  • Children's Rights to and in Sport : A Comparative Analysis of Organizational Policies in the Scandinavian Countries
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Social Sciences. - : MDPI. - 2076-0760. ; 13:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has long been stated that children have the rights to protection from, e.g., abuse and to the provision of age-appropriate leisure, play, and recreational activities along with participation in all matters that concerns them. Yet, the full range of children's rights to and in sport has not yet been explored in detail. To do so, it is relevant to turn to the Scandinavian countries, which are praised for promoting children's rights and well-being, with organized sport forming part of the daily lives of many children and youths. In this paper, we examine the organizational policies in Scandinavian sport in order to develop foundational knowledge about how the range of children's rights to and in sport may be supported. Comparing key policy documents of the major sports confederations in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, these analyses identify great variety in the following: 1. when and how children's rights to and in sport have been made explicit in the three countries; 2. whether the emphasis is on protection and/or provision of sport to children and youths or their participation in shaping sporting activities; 3. the degree to and ways in which such rights are regulated. In sum, our findings reflect a disparity between organizational policies in the three countries, with a more liberal and individualistic approach to public policy in the Danish context, providing some explanation of the only recent development in and scattered enaction of regulations to support children's rights to and in sports. Furthermore, we identify that political attention has mainly been drawn to the protection and provision of sports to children and youths, while their participation in shaping sport is a shared challenge for sport confederations in the Scandinavian countries and beyond.

  • Player Migration and Talent Development in Elite Sports Teams: A comparative analysis of inbound and outbound career trajectories in Danish and Norwegian women’s handball
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Sport Studies Forum. - : Department of Sport Studies, Malmö University. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conditions for national sport systems and talent development efforts are changing with the globalisation of sports. In the present study we explored the relationship between domestic talent development and the immigration of players from abroad through a comparative multiple-case study of Danish and Norwegian women’s handball. Quantitative data demonstrated how there has been a remarkable increase in not only the number, but also the performance level of immigrant players arriving into Danish women’s handball, in particular, in the first decade of the 2000s. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 12 experienced coaches and sport directors who have in-depth knowledge of group dynamics in elite handball. Using Lave and Wenger’s theory of situated learning in communities of practice the analysis demonstrated the ambiguous consequences of considerable immigration on the position and learning situation of domestic talent. Inbound trajectories of domestic talent may be supported by apprenticeship from many skilled role models (e.g. immigrant players), while an outbound trajectory may also appear, specifically if the young domestic players are continually hampered from participation in matches. It seems that it is not the high number of players from abroad, per se, that may block the development of local young talent, but first and foremost the structuring of training and match practices in the clubs and national leagues.

  • The Copenhagen Consensus Conference 2016 : children, youth, and physical activity in schools and during leisure time
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Sports Medicine. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 0306-3674 .- 1473-0480. ; 50:19, s. 1177-1178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • From 4 to 7 April 2016, 24 researchers from 8 countries and from a variety of academic disciplines gathered in Snekkersten, Denmark, to reach evidence-based consensus about physical activity in children and youth, that is, individuals between 6 and 18 years. Physical activity is an overarching term that consists of many structured and unstructured forms within school and out-of-school-time contexts, including organised sport, physical education, outdoor recreation, motor skill development programmes, recess, and active transportation such as biking and walking. This consensus statement presents the accord on the effects of physical activity on children's and youth's fitness, health, cognitive functioning, engagement, motivation, psychological well-being and social inclusion, as well as presenting educational and physical activity implementation strategies. The consensus was obtained through an iterative process that began with presentation of the state-of-the art in each domain followed by plenary and group discussions. Ultimately, Consensus Conference participants reached agreement on the 21-item consensus statement.

  • Understanding women’s professional soccer : the case of Denmark and Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Soccer & Society. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1466-0970 .- 1743-9590. ; 14:6, s. 816-833
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women’s soccer has developed rapidly over the past 20 years, and the sport has transitioned from being a solely amateur one to a professional sport with work opportunities for women footballers from around the world. The purpose of this study is to explore professionalization processes of Swedish and Danish women’s soccer. This study is designed as a qualitative case study conducting document analysis of the new licence programme implemented by the Swedish and Danish soccer associations in 2012. The article suggests that women’s professional soccer, in a Scandinavian context, is best understood through the theoretical construct of ‘new professionalism’. Professionalism has become a goal in itself and an ideology for women’s soccer in Denmark and Sweden, and as a consequence, women’s soccer is in the process of becoming a regulated and rational business structure in Scandinavia due to the implementation of national licence manuals.

  • What’s at play? Power, transnational coaches and the global hegemony of performance within Danish elite swimming
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sport in Society. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1743-0437 .- 1743-0445. ; 25:6, s. 1211-1226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the discourses in power in Danish elite swimming from 2003 to 2013. Gramsci’s perspective was used to deconstruct the hegemonic cultural leadership enacted by coaches and administrators in the Danish Swimming Federation and Team Danmark. Transnational coaches were also engaged in the hegemonic practices towards elite swimmers in Denmark in the quest for Olympic medals. With the exception of a few abortive rebellions, the athletes complied with the hegemonic practices because their coaches and the Danish Swimming Federation were the gatekeepers of their success. These findings are discussed in the context of the evolvement of a neo-liberal funding structure for elite sport in the Western world. The transnational coaches appear to be representing an ideological superstructure in which sporting performance became the sole measure of success (and allocation of funds) in Danish elite sport policy. This study suggests that there is a need of ensuring that athletes’ voices are being heard through an independent regulatory council.
