  • User-Centric Radio Access Technology Selection : A Survey of Game Theory Models and Multi-Agent Learning Algorithms

    • User-centric radio access technology (RAT) selection is a key communication paradigm, given the increased number of available RATs and increased cognitive capabilities at the user end. When considered against traditional network-centric approaches, user-centric RAT selection results in reduced network-side management load, and leads to lower operational costs for RATs, as well as improved quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) for users. The complex between-users interactions involved in RAT selection require, however, specific analyses, toward developing reliable and efficient schemes. Two theoretical frameworks are most often applied to user-centric RAT selection analysis, i.e., game theory (GT) and multi-agent learning (MAL). As a consequence, several GT models and MAL algorithms have been recently proposed to solve the problem at hand. A comprehensive discussion of such models and algorithms is, however, currently missing. Moreover, novel issues introduced by next-generation communication systems also need to be addressed. This paper proposes to fill the above gaps by providing a unified reference for both ongoing research and future research directions in the field. In particular, the review addresses the most common GT and MAL models and algorithms, and scenario settings adopted in user-centric RAT selection in terms of utility function and network topology. Regarding GT, the review focuses on non-cooperative models, because of their widespread use in RAT selection; as for MAL, a large number of algorithms are described, ranging from game-theoretic to reinforcement learning (RL) schemes, and also including most recent approaches, such as deep RL (DRL) and multi-armed bandit (MAB). Models and algorithms are analyzed by comparatively reviewing relevant literature. Finally, open challenges are discussed, in light of ongoing research and standardization activities.

  • Positioning by fingerprinting with multiple cells in NB-IoT networks

    • Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) has quickly become a leading technology in the deployment of IoT systems and services, thanks to its appealing features in terms of coverage and energy efficiency, as well as compatibility with existing mobile networks. Increasingly, IoT services and applications require location information to be paired with data collected by devices; NB-IoT still lacks, however, reliable positioning methods. Time-based techniques inherited from Long Term Evolution (LTE) are not yet widely available in existing networks, and are expected to perform poorly on NB-IoT signals due to their narrow bandwidth. This investigation proposes a set of strategies for NB-IoT positioning, based on fingerprinting, that use coverage and radio information from multiple cells. The proposed strategies are evaluated on a large-scale dataset that includes experimental data from two NB-IoT operators. Results show that the proposed strategies, using a combination of coverage and radio information from multiple cells, outperform current state-of-the-art approaches based on single cell finger-printing, with a minimum average positioning error of about 20 meters, consistent across different network scenarios, vs. about 70 meters for current state-of-the-art.

  • A Modular Experimentation Methodology for 5G Deployments : The 5GENESIS Approach

    • The high heterogeneity of 5G use cases requires the extension of the traditional per-component testing procedures provided by certification organizations, in order to devise and incorporate methodologies that cover the testing requirements from vertical applications and services. In this paper, we introduce an experimentation methodology that is defined in the context of the 5GENESIS project, which aims at enabling both the testing of network components and validation of E2E KPIs. The most important contributions of this methodology are its modularity and flexibility, as well as the open-source software that was developed for its application, which enable lightweight adoption of the methodology in any 5G testbed. We also demonstrate how the methodology can be used, by executing and analyzing different experiments in a 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) deployment at the University of Malaga. The key findings of the paper are an initial 5G performance assessment and KPI analysis and the detection of under-performance issues at the application level. Those findings highlight the need for reliable testing and validation procedures towards a fair benchmarking of generic 5G services and applications.

    • The exact closed-form expressions for symbol error probability and outage probability of randomized distributed space-time codes (RDSTC) under Rayleigh fading are derived. The diversity gain derived in the literature uses the Chernoff bound which may not be achievable in general. Utilizing the exact expression, the achievable diversity gain of RDSTCs is validated. The closed-form expressions are verified by Monte-Carlo simulations.

    • This paper presents FLEX-MONROE, a unique platform that facilitates achieving a thorough understanding of LTE networks, one that captures the status of current operational MBB networks and that also enables LTE performance improvements by allowing experimentation in an environment with controllable LTE parameters. Using this platform, we propose to investigate how variations in the LTE network parameters influence the network characteristics, which, in turn, translate to application performance metrics that represent the end-user experience. We argue that the FLEX-MONROE platform is crucial to understand, validate and ultimately improve how current operational MBB networks perform, towards providing guidelines for designing future 5G architectures. Furthermore, understanding the effects of low-level tweaks in network parameters in the LTE infrastructure on the application performance is critical to provide guidelines on how to improve the application performance in the current but also future MBB networks

  • Speedtest-like Measurements in 3G/4G Networks : the MONROE Experience

    • Mobile Broadband (MBB) Networks are evolving at a fast pace, with technology enhancements that promise drastic improvements in capacity, connectivity, coverage, i.e., better performance in general. But how to measure the actual performance of a MBB solution? In this paper, we present our experience in running the simplest of the performance test: "speedtest-like" measurements to estimate the download speed offered by actual 3G/4G networks. Despite their simplicity, download speed measurements in MBB networks are much more complex than in wired networks, because of additional factors (e.g., mobility of users, physical impairments, diversity in technology, operator settings, mobile terminals diversity, etc.). We exploit the MONROE open platform, with hundreds of multihomed nodes scattered in 4 different countries, and explicitly designed with the goal of providing hardware and software solutions to run large scale experiments in MBB networks. We analyze datasets collected in 4 countries, over 11 operators, from about 50 nodes, for more than 2 months. After designing the experiment and instrumenting both the clients and the servers with active and passive monitoring tools, we dig into collected data, and provide insight to highlight the complexity of running even a simple speedtest. Results show interesting facts, like the occasional presence of NAT, and of Performance Enhancing Proxies (PEP), and pinpoint the impact of different network configurations that further complicate the picture. Our results will hopefully contribute to the debate about performance assessment in MBB networks, and to the definition of much needed benchmarks for performance comparisons of 3G, 4G and soon of 5G networks.

    • This paper describes the pathway towards the realisation of a 5G Facility that will allow the validation of the major 5G Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). It reflects the approach that the 5GENESIS consortium will adopt in this direction. More precisely, it describes the key design principles of such Facility as well as the targeted use cases for the KPIs validation. The adopted approach for the Facility realisation includes the design of a common implementation blueprint that will be instantiated in five Platforms distributed across Europe. To maximise the diversity and the efficiency of the Facility, complementary performance objectives have been selected for the Platforms, while specific characteristics from different vertical industries have been allocated to each of them.

    • Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is gaining momentum as a promising technology for massive machine type communication. Given that its deployment is rapidly progressing worldwide, measurement campaigns and performance analyses are needed to better understand the system and move toward its enhancement. With this aim, this article presents a large-scale measurement campaign and empirical analysis of NB-IoT on operational networks, and discloses valuable insights in terms of deployment strategies and radio coverage performance. The reported results also serve as examples showing the potential usage of the collected dataset, which we make open source along with a lightweight data visualization platform.

    • Fifth Generation (5G) networks are becoming the norm in the global telecommunications industry. In this paper, we present the first large-scale measurement study on commercial 5G Non Standalone (NSA) deployments in a European country. We leverage the collected dataset, which covers two Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Rome, Italy, to first, study network deployment and radio coverage aspects, and second, explore the performance of two use cases related to enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC). Results show that 5G NSA can provide higher downlink throughput and slightly lower latency compared to Fourth Generation (4G) systems. However, performance is influenced by several factors, including propagation conditions, system configurations, and handover events, ultimately highlighting the need for further system optimization.
