    • Mice lacking both WASP and N-WASP in B lymphocytes have impaired response to T-cell-dependent antigens and defective B-cell activation. Deletion of N-WASP in B cells attenuates autoimmunity in WASP-deficient mice.

  • Two steps forward, two steps back : The role of innovation in transforming towards community-based marine resource management in Solomon Islands
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Global Environmental Change. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-3780 .- 1872-9495. ; 28, s. 309-321

    • In many coastal nations, community-based arrangements for marine resource management (CBRM) are promoted by government, advocated for by non-government actors, and are seen by both as one of the most promising options to achieve sustainable use and secure inshore fisheries and aquatic resources. Although there is an abundant literature on what makes CBRM effective, is it less clear how CBRM is introduced or develops as an idea in a community, and the process of how the idea leads to the adoption of a new resource management approach with supporting institutions. Here we aim to address this gap by applying an explicit process-based approach drawing on innovation history methodology by mapping and analysing the initiation and emergence of CBRM in five fishing-dependent communities in Solomon Islands. We use insights from the literatures on diffusion of innovation and transformability to define phases of the process and help guide the inductive analysis of qualitative data. We show the CBRM institutionalisation processes were non-linear, required specific strategies to move from one phase to the next, and key elements facilitated or hindered movement. Building active support for CBRM within communities depended on the types of events that happened at the beginning of the process and actions taken to sustain this. Matching CBRM to known resource management ideas or other social problems in the community, developing legitimate institutions and decision-making processes, strong continual interactions between key actors and the rest of the community (not necessarily NGO actors), and community members witnessing benefits of CBRM, all contributed to the emergence and diffusion of CBRM in the communities, and helped to overcome barriers to transformative change.

    • The reactions of [M(η3-C3H5)Br(CO)2(NCMe)2] (M = Mo, W) or [Mo(η3-C3H5)Br(CO)2(PMe2Ph)2] with Na[H2B(mt)2] (mt = methimazolyl) affords the complexes [M(η3-C3H5)(CO)2{κ3-H,S,S′-H2B(mt)2}], the 3-centre, 2-electron B-H-M interaction of which was found to be inert with respect to opening under mild conditions, while more forcing conditions (heating with PMe2Ph) resulted in cleavage of the entire allyl and borate ligands to form [Mo(CO)3(PMe2Ph)3]. In contrast, the reaction of [Mo(η3-C3H5)Br(CO)2(NCMe)2] with Na[H2B(pz)2] affords either [Mo(η3-C3H5)(CO)2{κ3-H,N,N′-H2B(pz)2}] or (more likely) [Mo(η3-C3H5)(CO)2(NCMe){κ2-N,N′-H2B(pz)2}] which in turn reacts with phosphines to provide [[Mo(η3-C3H5)(CO)2(PPhR2){κ2-N,N′-H2B(pz)2}] (R = Me, Ph). The reactions discussed indicate the propensity for 3-centre, 2-electron B-H-Mo interactions increases in the order H2B(pz)2 < H2B(pz∗)2 < H2B(mt)2 (pz∗ = 3,5-dimethypyrazolyl).

  • Can diet niche partitioning enhance sexual dimorphism?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Evolution. - : Wiley. - 2045-7758. ; 12:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Classic evolutionary theory suggests that sexual dimorphism evolves primarily via sexual and fecundity selection. However, theory and evidence are beginning to accumulate suggesting that resource competition can drive the evolution of sexual dimorphism, via ecological character displacement between sexes. A key prediction of this hypothesis is that the extent of ecological divergence between sexes will be associated with the extent of sexual dimorphism. As the stable isotope ratios of animal tissues provide a quantitative measure of various aspects of ecology, we carried out a meta-analysis examining associations between the extent of isotopic divergence between sexes and the extent of body size dimorphism. Our models demonstrate that large amounts of between-study variation in isotopic (ecological) divergence between sexes is nonrandom and may be associated with the traits of study subjects. We, therefore, completed meta-regressions to examine whether the extent of isotopic divergence between sexes is associated with the extent of sexual size dimorphism. We found modest but significantly positive associations across species between size dimorphism and ecological differences between sexes, that increased in strength when the ecological opportunity for dietary divergence between sexes was greatest. Our results, therefore, provide further evidence that ecologically mediated selection, not directly related to reproduction, can contribute to the evolution of sexual dimorphism.
