  • Organizational changes, trust and information sharing : an empirical study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management. - : Emerald. - 2050-3806 .- 2050-3814. ; 71:5, s. 677-692
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeWhile there is relatively plenty of evidence for the positive impact of communication on the perceptions of organizational change, how organizational changes affect information sharing is relatively unknown. The purpose of this paper is to investigate if a favorable perception of ongoing organizational changes has a positive impact on information sharing and whether trust mediates this relationship.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire (n=317) was administered to the employees of a large Finnish multinational organization. Partial least square structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses based on earlier research findings.FindingsThe results show that a positive perception of recent organizational changes improves information sharing both directly and indirectly, mediated by trust. Consequently, when changes are perceived negatively, employees recoil from information sharing which is known to have negative implications for organizations.Research limitations/implicationsData were collected in a single organization. The nature of the specific changes in the studied organization and its particularities undoubtedly had an effect on respondents’ perceptions.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to organizational information management research by elaborating on the relationship between organizational changes and interpersonal information sharing between employees. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first quantitative study confirming the impact of the perception of organizational changes on employee information-sharing behavior.

  • The impact of workplace information literacy on organizational innovation : An empirical study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information Management. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0268-4012 .- 1873-4707. ; 51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study investigates the relationship between CEO's information literacy and innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Even if information literacy's business value has been recognized in recent literature, its impact on organizational innovation, a critical and strongly information intensive process, has never been studied before. Structural equation modeling based analysis of data collected from 184 company CEOs in Finland revealed that CEOs' information literacy has a positive impact on the development of exploratory and exploitative innovations in SMEs. Additionally, opportunity recognition mediates the relationship between information literacy and innovation. Overall, the influence of information literacy is slightly stronger on exploitation than exploration. Nevertheless, the mutual positive effect suggests that information literacy enhances innovation ambidexterity in organizations. Based on these findings, we discuss theoretical and practical implications as well as future research opportunities in workplace information literacy research.

  • A kaleidoscope of photosynthetic antenna proteins and their emerging roles
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Plant Physiology. - : Oxford University Press. - 0032-0889 .- 1532-2548. ; 189:3, s. 1204-1219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photosynthetic light-harvesting antennae are pigment-binding proteins that perform one of the most fundamental tasks on Earth, capturing light and transferring energy that enables life in our biosphere. Adaptation to different light environments led to the evolution of an astonishing diversity of light-harvesting systems. At the same time, several strategies have been developed to optimize the light energy input into photosynthetic membranes in response to fluctuating conditions. The basic feature of these prompt responses is the dynamic nature of antenna complexes, whose function readily adapts to the light available. High-resolution microscopy and spectroscopic studies on membrane dynamics demonstrate the crosstalk between antennae and other thylakoid membrane components. With the increased understanding of light-harvesting mechanisms and their regulation, efforts are focusing on the development of sustainable processes for effective conversion of sunlight into functional bio-products. The major challenge in this approach lies in the application of fundamental discoveries in light-harvesting systems for the improvement of plant or algal photosynthesis. Here, we underline some of the latest fundamental discoveries on the molecular mechanisms and regulation of light harvesting that can potentially be exploited for the optimization of photosynthesis.

  • Seeking innovation : The research protocol for SMEs' networking
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Heliyon. - : Cell Press. - 2405-8440. ; 9:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper aims to state the research protocol for the innovation-seeking behavior of Small-to Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), related to the classification of knowledge needs expressed in the networking databases. The dataset of 9301 networking offers as the outcome of proactive attitudes represents the content of the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) database. The data set has been semi-automatically obtained using the rvest R package, and then analyzed using static word embedding neural network architecture: Continuous Bag-of-Words (CBoW), predictive model Skip-Gram, and Global Vectors for Word Representation (GloVe) considered the state-of-the-art models, to create topic-specific lexicons. The proportion of offers labeled as Exploitative innovation to Explorative innovation is balanced with a 51%-49% proportion. The prediction rates show good performance with an AUC score of 0.887, and the prediction rates for exploratory innovation 0.878 and explorative innovation 0.857. The performance of predictions with the frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) technique shows that the research protocol is sufficient to categorize the innovation-seeking behavior of SMEs using static word embedding based on the description of knowledge needs and text classification, but it is not perfect due to the general entropy related to the outcome of networking. In the context of networking, SMEs place a greater emphasis on explorative innovation in their innovation-seeking behavior. They prioritize smart technologies and global business cooperation, whereas current information technologies and software are more of interest to SMEs that adopt an exploitative innovation approach.

  • Clinical testing panels for ALS : global distribution, consistency, and challenges
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Frontotemporal Degeneration. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2167-8421 .- 2167-9223. ; 24:5-6, s. 420-435
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: In 2021, the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) spectrum disorders Gene Curation Expert Panel (GCEP) was established to evaluate the strength of evidence for genes previously reported to be associated with ALS. Through this endeavor, we will provide standardized guidance to laboratories on which genes should be included in clinical genetic testing panels for ALS. In this manuscript, we aimed to assess the heterogeneity in the current global landscape of clinical genetic testing for ALS.Methods: We reviewed the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Genetic Testing Registry (GTR) and members of the ALS GCEP to source frequently used testing panels and compare the genes included on the tests. Results: 14 clinical panels specific to ALS from 14 laboratories covered 4 to 54 genes. All panels report on ANG, SOD1, TARDBP, and VAPB; 50% included or offered the option of including C9orf72 hexanucleotide repeat expansion (HRE) analysis. Of the 91 genes included in at least one of the panels, 40 (44.0%) were included on only a single panel. We could not find a direct link to ALS in the literature for 14 (15.4%) included genes. Conclusions: The variability across the surveyed clinical genetic panels is concerning due to the possibility of reduced diagnostic yields in clinical practice and risk of a missed diagnoses for patients. Our results highlight the necessity for consensus regarding the appropriateness of gene inclusions in clinical genetic ALS tests to improve its application for patients living with ALS and their families.

  • Everyday Health Information Literacy and Attitudes Towards Digital Health Services Among Finnish Older Adults
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information Literacy in a Post-Truth Era. - Cham : Springer Nature. - 9783030998844 - 9783030998851 ; , s. 314-325
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Everyday health information literacy (EHIL) denotes people’s confidence and perceptions of their capability to obtain, evaluate, and use health information in everyday life. This paper presents results from a survey of older Finns on how EHIL relates to perceptions of digital health services. A postal survey was conducted with a random sample of 1,500 Finns aged 55– 70 years. In total, 373 completed surveys (25%) were returned. We used an adapted screening tool to measure EHIL and subject position scales to indicate attitudes towards digital health services. The data were analysed using PLS-SEM in SmartPLS 3.0. The analysis suggested that EHIL is positively related to more positive attitudes to digital health services and negatively to more negative attitudes to such services. The results emphasise the importance of EHIL as an enabler of the acceptance of digital health services. The study also introduces new methods for analysing EHIL.

  • Co-doped cerium oxide Fe0.25xMnxCe0.75O2-delta as a composite cathode material for IT-SOFC
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - Amsterdam, Netherlands : Elsevier. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 906
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, Fe-Mn co-doped ceria Fe0.25Mn0.00Ce0.75O2-delta (FMDC1), Fe0.23Mn0.02Ce0.75O2-δ (FMDC2), Fe0.21Mn0.04Ce0.75O2-δ  (FMDC3), and Fe0.19Mn0.06Ce0.75O2-δ  (FMDC4) powders are synthesized by sol gel method and evaluated as cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC). The combination of Fe and Mn significantly enhanced the ceria catalytic activity and oxygen kinetics for redox-based reactions. The effects of the co-doping mechanism on the phase composition, optical behavior, and electrochemical performance are mainly investigated. The prepared samples are characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, UV-vis, and conductivity tests. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed well-developed crystallinity with a single phase cubic structure of synthesized cathode material. SEM depicted the highly porous facet for Fe0.19Mn0.06Ce0.75O2-δ  (FMDC4) resulted in the large triple-phase boundaries for the reduction of ambient air. The inclusion of Mn3+ and Fe3+ ions into CeO2 network created additional oxygen vacancies (Ov) and simultaneously reduced the optical band gap energy from 2.81 eV for FMDC1 (x = 0.00) to 2.54 eV for FMDC4 (x = 0.06). Among the four samples, FMDC4 possessed the highest electrical conductivity (∼0.89 Scm-1) at 650 degrees C and corresponding low activation energy of similar to 0.301 eV, which lead to good catalytic activity with an enhanced electrochemical performance of the SOFC system. The open-circuit voltage (OCV) attained the value of   ∼0.98 V, maximum power density of ∼335 mW cm-2 is obtained at 550 degrees C, which is comparable to previously reported electrodes. The results suggested that the combination of Fe and Mn into ceria can be used as an effective catalytic promoter for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), and the composition of FMDC4 resulted in the peak conductivity, short term stability and highest power density as compared to other synthesized samples. • Holistic information behavior and the perceived success of work in organizations
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Library & Information Science Research. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 0740-8188 .- 1873-1848. ; 40:1, s. 18-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surprisingly little is known about the relationship between perceived work success and information behavior. This study shows that holistic (versus organization-centric) information behavioral preferences are related to interaction and exchange oriented perceptions of the success of work. The findings were drawn from a partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) based analysis of the survey data (N = 305) collected from employees of a large multinational corporation. The findings suggest that holistic information behavior is more strongly related to social measures of success, whereas their association with quantitative measures tends to be lower. From the perspective of information behavior research, the findings suggest that holism seems to be a similar factor to, for instance, task complexity or personality, which influences human information behavior and, for instance, perceptions of relevance. From a practical perspective, the study suggests that the promotion of specific facets of measuring success and patterns of information behavior can be used to influence the orientation of working between centrifugality and openness.
