  • Probing the efficiency of electron transfer through porphyrin-based molecular wires
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5126 .- 0002-7863. ; 129:14, s. 4291-4297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electron transfer over long distances is important for many future applications in molecular electronics and solar energy harvesting. In these contexts, it is of great interest to find molecular systems that are able to efficiently mediate electrons in a controlled manner over nanometer distances, that is, structures that function as molecular wires. Here we investigate a series of butadiyne-linked porphyrin oligomers with ferrocene and fullerene (C-60) terminals separated by one, two, or four porphyrin units (P-n, n = 1, 2, or 4). When the porphyrin oligomer bridges are photoexcited, long-range charge separated states are formed through a series of electron-transfer steps and the rates of photoinduced charge separation and charge recombination in these systems were elucidated using time-resolved absorption and emission measurements. The rates of long-range charge recombination, through these conjugated porphyrin oligomers, are remarkably fast (k(CR2) = 15 - 1.3 x 10(8) s(-1)) and exhibit very weak distance dependence, particularly comparing the systems with n = 2 and n = 4. The observation that the porphyrin tetramer mediates fast long-range charge transfer, over 65 angstrom, is significant for the application of these structures as molecular wires.

  • Multi laboratory evaluation of ReaScan TBE IgM rapid test, 2016 to 2017

    • Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a potentially severe neurological disease caused by TBE virus (TBEV). In Europe and Asia, TBEV infection has become a growing public health concern and requires fast and specific detection. Aim: In this observational study, we evaluated a rapid TBE IgM test, ReaScan TBE, for usage in a clinical laboratory setting. Methods: Patient sera found negative or positive for TBEV by serological and/or molecular methods in diagnostic laboratories of five European countries endemic for TBEV (Estonia, Finland, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Sweden) were used to assess the sensitivity and specificity of the test. The patients' diagnoses were based on other commercial or quality assured in-house assays, i.e. each laboratory's conventional routine methods. For specificity analysis, serum samples from patients with infections known to cause problems in serology were employed. These samples tested positive for e.g. Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, or for flaviviruses other than TBEV, i.e. dengue, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile and Zika viruses. Samples from individuals vaccinated against flaviviruses other than TBEV were also included. Altogether, 172 serum samples from patients with acute TBE and 306 TBE IgM negative samples were analysed. Results: Compared with each laboratory's conventional methods, the tested assay had similar sensitivity and specificity (99.4% and 97.7%, respectively). Samples containing potentially interfering antibodies did not cause specificity problems. Conclusion: Regarding diagnosis of acute TBEV infections, ReaScan TBE offers rapid and convenient complementary IgM detection. If used as a stand-alone, it can provide preliminary results in a laboratory or point of care setting.

  • Efficiency enhancement and chrono-photoelectron generation in dye-sensitized solar cells based on spin-coated TiO2 nanoparticle multilayer photoanodes and a ternary iodide gel polymer electrolyte
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science-Materials in Electronics. - 0957-4522. ; 34:28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of the thickness of a multilayer TiO2 photoanode on the performance of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) made with a polyethylene oxide-based gel polymer electrolyte containing ternary iodides and performance enhancer 4-tert-butylpyridine is studied. Multilayer photoanodes consisting of up to seven layers of TiO2 nano-particles (13 nm and 21 nm) are prepared by spin coating of successive layers. XRD results confirm the predominant presence of the anatase phase of TiO2 in the multilayer structure after sintering. The SEM images reveal the formation of a single TiO2 film upon sintering due to merging of individually deposited layers. The photocurrent density (J(SC)) and the efficiency increase with the number of TiO2 layers exhibiting the maximum efficiency and J(SC) of 5.5% and 12.5 mA cm(-2), respectively, for the 5-layered electrode of total thickness 4.0 mu m with a 9.66 x 10(-8) mol cm(-2) surface dye concentration. The present study introduces a method of determining the rate of effective photoelectron generation and the average time gap between two successive photon absorptions where the respective results are 1.34 molecule(-1) s(-1) and 0.74 s for the most efficient cell studied in this work.
