  • A Web-Enabled Visualization Toolkit for Geovisual Analytics
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Information Visualization. - : Sage Publications. - 1473-8716 .- 1473-8724. ; 11:1, s. 22-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A framework and class library (GAV Flash) implemented in Adobe’s ActionScript is introduced, designed with the intention to significantly shorten the time and effort needed to develop customized web-enabled applications for geovisual analytics tasks. Through an atomic layered component architecture, GAV Flash provides a collection of interactive geo- and information visualization representations for exploring high dimensional spaces and extended with motion behavior. Versatile interaction methods are drawn from many data visualization research areas and optimized for dynamic web visualization of spatio-temporal and multivariate data. Based on layered component thinking and the use of programming interface mechanism the GAV Flash architecture is open and facilitates the creation of new or improved versions of existing components so that ideas can be tried out or optimized rapidly in a fully functional environment. Not only is GAV Flash a tool for interactive visualization but also supports storytelling around visual analytics in which visual representations not only serve as a discovery tool for individuals but also as a mean to share stories among users fostering a social style of collaborative data analysis. A mechanism “snapshot” for saving the explorative results of a reasoning process is introduced that aids collaboration and publication of gained insight and knowledge embedded as dynamic visualizations in blogs or web pages with associative metadata or “storytelling”.

    • We introduce a framework and class library (GAV Flash) implemented in Adobe’s ActionScript, designed with the intention to significantly shorten the time and effort needed to develop customized web-enabled applications for visual analytics or geovisual analytics tasks. Through an atomic layered component architecture, GAV Flash provides a collection of common geo- and information visualization representations extended with motion behavior including scatter matrix, extended parallel coordinates, table lens, choropleth map and treemap, integrated in a multiple, time-linked layout. Following the Visual Analytics mantra, a mechanism “snapshot” for saving the explorative results of a reasoning process is developed that aids collaboration and publication of gained insight and knowledge embedded as dynamic visualizations in blogs or web pages with associative metadata or “storytelling”.

  • Geovisual Analytics for Self-Organizing Network Data
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IEEE Symposium on Visual Analytics Science and Technology, 2009 (VAST 2009. - 445 Hoes Lane, P.O. Box 1331, Piscataway, NJ 08855-1331 USA : IEEE Service Center. - 9781424452835 ; , s. 43-50

    • Cellular radio networks are continually growing in both node count and complexity. It therefore becomes more difficult to manage the networks and necessary to use time and cost effective automatic algorithms to organize the network’s neighbor cell relations. There have been a number of attempts to develop such automatic algorithms. Network operators, however, may not trust them because they need to have an understanding of their behavior and of their reliability and performance, which is not easily perceived. This paper presents a novel web-enabled geovisual analytics approach to exploration and understanding of self-organizing network data related to cells and neighbor cell relations. A demonstrator and case study are presented in this paper, developed in close collaboration with the Swedish telecom company Ericsson and based on large multivariate, time-varying and geospatial data provided by the company. It allows the operators to follow, interact with and analyze the evolution of a self-organizing network and enhance their understanding of how an automatic algorithm configures locally-unique physical cell identities and organizes neighbor cell relations of the network. The geovisual analytics tool is tested with a self-organizing network that is operated by the Automatic Neighbor Relations (ANR) algorithm. The demonstrator has been tested with positive results by a group of domain experts from Ericsson and will be tested in production.

  • Implementation of a Flow Map Demonstrator for Analyzing Commuting and Migration Flow Statistics Data
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences. - : Elsevier. - 1877-0428. ; 21, s. 157-166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interest for statistics visualization is emerging with the rise of geovisual analytics on the internet. National and sub-national statistics foundations have started to migrate from tabular representations to interactive web-enabled visualizations that can show trends. Interactive web-enable visualizations for movement data (or flow data) such as trade flows or commuting flows, however, are still rare. This paper covers spatial interactions and animation for a wide variety of realized movements of people such as commuting and migration between an origin and a destination visually expressed by directed weighted arrows over a geographic space. The paper is built around an interactive flow map demonstrator that can interactively explore and communicate large spatio-temporal and multivariate statistical flow datasets using bidirectional flow arrows where both in-coming and out-going flows can be clearly shown coordinated and linked with a choropleth map, histogram or parallel coordinates plot. The demonstrator is implemented with low-level components from our geovisual analytics toolkit GAV Flash designed with the intention to shorten the time and effort needed to develop customized web-enabled interactive visualization applications such as the introduced flow map application.

  • Visualization of Self-Organizing NetworksOperated by the ANR Algorithm
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2009 IEEE-RIVF International Conference on Computing and Communication Technologies. - Piscataway, NJ, USA : IEEE. - 9781424445660 - 9781424445684 ; , s. 312-319
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cellular radio networks are continually growing in both node count and complexity. It therefore becomes more and more difficult to manage the networks and necessary to use time and cost effective automatic computer algorithms to organize the network’s neighbor cell relations. Ericsson has developed such an algorithm, called Automatic Neighbor Relations (ANR), which solves a part of this problem by automatically creating and updating neighbor cell relation (NCR) lists, based on measured network data. Network operators need to have an understanding of the algorithm and of its reliability and performance, which is not easily perceived. This paper presents a visualization tool that visualizes the performance of ANR and gives the user a possibility to control it via policies. The tool allows the operators to follow the evolution of the network and to find problems occurring over time. In addition, it also supports finding potential problems that can occur in the future. The tool was evaluated by a group of relevant domain users and the results from the evaluation were highly positive.

  • GeoAnalytics Tools Applied to Large Geospatial Datasets
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Information Visualisation, 2008. IV '08. 12th International Conference. - Los Alamitos, CA, USA : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769532684 ; , s. 362-372
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Geovisual analytics focuses on finding location-related patterns and relationship. Many approaches exist but generally do not scale well with large spatial datasets. We propose three enhancements that facilitate scalable geovisual analytics of voluminous geospatial data based on geographic mapping coordinated and linked with parallel coordinates (PC): 1) texture-based geographic mapping that exploits GPU-based rendering performance applied to overview + detail views, 2) statistical methods embedded in PC, 3) aggregated dynamic grid maps that integrate with PC. In this context, we have extended our previous introduced psilaGeoAnalyticspsila Visualization (GAV) framework and class library with a novel implementation of the standard PC using an atomic layered component architecture that allows new ideas to be implemented and assessed without having to rewrite a complete functional PC component. We demonstrate our proposed enhancements applied to a large geospatial dataset containing more than 10,000 Swedish zip (postal) code regions described by more than three million (X, Y) boundary coordinates and includes many associated demographics and statistical attributes.

  • Visual Analytics Presentation Tools applied in HTML Documents
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Information Visualisation, 2008. IV '08. 12th International Conference. - Los Alamitos, CA, USA : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769532684 ; , s. 200-207
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present novel means to communicate and present gained knowledge using semi-guided interactive visualizations embedded in standard HTML documents. The goal of the work is to let the analyst (author) explore data and simultaneously save important discoveries and thus enable collaboration and sharing of gained insights over the Internet. The readers of the document will benefit from receiving an integrated and interactive document that can "coach" them in the understanding and testing of hypotheses leading to faster understanding and a higher confidence level in the presented visual information. The approach is based on the visual analytics (VA) toolkit (GAV), which also provides a mechanism that supports the storage of interactive events in an analytical reasoning process through "memorized interactive visualization views" or snapshots that can be saved at any time during an explorative data analysis process. In a typical scenario an application, comprised of GAV VA components, is embedded in the HTML document together with target data and the snapshots of discoveries. Any standard HTML event, such as the user clicking a textual link or an image can be used to instantiate a snapshot, creating a link between a descriptive text and an interactive visualization presentation. As the GAV application and corresponding data are integrated with the HTML code, residing on the client machine, hardware accelerated graphics can be used to provide interactive performance of demanding visualizations. We demonstrate the potential of the developed methods in the context of geoanalytics and molecular visualization scenarios.
