  • Thinking the Human System : The Application of Humanities and Social Science Reasoning to Societal Problems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The Humanities and the Modern Politics of Knowledge : The Impact and Organization of the Humanities in Sweden, 1850-2020 - The Impact and Organization of the Humanities in Sweden, 1850-2020. - 9789463728867 - 9789048555024 ; , s. 207-230
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Between 1967 and 1972, Swedish futures studies emerged as a distinct political and intellectual endeavor. In this development, the humanities and social sciences played a special role, especially through the idea that human knowledge and knowledge about a “human system” could be brought to bear on societal problems and used to forge a new approach to the future. We focus here on two scholars, historian Birgitta Odén and geographer Torsten Hägerstrand, proposing that they were important f igures in developing a new engagement with problems of social and human time in Swedish social science and humanities research.

  • Outroduction. A research agenda on collegiality in university settings
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research in the Sociology of Organizations. - 0733-558X. ; , s. 187-211
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collegiality is the modus operandi of universities. Collegiality is central to academic freedom and scientific quality. In this way, collegiality also contributes to the good functioning of universities’ contribution to society and democracy. In this concluding paper of the special issue on collegiality, we summarize the main findings and takeaways from our collective studies. We summarize the main challenges and contestations to collegiality and to universities, but also document lines of resistance, activation, and maintenance. We depict varieties of collegiality and conclude by emphasizing that future research needs to be based on an appreciation of this variation. We argue that it is essential to incorporate such a variation-sensitive perspective into discussions on academic freedom and scientific quality and highlight themes surfaced by the different studies that remain under-explored in extant literature: institutional trust, field-level studies of collegiality, and collegiality and communication. Finally, we offer some remarks on methodological and theoretical implications of this research and conclude by summarizing our research agenda in a list of themes.

  • Introduction : Politics of Knowledge and the Modern History of the Humanities
  • 2022. - 1
  • Ingår i: The Humanities and the Modern Politics of Knowledge. - : Amsterdam University Press. - 9789463728867 - 9789048555024 ; , s. 7-35
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The history of the humanities needs to move beyond the focus on tra-ditional disciplines and historicize notions regarding the impact andorganization of the humanities in a long historical perspective. The presentedited volume, based on case studies of Sweden in the modern period, provides an important contribution to such an endeavor. This introductionproposes an analytical framework by special reference to “knowledgepolitics,” a concept that allows a flexible and aggregated examination ofhow societies have valued and politicized the organization, balancing, and circulation of knowledge on a broad scale. The national case in pointprovides illuminating insights into how the humanities over time had torelate to various regimes of legitimacy and enables comparisons on aninternational scale.

  • Futures of the History of the Humanities : An Introduction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: History of Humanities. - : University of Chicago Press. - 2379-3163 .- 2379-3171. ; 8:2, s. 177-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last decade, scholarly attention has turned to the humanities’ collective past with renewed energy and sense of purpose. As a result, a new field of research, the history of the humanities, has crystalized and received broad international attention. In this forum, we take a special interest in the question of where the history of the humanities is heading. And where do we want it to go? In order to fuel discussion, six scholars have been invited to contribute their perspectives on what the future holds for the field. In our introduction, we frame these contributions by outlining the origins, current state, and potential trajectories of the new (or possibly reformed) field of research. Summarizing the ambitions of the field as well as its transdisciplinary links and influences, we reflect on why it has emerged as well as consider the larger implications for the humanities as a whole. It is argued that although the full potential of the history of the humanities is far from being reached, the very concept has functioned as an integrative platform, opening up new lines of inquiry within a larger framework. Nevertheless, as the contributions to this forum collectively make evident, there are also a number of challenges that the history of the humanities will face going forward.

  • Measuring Up to the Humanities : Navigating the Epistemological Advantage of Classical Humanism in Nineteenth-Century Scholarly Periodicals
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The Humanities and the Modern Politics of Knowledge : The Impact and Organization of the Humanities in Sweden, 1850-2020 - The Impact and Organization of the Humanities in Sweden, 1850-2020. - : Amsterdam University Press. - 9789463728867 - 9789048555024 ; , s. 39-59
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter analyzes the epistemological hierarchy around the middleof the nineteenth century in Sweden through efforts to mobilize supportfor natural science in scholarly periodicals. It is argued that scholarlycommunication was key to achieving legitimacy for natural science, butthat such efforts were mitigated by a dominant view of the humanitiesin general and classical humanism in particular as more valuable tosociety. Tensions between natural science and classical humanism wereexpressed in negotiations of the nebulous concept of bildning – the Swedishequivalent of the German Bildung – and the article demonstrates hownatural scientists tried to navigate its semantic usage and advocate theview that natural science could achieve the educational goals associatedwith classical humanism.

  • Unity lost : Negotiating the ancient roots of Pedagogy in Sweden, 1865–1971
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: History of Education Review. - : Emerald. - 0819-8691 .- 2054-5649. ; 51:2, s. 137-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this article is to investigate attempts to safeguard classical humanism in secondary schools by appealing to a cultural-historical link with Antiquity, voiced in the face of educational reforms in Sweden between 1865 and 1971.Design/methodology/approach – By focusing on the content of the pedagogical journal Pedagogisk Tidskrift, the article highlights a number of examples of how an ancient historical lineage was evoked and how historical knowledge was mobilized and contested in various ways.Findings – The article argues that the enduring negotiation over the educational need to maintain a strong link with the ancient past was strained due to increasing scholarly specialization and thus entangled in competing views on reform and what was deemed “traditional” or “modern”.Originality/value – From a larger perspective, the conflict over the role of Antiquity in Swedish secondary schools reveals a trajectory for the history of education as part of and later apart from a general history of the humanities. Classical history originally served as a common past from which Swedish culture and education developed, but later lost this integrating function within the burgeoning discipline of Pedagogy. The findings demonstrate the value of bringing the newly (re)formed history of humanities and history of education closer together.

  • The Humanities and the Modern Politics of Knowledge : The Impact and Organization of the Humanities in Sweden, 1850–2020
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book addresses the shifting status of the humanities through a national case study spanning two centuries. The societal function of the humanities is considered from the flexible perspective of knowledge politics in order to historicize notions of impact and intellectual organization that tend to be taken for granted. The focus on modern Sweden enables an extended but still empirically coherent historical analysis, inviting critical comparisons with the growing literature on the history of the humanities from around the world. In the Swedish case, the humanities were instrumental to the construction of modern societal institutions, political movements, and professional education in the second half of the 19th century, while in the 20th century, the sense of future-making shifted towards science and medicine, and later technology and economy. The very rationale of the humanities was thus put under pressure as their social contract required novel negotiations. Their state and connections to society were nevertheless of a complex and ambiguous character, as is demonstrated by this volume whose contributions explore the many faces and places of the modern humanities.
