Like circles on the water : a study of adolescent identity

- This thesis explores the subject of identity development during late adolescence (16-20 years). Three questions were asked, each related to one domain of interest; a) how do adolescents perceive and describe themselves (adolescents' self-concept), b) what do they consider important in their lives (adolescents' existential questions), and, c) how do they describe their contacts with adult people (adolescents' contacts with adults)? The thesis includes three studies and uses a multimethodological approach, comprising interviews, a personality inventory, sentence-completion tasks and questionnaires.The results can be summarized as follows. The majority of the respondents had a positive view of themselves. An inconsistent self-concept was related to a number of negative factors. Existential questions mainly concerned one's personal future. Most respondents felt the need of adults in their lives, primarily due to adults' experience and knowledge.The main conclusions can be summarized in four points. First, identity development during late adolescence needs to be discussed in terms of processes of integration. This term emphasizes continuity and interaction, rather than autonomy and separation, terms that have dominated this field for a long time. Second, identity development during late adolescence can be illustrated by means of expanding circles. The centre is constituted by the adolescent's picture of her/himself (i.e., personal integration), whereas the periphery consists of the adolescent's picture of her /himself in relation to other people and society at large (i.e., social integration). Third, lack of personal integration at this age level signals an undesirable developmental process. Fourth, adolescent - adult interaction is one important factor in relation to social integration. Here the adolescent learns to develop her /his interactional skills in order to regulate and balance her /his own life space in relation to others'. However, the results also suggest that opportunities for social interaction between adolescents and adults outside their families are insufficient and need to be improved.

- This article outlines the Swedish national quality assurance system of higher education institutions, placing it in a historical and international context. Currently a new system is under construction as a result of heavy criticism of the system applied since 2011. What the new system will precisely confer is too early to tell. Its ambition is to align with the principles (European Standards and Guidelines; ESG 2015) that have been developed within the frame of the Bologna Process.

- Förord av Björn Brorström, Prorektor Högskolan i Borås Ett professionslärosäte bedriver utbildning och forskning på vetenskaplig grund. Vetenskapliga metoder tillämpas och framkomna resultat prövas för att säkra tillförlitlighet och relevans. Förmågan att problematisera, formulera frågor och välja lämpliga metoder för att besvara frågor är egenskaper för god forskning och utmärkande för en stark utbildnings- och forskningsmiljö. Vid ett professionslärosäte finns samtidigt en stark strävan efter att i utbildning och forskning ta till vara den kunskap och de erfarenheter som professioner besitter och därigenom säkra en hög grad av praktisk relevans. Växelverkan mellan teori och praktik och erfarenhetsutbyte mellan forskare och praktiker är ständigt pågående. Det finns ingen avslutning på processen utan den pågår utan avbrott. En nödvändig förutsättning för ett fruktbart samarbete är en ömsesidig respekt och vilja att stödja och ifrågasätta varandra. Forskaren måste vara beredd på kritik för bristen på praktisk relevans och professionsföreträdaren måste vara beredd på att förtrogenhetskunskapens lämplighet ifrågasätts. Det är en fråga om med- och mothåll från båda håll i syfte att långsiktigt utveckla teori och praktik. Det är en utmaning att utveckla, etablera och därefter kontinuerligt försvara och förbättra professionslärosätet. Ett led i utvecklingen är att inom ramen för Högskolan i Borås föra en debatt om innebörden av ett professionslärosäte och vad vi behöver göra för att förbättra verksamheten. På uppdrag av rektor Lena Nordholm har medarbetare vid Bibliotekshögskolan utvecklat och ansvarat för en seminarieserie benämnd Profession och vetenskap. Seminarierna spände över ett brett fält. En av många viktiga frågor som diskuterades flitigt var huruvida vi ska forska om professioner, i för eller med, eller kanske alltihop samtidigt. Bidragen publiceras nu i denna antologi som ges ut inom ramen för Högskolan i Borås rapportserie Vetenskap för profession. Rapporten Profession och vetenskap – idéer och strategier för ett professionslärosäte, som redigerats av universitetsadjunkt Maria Lindh, kommer att få stor betydelse inom lärosätet och i vårt samarbete med företrädare för näringsliv, kulturliv och offentlig verksamhet. Jag ser det som en intressant fortsättning att anordna ett antal seminarier med inbjudna representanter för professioner där artiklarna i denna rapport kan ligga till grund för erfarenhetsutbyte och diskussioner.

- Background: Effectiveness research is maturing as a field within intervention and prevention science. Effectiveness research involves the implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of the dissemination of evidence-based interventions in everyday circumstances (i.e., type 2 translational research). Effectiveness research is characterized by diverse types of research studies. Progress in this field has the potential to inform several debates within intervention science [e.g., fidelity versus local and cultural adaptation; identification of core components, effective dissemination systems). Objective: To provide illustrations from different countries (Ireland, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, New Zealand, and the United States) of how intervention science might raise the value of future effectiveness or type 2 translational research. Methods: Themes raised by individual articles and across articles are summarized and expanded on in this commentary. Results: Themes consist of raising awareness about the importance of effectiveness research on the cultural adaptation of evidence-based interventions and intervention support structures, as well as further development of strategies to bridge the gap between research and practice. Conclusions: Effectiveness research has an important role to play in affecting systemic change on a population level and allowing us to gain a realistic global understanding of the phenomena we hope to change through interventions. Articles in this special issue provide reports from social scientists and practitioners located in various parts of the world and offer a rich, diverse portrait of effectiveness research and theory development. The totality of the work contained in this special issue anticipates many of the changes that intervention and prevention science will undergo as we progress and develop effective dissemination strategies for evidence-based interventions that promote positive youth development and prevent youth and family problems on a global scale.
