes car modifiers as a “special kind” of men, a figure that takes its form through intersecting imaginaries of Swedishness, class and masculinity. To rely on one’s own ideas and hands represented a more authentic way of creating one’s dream car in a heavily commercialised culture. Constructions of masculinity in driving are explored in its profoundly embodied, emotional and dangerous aspects developed in the context of men, cars and risk-taking. The personalised car is shown to generate different forms of risk-taking, which are also productive of counter-discourses on dangerous and risky driving.

  • Bodies of the Now : Stockholm Festival for Art and Technology: Visions of the NOW, (pp. 1 - 24). Stockholm, Sweden: Visions of the Now.
  • 2013
  • Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Initiated by Swedish artist Anna Lundh, Visions of the Now is a reconsideration of the 1966 Stockholm festival Visioner av Nuet (Visions of the Present), which aimed to examine the impact of technology on humanity, society, and art; half a century later, we are immersed in the technology that was still “new” in 1966. Lundh's project took place in 2013 and brought together international artists, musicians, theorists, and scientists for a three-day festival of lectures, panels, performances, sound pieces, installations, and screenings. What, it asked, are our current visions of the now, and how do we imagine the future? This two-volume set marks the fiftieth anniversary of Visioner av Nuet and contains the catalogue and proceedings of the 2013 festival, new contributions by the invitees, and photo documentation. Archival material from the 1966 festival, with never-before-published correspondence with John Cage and Buckminster Fuller and texts by Alvin Lucier and Nam June Paik, is featured along with the connected history of the 1966 New York festival, 9 Evenings of Theatre and Engineering.Contributors Katja Aglert, Cecilia Åsberg, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Rosi Braidotti, Tyler Coburn, Brian Droitcour, Mathew Dryhurst, Katarina Elvén, Luke Fischbeck (Lucky Dragons), Jacob Gaboury, Jennifer A. • Toxic Embodiment and Feminist Environmental Humanities : Toxic Embodiment and Feminist Environmental Humanities
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Environmental Humanities. - : Duke University Press. - 2201-1919. ; 11:1, s. 101-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With toxic pollutants as a rising threat, important questions about environmental justice, gender, and the sexual politics of environmental movements issue an urgent challenge to intersectional gender and science studies; to anticolonial, queer, and trans theory; as well as to environmental and human-animal studies at large. Taking up this challenge, this piece aims at attending to the ways toxic embodiment disturbs or aligns with multiple boundaries of sexes, generations, races, geographies, nation-states, and species and how toxicity has re-dynamized corporeality and the biochemical materiality of bodies.

  • Debates in Nordic Gender Studies : Differences Within
  • 2015. - 2
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Celebrating more than two decades of feminist theory and gender research, this book provides an essential overview of current theoretical positions, hot topics and state-of-the-art perspectives in the field of Nordic Gender Studies: an area currently facing the challenges of internationalization and destabilized well fare states, intersectionality, materiality, and academic transformation.Forming an overview, the introductory texts collected here are intended for Nordic and international students and teachers specializing in gender studies or related areas of interdisciplinary humanities and social sciences. With vibrant contributions from Nordic and international key scholars, think pieces and position papers culled from NORA: Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research, are in fact essential reading for anyone in need of accessible yet condensed guidance on key discussion points, such as post-constructionism and new materialism, neo-liberal academia and interdisciplinarity, and the role of critical gender theory and posthumanism. The volume also looks at the differences within Nordic Gender Studies of today. This book is made up of material that was previously published in various issues of NORA: Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research.
