  • Methodologies for tracking learning paths: designing the on-line research study Making a Filmmaker
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: MedieKultur. - Aalborg : Sammenslutningen af Medieforskere i Danmark. - 0900-9671 .- 1901-9726. ; 46, s. 73-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article concerns the design of a collaborative research project (2008-09) entitled Making a Filmmaker, which examines how young Scandinavian filmmakers create their own learning paths in formal and/or informal contexts. Our interest is in how learning experiences and contexts motivate the young filmmakers: what furthers their interest and/or hinders it, and what learning patterns emerge. The aim of this article is to present and discuss issues regarding the methodology and methods of the study, such as developing a relationship with interviewees when conducting interviews online (using MSN). We suggest two considerations about using online interviews: how the interviewees value the given subject of conversation and their familiarity with being online. The benefit of getting online communication with the young filmmakers is the ease it offers, because it is both practical and appropriates a meeting platform that is familiar to our participants.

  • Interests in motion : The film medium through the eyes and lenses of young Scandinavian filmmakers

  • Ingår i: International Perspectives on Youth Media. - New York : Peter Lang Publishing Group. - 9781433106538
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter examines youth media from a Scandinavian perspective, based on the results of a recent study about learning paths among young filmmakers in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. We deal specifically with how the film medium as a knowledge domain, or a field of practice, is represented through the discourses of young Scandinavian filmmakers. The chapter introduces three filmmakers and their submitted films. The analysis – which uses a social semiotic approach to communication and meaning making – is focused on their enclosed descriptions of a scene they felt satisfied with and their motivations for highlighting that specific scene. The aspects of the scene they point out are seen as representations of the film medium as a knowledge domain, based on certain assumptions about how the medium works and what can be regarded as marks of quality within the different aspects of filmmaking they focus on. As a background, a Scandinavian context for youth filmmaking is presented briefly.

  • Laddade bilder : Representation och meningsskapande i unga tjejers filmberättande

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall aim of this dissertation is to investigate how students engage with visual representations as a signifying practice in an educational context. This question is scrutinized through two young girls’ three video films and interviews with the producers. The study is guided by an interest in what these young students communicate with their films, how this is done and how they relate to the cultural and social world in their representation. The title, Ambiguous Images, alludes to the signifying work with film, images and words done by the two girls. The films raise topics such as sexuality, equality and gender which set their mark on the situation of young females, both in school and in their leisure time. The result shows that moving images fulfil the function of negotiating the significations as well as making it possible for the girls to create their own alternative representations. Each film contributes an alternative discourse, in contrast to dominant texts that apply to the constitution of the cultural and social context they address. The study demonstrates that learning is a process of selection, adaptation and transformation motivated by the interests of the pupils and the context of learning. Other important issues are also raised concerning the students’ possibilities to participate in and influence the school subject in question. This involves both the opportunity of engagement with a multiplicity of modes and the possibility to adopt their own voice and view of the world. Both the methodological and the theoretical approach in the dissertation have multimodal and social-semiotic perspectives, which are combined with a design approach. These combinations are united in a presentation of representation and communication as a social process of sign-making.
