  • Look, a ToSsphere! : Behind the checkbox of Terms of Service
  • 2023
  • Konstnärligt arbeteabstract
    • In this project, I attempt to go behind the checkbox and unpack what is it that we agree on when we check ‘I have read and agree on ToS’ boxes. By engaging with ToS at different scales – zooming in and out – through reading, translating, and transposing, I explore what each mode of engagement reveals, what questions they lead to, and how these explorations could inform designers.

  • Making a case for mapping a ToSsphere
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Relating Systems Thinking and Design, RSD12. - : Systemic Design Association.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Terms of Service agreements now govern the ongoing relations between users and digital technologies. However, with their text-based medium preferring complex and lengthy technical and legal jargon, they have demonstrated to be failing in obtaining informed consent. While they have been approached from a perspective of usability in human-computer interaction, in this exhibit, we attempt to introduce a different scale. We start by reading a Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Then, we translate our repetitive readings into a relational mapping, which we later transpose into a spatial mapping. These mappings not only make visible actors and relations that constitute the complex policy ecosystems that we call ToSspheres, but also serve as entry points to understanding and intervening into these policy ecosystems.

  • Does Terms of Service Care?
  • 2024
  • Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Once upon a time, it was a thing to choose with care what one would own. It used to be an investment of one’s time and money. In time, things and how we relate to them have changed with the introduction of smart phones and apps. Now, we have ongoing relations with these things that often start with a simple lie: ‘I have read and agree on the Terms of Service’. In our defense, Terms of Service (ToS) is not a good read; too long, complex, and boring. It is not that we don’t care but we just can’t. It is more like it is ToS that doesn’t care if we read it or not! This installation looks at ToS and reads it like a map in an attempt to trace care asking ‘Who does the ToS care about and for?’. The installation showcases a video of a spatial mapping exploration done in an urban forest in Umeå. Taking a femtech application’s Terms of Service ecosystem, ToSsphere, as a site for inquiry, the installation looks at who is present, who is absent, who is cared for and who is not. These questions and revelations printed on ToS documents form the backdrop of the video. Shot in juxtaposition to nature, the video highlights how natural resources essential in sustaining digital things, are absent in ToSspheres. As we move fast towards an every day we can’t imagine without generative AI despite its impact on the planet, the installation welcomes a pause to think with care our digital footprint. The installation carried out as an artistic research practice in design at Umeå Institute of Design and DCODE Network, opens pathways for design to engage with democratic data governance for designing new eco-social contacts that care for our more-than-human planet.

  • Destabilizing the quotidian : urban recipes for cultivating care in the more-than-human city
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordes 2023.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores how everyday practices can be an inspiration for novel designerly ways of relating to others and cultivating care in response to the prevalent lack of care in our precarious world. We present Urban Recipes, an ongoing project that combines the spatial exploration of drifting with the recursive practice of recipe-making, opening up a space for new ways of relating to the more-than-human urban environments that are home to both humans and nonhumans. Applying the metaphors of cooking to this paper, we trace the evolution of the project, starting from the recipe and developing it into the cookbook and the test kitchen. Finally, as we gather our reflections at the table, we meditate on how the transformation of the personal, the destabilization of the quotidian, and the creation of the joyful through Urban Recipes facilitate a new way of noticing and caring.

  • Urban Recipes : Test Kitchen No1
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Urban Recipes is an ongoing research project that combines the spatial exploration of drifting with the recursive practice of recipe making, opening up a space for novel ways of relating to both humans and nonhumans in everyday urban environments. The workshop at Design United will take the form of a test kitchen, where participants are invited to make, exchange, and recreate recipes for exploring Eindhoven and noticing its rich ecologies through actions, observations, and associations. Participants will be provided with cookbooks that offer instructions and space to make their own recipes and record their observations and reflections. This playful exercise, connecting the personal to the ecological, aims to inspire participants to find new ways of relating to the more-than-human in the contemporary city landscape. The workshop will last for 75 minutes, a maximum of 20 participants are welcome.

  • Urban Recipes: Malmö Picnic : a more-than-human care workshop
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Southern Sweden Design Days.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban Recipes is a playful exploration of rich ecologies in the city. By combining the spatial experimentation of drifting with the recursive practice of recipe making, Urban Recipes opens up a space for novel ways of noticing and relating to both humans and nonhumans in everyday urban environments. Urban Recipes: Malmö Picnic invites curious individuals to take a stroll in the industrial area of Västra Hamnen, create, exchange, and remake recipes for noticing fellow nonhuman inhabitants. Collectively, we will reflect on how to cultivate care in the more-than-human city.

  • Sensing in the wild : a DCODE DRS lab exploring a more-than-human approach to distributed urban sensing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: DRS2022: Bilbao. - Bilbao : Design Research Society. - 9781912294572
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Sensing in the Wild Lab is a speculative experiment in designing a de- centralised urban sensing system from a more-than-human perspective. It is part of DCODE, an H2020-ITN project that explores the future of designing with AI. During the Lab participants assume different identities – roleplaying as children but also as moss, as municipal authorities, as CCTV cameras, as pigeons, and as undocumented immigrants trying to evade the authorities – and are asked to feed into the sensing system data that reflects their particular perspectives and interests. The data partici- pants share, in the form of an image and text uploaded to a dedicated WhatsApp channel, helps to reveal both frictions and alignments among actors. In this, the Lab offers municipalities an opportunity to shift their thinking about the future smart city from a “system of systems” that is optimised for a few city dwellers to a much more distributed, inclusive meshwork in which data is contributed, circulated, and negoti- ated by humans and nonhumans alike.

  • Uncommon crowd : sensing in the wild from more-than-human perspectives workshop
  • 2022
  • Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Have you ever considered yourself to be a part of a sensing system? In this workshop, participants engage with Live Action Roleplay (LARP) and auto-ethnographic and fictional modes of design inquiry. From the perspective of different human and non-human agents, players who participate in the workshop examine how urban sensing systems write themselves into cities and, in turn, how cities write themselves into sensing systems—and by doing so, shape civic futures.

  • Filling in the blanks : rethinking Terms of Service (ToS) through design
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Terms of Service (ToS) have proven to be a problematic touchpoint for regulating the ongoing relationships with networked computational things. As research into improving their usability demonstrates insignificant gains in engagement and comprehensibility, employing an approach going beyond an understanding of ToS as 2D interface becomes inevitable. In this paper, highlighting these problems, I problematize ToS for design by zooming in to and out of ToS through lenses of (auto)ethnography, programmatic research, and entanglement theories. Three practices emerge from this movement and make up my research program, aesthetics of relating: releasing design for Terms of Trauma, revealing design for Terms of Entanglement, and reimagining design for Terms of Care. With these explorations I introduce a conceptual shift from ToS to ToS ecosystem – ToSsphere, and theoretical and methodological shifts from human-centered to more-than-human design. I conclude by mentioning my plans to achieve this research program and the expected contributions.
