  • Communication in global development projects: Objectives, mechanisms and interpretations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Organizational communication and sustainable Develoment - ICTs for mobility. - Hershey PA : IGI Global Publications. - 1605668222
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Globalization trends make the task of revisiting the nature of the organization of global development projects (GDPs) within MNCs imperative. In this study, GDPs are viewed as contemporary ventures that seek scale economies in response to opportunities and threats posed by globalization trends. Our focus is to obtain a better understanding of how communication is managed and organized in GDPs. The study is of a GDP with the aim of developing a common global product to be used by all subsidiaries in an MNC, but with openings for local market adaptations. The empirical findings show that: (1) the management had two goals with the project, which were conveyed and understood differently depending on organizational level and organizational belonging, (2) the administrative heritage of the MNC influenced the use of information communication technology for sharing information and knowledge, and (3) the impact of frequency and structure of communication for information processing.

  • Enabling knowledge creation and sharing in transnational projects
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Project Management. ; :24, s. 191-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we link the discussion of knowledge management enablers to research on transnational projects. A transnational project is a cross-border organizational unit composed of members of different nationalities, working in dispersed business units and functions, thereby possessing knowledge for solving strategic tasks in the MNC. Understanding of knowledge creation and sharing processes is essential, hence the purpose of this article is to investigate how different enablers support these processes within transnational projects. Using case-study data to explore the theoretical arguments, interesting implications emerge. First, organizational culture is the most prominent enabler, and is encouraged by the composition of project members. Second, impact and importance of enablers vary over time. Third, the enablers are interrelated.

  • Exploring the performance of transnational projects : Shared knowledge, coordination and communication
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Project Management. - : Elsevier. - 0263-7863 .- 1873-4634. ; 28:6, s. 529-538
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the discussion on transnational project performance is linked to knowledge sharing. The aim is to enhance our knowledge of how knowledge sharing affects transnational project performance. Using case study data, derived from a transnational project assigned with the task of developing a transnational product, show that transnational project performance was hampered by communication and coordination difficulties. The findings show how (1) the double meaning of knowledge sharing and (2) the organizational context as setting the boundaries for project management in practice are related to transnational project performance.

  • Knowledge development and sharing in multinational corporations : The case of a centre of excellence and a transnational team
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Business Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-5931 .- 1873-6149. ; 15:4, s. 381-400:15 (4), s. 381-400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we link the discussion on the differentiated multinational corporation (MNC) with organisational mechanisms for knowledge development and sharing. The aim is to explore the impact of different organisational mechanisms on knowledge development and sharing. Using case-study data-drawn from the same MNC-to explore two different organisational mechanisms, a Centre of Excellence and a transnational team, the findings illustrate how multifaceted knowledge development and sharing are. The organisational structure of the two organisational mechanisms partly determines whether knowledge development occurs locally or globally. This, in turn, has consequences for how knowledge sharing evolves. The sharing process is like a double-edged sword: how to share globally while allowing for local adaptations or how to share locally while developing global knowledge.

  • Knowledge integration in a multinational setting : a study of a transnational business project
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Knowledge Management Studies. - : Inderscience. - 1743-8268 .- 1743-8276. ; 3:3-4, s. 295-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to study how communication enables knowledge integration within transnational projects. Using longitudinal case study data to explore the theoretical arguments, interesting findings emerge. The main finding is that knowledge integration within the transnational project was hampered by ignorance – among project managers and members – of the impact and link between the use of different communication tools, subsequent communication process and knowledge integration. Other findings relate to how institutionalised behaviour persist change and subsequently partly explained why the communication process and thereto related communication tools were not adjusted to new circumstances and conditions. Finally, communication is an inherent part of knowledge integration within a transnational project and there is a need for communication to be sensitive to the complexity of the knowledge being integrated.
