  • A facile way of making inexpensive rigid and soft protein biofoams with rapid liquid absorption
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Industrial crops and products (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0926-6690 .- 1872-633X. ; 119, s. 41-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel and facile method to produce inexpensive protein biofoams suitable for sponge applications is presented. The protein used in the study was wheat gluten (WG), readily available as a by/co-product, but the method is expected to work for other cross-linkable proteins. The foams were obtained by high-speed stirring of pristine WG powder in water at room temperature followed by drying. Glutaraldehyde was used to crosslink the foam material in order to stabilize the dispersion, reduce its tackiness and improve the strength of the final foam. The foams were of medium to high density and absorbed readily both hydrophobic and hydrophilic liquids. The foam structure, consisting primarily of an open pore/channel system, led to a remarkably fast capillary-driven (pore-filling only) uptake of a hydrophobic liquid (limonene). Essentially all uptake occurred within the first second (to ca. 90% of the dry weight). In a polar liquid (water), the rapid pore-filling occurred in parallel with a more time-dependent swelling of the foam matrix material. Further improvement in the foam strength was achieved by making a denser foam or adding TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibres. Soft foams were obtained by adding glycerol.

  • Model microemulsions containing vegetable oils Part 1: Nonionic surfactant systems
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Oil Chemists Society. - 0003-021X .- 1558-9331. ; 66, s. 1656-1660
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonionic microemulsions containing triglucerides and fatty acid esters as lipophilic components have been studied. The phase inversion temperature (PIT) of the systems was determined by a conductometric method. Partial phase diagrams were constructed in the phase inversion temperature range. Water solubilization capacity of the nonionic surfactant systems studied was dependent on surfactant and oil types in analogy to ordinary hydrocarbon systems. The PIT:s increased with increased molecular weight for both esters and triglycerides.

  • Model microemulsions containing vegetable oils Part 2: Ionic surfactant systems
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Oil Chemists Society. - 0003-021X .- 1558-9331. ; 66, s. 1661-1665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phase behavior and the structure of ionic microemulsions, stabilized by sodium oleate and different alcohol cosurfactants, containing fatty acid esters or triglycerides as lipophilic components, have been investigated. Microemulsions containing triglycerides display a smaller stability region than microemulsions containing hydrocarbons or fatty acid esters. From structural investigations, using the NMR FT pulsed gradient spin echo method for measuring self-diffusion coefficients, differences in the microstructure are revealed as well. Adding an ester (or a hydrocarbon) to a microemulsion containing sodium oleate/pentanol will at certain compositions lead to a gradual transition from a bicontinuous to an oilcontinuous system, while this behavior cannot be detected when adding a triglyceride. Instead, a phase-separation occurs, and it is suggested that the larger molecular size of the triglyceride is responsible for the diffirence.

  • Genetic Algorithms as a Tool for Wavelength Selection
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th Finnish Artificial Intelligence Conference (STeP 2004) in Vantaa (Finland), Volume 3. ; , s. 99-113
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work is a careful implementation of a genetic algorithm (GA) for pre-selection of wavelengths, combined with partial least squares regression (PLS) for modelling of near-infrared (NIR) data. We show that NIR spectro- metry can be used for concentration measurements when background noise has not been limited and no chemical properties of the substances are known. We use an alternative brute force approach working for any convergent GA. It works by generating many solutions, preferably by using different GA parameters, and then constructing the final solution by only including variables found in a majority of all solutions. The proposed method is based on three assumptions: existence of data, varying measurement noise and selection of data wavelengths that are more fruitful than noise.

  • Wavelength selection by genetic algorithms in near infrared spectra for melanoma diagnosis
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IFMBE Proceedings, Volume 11, 3rd European Medical & Biological Engineering Conference (EMBEC’05) in Prague (Czech Republic).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early, reliable and fast diagnosis of melanoma is particularly important as the number of cases is increasing. In this paper, the potential of using near infrared spectroscopy for melanoma diagnosis is studied. The classification task is complicated by a low signal-to-noise ratio and the high dimensionality of the spectral data. Thus pre-selection of wavelength variables is required. Atypical naevi samples of patients were clinically classified, using the ABCD rule, and their near infrared spectra recorded. A nonlinear clustering model for spectral based classification was calibrated to the spectra and pathologist?s classification using a genetic algorithm. The genetic algorithm optimized the spectral based classification by selecting wavelengths correlated to melanoma. Some wavelength selections allowed correct classification of all samples in our dataset. The small size of the dataset and uncertainty in the clinical classification, however, limit the conclusions that can be drawn. Evidence for the existence of spectral regions that contain information needed for melanoma diagnosis is presented.
