  • Preferences for Landscapes: A Matter of Cultural Determinants or Innate Reflexes that Point to Our Evolutionary Background?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Landscape Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0142-6397 .- 1469-9710. ; 37, s. 27-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two different theories exist relating to preferences for landscapes: 1) people prefer certain types of landscape independent of their cultural and ethnic background-preferences are innate; 2) people prefer landscapes experienced during childhood regardless of their appearance owing to learned conceptions-preferences are determined by culture. Our aim was to evaluate relationships among preferences for landscapes and childhood landscapes. Results are based on a questionnaire sent out at random to 2000 people in Sweden, and on a qualitative study comprising 19 people. They show that people: i) feel more at home in the type of landscape they grew up in and more often choose to settle down in this type of landscape, even if they have moved from their childhood region; ii) prefer qualities connected to childhood landscapes. However, some of these qualities, those suggested to be innate, are more preferred than others. In conclusion, people prefer landscapes experienced during childhood, but seem to attach more easily to qualities that are suggested to have an innate significance.

  • Stress rehabilitation through garden therapy A caregiver perspective on factors considered most essential to the recovery process
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Urban Forestry & Urban Greening. - : Elsevier BV. - 1618-8667 .- 1610-8167. ; 11, s. 51-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the Alnarp Rehabilitation Garden in Sweden, people suffering from stress-related illness are rehabilitated through garden therapy. Empirical data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus-group interviews with the rehabilitation team. The present article is based on team members' understandings of significant factors to the stress recovery process. On-site observations were conducted to achieve a broader comprehension of the empirical data. The article is based on the caregivers' points of view, as they are presumed to be close to the course of events occurring in the garden therapy programme as a whole. The results reveal a generally complex picture of the rehabilitation form, but at the same time indicate three factors that are of primary importance: (1) sensory impressions, (2) self-chosen places in the garden, and (3) interactions between concrete and symbolic activities. The garden environment tends to "prepare, receive and open up" the participants before and after therapeutic elements, which is thought to be especially appropriate for this group. The results provide important knowledge about what kinds of factors contribute to relief and recovery from stress-related ill-health in the context of stress rehabilitation through garden therapy. • Supportive nature - and stress : wellbeing in connection to our inner and outer landscape
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many benefits are claimed for the interplay between humans and nature, such as nature’s potentially positive effect on wellbeing and health. The main aim with the present work was to increase the understanding of how nature nvironments can support and contribute to health improvement from stress related experiences. Different landscape types’ effect on stress was studied in Sweden. Single case-studies focused on factors considered being essential in the recovery process for people diagnosed with exhaustion disorder within a stress rehabilitation-program through garden therapy in Alnarp, Sweden. A simplified conclusion of the thesis would be that the childhood landscape seems to play a significant role affecting the choice of the adult’s recreational setting - and recreational activity when stress is included. People feel more at home in the type of landscape they grew up in and more often chose to settle down in this type of landscape; even if they have moved from their childhood region. People also prefer qualities connected to their childhood landscape, but seem to attach more easily to qualities suggested having innate significance. The stress-recovery process within the garden therapy seems to be supported, hastened and deepened because of a multisensory change in awareness when contact with nature is combined with therapeutic interventions. Different psycho-physiological processes are discussed as well as the importance of self-chosen places in the garden based on present mood and the significance of the interaction between symbolic and concrete activities. The garden, the caregivers, and the group of participants together make up an arena which combines structure with freedom of action, in which the participants get the chance to regulate their needs and desires. Two hypotheses are presented, which might contribute to filling some current gaps in knowledge regarding the potential benefits of human interactions with nature.

  • Therapeutic interventions in a rehabilitation garden may induce temporary extrovert and/or introvert behavioural changes in patients, suffering from stress-related disorders
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Urban Forestry & Urban Greening. - : Elsevier BV. - 1618-8667 .- 1610-8167. ; 30, s. 182-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients being treated for stress-related mental illness were observed during two summer programs in order to investigate the influence of multimodal nature-based therapy in a specially designed healing garden on patient recovery. The aim was to distinguish specific qualities, patterns and/or processes during the participants' stay in the healing garden. The study is a single-case study, using participatory observation. The data were coded following an inductive research process. The results showed that patients who underwent psychotherapy were more open and contact-seeking, and carried out extrovert recreational walks. By contrast, patients who underwent physiotherapy were introverted, emotionally withdrawn and performed introvert recreational walks. Interpretation of the data suggested that treatment combined with activities in certain parts of the rehabilitation garden induced and supported different psycho-physiological processes. The mechanisms and progress of these are discussed from the theory of situated cognition, and how these processes are stimulated and supported by characteristics in the garden. Oxytocin, a hypothalamic peptide which stimulates social interaction, induces anti-stress effects and stimulates growth and healing, may hypothetically be involved in these processes.
