  • Investigating the current environmental situation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region during the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic : urban vs. rural context
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - : Springer Nature. - 1471-2458. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundCoronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to a massive global socio-economic tragedy that has impacted the ecosystem. This paper aims to contextualize urban and rural environmental situations during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region.ResultsAn online survey was conducted, 6770 participants were included in the final analysis, and 64% were females. The majority of the participants were urban citizens (74%). Over 50% of the urban residents significantly (p < 0.001) reported a reduction in noise, gathering in tourist areas, and gathering in malls and restaurants. Concerning the pollutants, most urban and rural areas have reported an increase in masks thrown in streets (69.49% vs. 73.22%, resp.; p = 0.003). Plastic bags and hospital waste also increased significantly with the same p-value of < 0.001 in urban areas compared with rural ones. The multifactorial logistic model for urban resident predictors achieved acceptable discrimination (AUROC = 0.633) according to age, crowdedness, noise and few pollutants.ConclusionThe COVID-19 pandemic had a beneficial impact on the environment and at the same time, various challenges regarding plastic and medical wastes are rising which requires environmental interventions.

  • Gelatin nanofibers : Recent insights in synthesis, bio-medical applications and limitations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Heliyon. - : Elsevier. - 2405-8440. ; 9:5
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of gelatin and gelatin-blend polymers as environmentally safe polymers to synthesis electrospun nanofibers, has caused a revolution in the biomedical field. The development of efficient nanofibers has played a significant role in drug delivery, and for use in advanced scaffolds in regenerative medicine. Gelatin is an exceptional biopolymer, which is highly versatile, despite variations in the processing technology. The electrospinning process is an efficient technique for the manufacture of gelatin electrospun nanofibers (GNFs), as it is simple, efficient, and cost-effective. GNFs have higher porosity with large surface area and biocompatibility, despite that there are some drawbacks. These drawbacks include rapid degradation, poor mechanical strength, and complete dissolution, which limits the use of gelatin electrospun nanofibers in this form for biomedicine. Thus, these fibers need to be cross-linked, in order to control its solubility. This modification caused an improvement in the biological properties of GNFs, which made them suitable candidates for various biomedical applications, such as wound healing, drug delivery, bone regeneration, tubular scaffolding, skin, nerve, kidney, and cardiac tissue engineering. In this review an outline of electrospinning is shown with critical summary of literature evaluated with respect to the various applications of nanofibers-derived gelatin.

  • Environmental risk, toxicity, and biodegradation of polyethylene : a review
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Pollution Research. - : Springer. - 0944-1344 .- 1614-7499. ; 29:54, s. 81166-81182
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polyethylene is the second-most-commonly-used commercial polymer. It is used in various industries, including agricultural mulches, composite materials, and packaging. Since polyethylene is not biodegradable, it can persist for a long time in water and soil, strangling otherwise fruitful land. The ecological and toxicological consequences and the fate of polyethylene have only recently been revealed. As a result, the primary goal of this review is to shed light on the reported toxicity of polyethylene to the environment and living creatures and highlight recent research on its degradation process through bibliometric analysis. To do that, we searched Web of Science database literature up to August 2021 and performed the bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer. We found that relative research interest showed a positive trend, particularly in the last 5 years. China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences had the highest published papers. Methods for polyethylene biodegradation by invertebrates, bacteria, and fungi were also reported indicating the need for future research to investigate and develop new biodegradation technologies.
