Constructive Analysis : A Study in Epistemological Methodology

- In the present study, it is argued that much of contemporary epistemology has not been conducted in a way conducive to what should be one of its main goals, namely to guide epistemic inquiry in the attainment of our most central epistemic goals. Furthermore, it is claimed that the very reason that epistemology has failed to do so pertains to an entrenched?indeed, in a sense, a literally ancient?but implausible methodology, best understood as the pursuit of definitions by way of intuitions. More specifically, the present study not only (a) argues that we ought to revise this methodology and (b) puts forward an alternative, but also (c) demonstrates the usefulness of this alternative methodology within the analysis of epistemic justification. With respect to the latter, it is first argued that some of the most influential theories fail and that our concept of justification?considering the goals of epistemic inquiry?is best reconstructed in terms of truth-conductivity, and then, through a discussion of psychological research relevant to reasoning strategies, shown how such a reconstructed concept may be used to improve on actual truth-seeking inquiry.

- Recently, Hilary Kornblith has argued that epistemological investigation is substantially empirical. In the present paper, I will first show that his claim is not contingent upon the further and, admittedly, controversial assumption that all objects of epistemological investigation are natural kinds. Then, I will argue that, contrary to what Kornblith seems to assume, this methodological contention does not imply that there is no need for attending to our epistemic concepts in epistemology. Understanding the make-up of our concepts and, in particular, the purposes they fill, is necessary for a proper acknowledgment of epistemology’s role in conceptual improvement.

- The generality problem is the problem, particularly pressing for the reliabilist, of demarcating relevant from irrelevant belief-forming process and method types. In the present paper, I distinguish between two aspects of the problem—the problem of vacuity and the problem of testability—and argue that the reliabilist may come to terms with both by paying attention to how generality problems are regularly and consistently solved within the natural sciences.

- Recently, Hilary Kornblith (2006, 2002) has argued that epistemological analysis is a substantially a posteriori investigation. In the present talk, I will argue two things. First, I will argue that Kornblith’s claim is, in fact, not contingent upon the further and, admittedly, controversial assumption that all objects of epistemological investigation are natural kinds. Second, I will argue that, contrary to what Kornblith seems to assume, this methodological contention does not imply that there is no need for attending to our epistemic concepts in epistemology. Understanding the make-up of our concepts and, in particular, the purposes they fill, is neces-sary for a proper acknowledgement of epistemology’s role in certain cases of conceptual improvement.

- Originally put forward by Smart and Maxwell in the 1960’s, and later revived by Putnam (1975) and Boyd (1984), the no miracle argument for scientific realism has been much discussed. In this paper, I try to repudiate an anti- realist charge of circularity on the argument, here further scrutinized through a recent formulation due to Stathis Psillos (1999). Moreover, I attempt to turn the tables around on the anti-realists by arguing that they can hardly be said be able to explain the disheartening historical picture suggested by some of their own arguments, especially the ones pertaining to the famous pessimistic induction.
