  • Commuting patterns of preschool children in metropolitan Stockholm
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Regional Science Policy & Practice. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1757-7802. ; 14:4, s. 960-980
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This full population study of travel-to-preschool patterns ofthe youngest children (< 6 years old) in metropolitanStockholm analyses how school markets, even at an earlystage, reproduce inequalities related to social and geograph-ical distances. Our findings show that families with foreignbackgrounds tend to convert educational capital into socialcapital by sending their children to preschools in moresocio-economically favourable neighbourhoods. Further-more, we detect avoidance behaviour among the majoritypopulation in ethnically mixed neighbourhoods, whichindicate that some native families are inclined to avoidpreschools with high shares of non-native peers.

  • Even in preschools : analysing the preschool and neighbourhood segregation gap in Swedish municipalities
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Sociological Review. - : Oxford University Press. - 0266-7215 .- 1468-2672. ; 39:5, s. 677-691
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preschool segregation has not been the focus of research efforts to the same extent as compulsory school segregation. This is at least in part a consequence of the lack of large-scale, registry-based data sources on where children live and where they attend preschool. This paper presents a full-population account of discrepancies between preschool segregation and neighbourhood segregation covering the Swedish population. Data includes preschool children as well as their parents’ income, education, ethnic background, and place of residence. Findings indicate that while preschool segregation does not differ from neighbourhood segregation to the same extent as previous research has shown for school segregation, there are systematic differences affecting the level of segregation across Sweden and in various types of municipalities. Studies on school level show segregation by foreign background and income to be most prominent, whilst preschool segregation mostly concerns parents’ educational attainment. Furthermore, the findings show that the geographical distribution of private and public preschools affects levels of segregation. This conclusion supports the general argument that the free-choice reform in the Swedish school system tends to raise levels of school segregation above the levels of residential segregation—even in preschools.

  • Housing tenure and residential mobility in Stockholm 1990-2014
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis the links between housing tenure, income and selective, segregation generating, residential mobility are explored. The development of these links is analysed against the background of housing regime changes in Stockholm between 1990 and 2014. Housing policy changes in Sweden, and Stockholm, promote ownership through, for instance, housing tenure conversions and the tax-system. What this development means for residential mobility trends and may mean for ethnic and economic segregation is explored in three articles. Paper 1 contrasts two time periods and provides an analysis of residential mobility and economic sorting. It is shown that the socioeconomic composition of movers is relatively stable over time while the increasingly owner dominated housing market in Stockholm contributes to stronger socio-spatial residential patterns through the strengthened economic sorting of movers across the whole income scale. Paper 2 has a focus on ethnic and socioeconomic differences in out-mobility from poor neighbourhoods. The findings indicate that foreign background residents are dependent upon housing wealth and income to be able to leave poor neighbourhoods when they move, while the Swedish background group has a variety of resources at their disposal when they move. Paper 3 analyses how housing tenure affects moving, and movers' destinations, in neighbourhoods with high concentrations of non-western foreign-born residents in Stockholm. By comparing two cohorts (1993-2000 and 2001-2008) it is analysed how this relationship develops over time. Housing tenure and income do not seem to be pivotal for who moves, but increasingly important for where movers end up. Results display ethnic differences and how the changing housing market in Stockholm reproduces ethnic segregation. Two main conclusions from the thesis are that (i) the changing housing regime in Stockholm produces stronger economic sorting of movers – this has been affected by the geographically, socioeconomically and ethnically uneven gains from the housing market transformations experienced over the last three decades. (ii) The residential mobility patterns and the economic stratification of residential mobility opportunities that the reconfiguration of Stockholm’s housing market gives rise to increases the economic, political and social marginalization of neighbourhoods characterized by low income levels and high shares of foreign-born residents. Combating ethnic segregation is today even more closely related to the socioeconomic differences between the foreign-born and native-born parts of the population.

  • Leaving poor neighbourhoods : the role of income and housing tenure
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Housing Studies. - : Routledge. - 0267-3037 .- 1466-1810. ; 36:7, s. 1122-1142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To date, few studies have adopted a particular focus on the role of housing tenure when analysing ethnic and socioeconomic differences in out-mobility from poor neighbourhoods. This study contributes to filling this gap. The paper uses a full population data set covering every individual residing in the capital region of Sweden during the period 2006-2008. The findings indicate that those with foreign background are dependent on housing wealth and higher income to be able to leave poor neighbourhoods when moving, while native Swedes seem to be less constrained by income. The results warrant efforts to broaden mix policy beyond the discussion on housing tenure if policy-makers want to counteract the ethnic and socioeconomic imbalances of residential mobility upholding segregation.

  • Out-mobility from Stockholm’s foreign-born concentration neighbourhoods – a study of two cohorts
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this study the central theme is how housing tenure affects moving from neighbourhoods with high concentrations of non-western foreign-born residents in Stockholm and, by comparing two cohorts (1993-2000 and 2001-2008), how this relationship between housing tenure, ethnic background and residential mobility develops over time. Attention is also given to the sorting of movers. The findings disclose that housing tenure’s effect on moving marginally varies between neighbourhood types, and earlier existing differences between housing tenures are reduced over time. Out-mobility destination data suggest that owning is important, and increasingly important, for moving towards areas with fewer non-western foreign-born residents. The findings show that housing tenure mix as a policy tool to counteract high mobility frequencies in distressed neighbourhoods is losing strength. Results indicate how the increasingly owner-dominated housing market in Stockholm reproduces ethnic segregation through stronger residential sorting by income and housing tenure.

  • Out-mobility from Stockholm's immigrant-dense neighbourhoods : a study of two cohorts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler. Series B, Human Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0435-3684 .- 1468-0467. ; 103:1, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The central themes of this study are how housing tenure affects moving away from neighbourhoods with differing degrees of immigrant concentration in Stockholm and, comparing two cohorts, how the relationship between housing tenure, ethnic background and residential mobility develops over time. The findings reveal that the effect of housing tenure on moving varies marginally between neighbourhood types, and differences between housing tenures are reduced over time. Residential mobility is increasingly associated with higher income levels and members of the non-western, foreign-born group are less likely to move when the housing market is increasingly owner dominated. These ethnic hierarchies also apply to residential sorting. The sorting of out-movers from neighbourhoods with high concentrations of immigrants is increasingly affected by income. However, the non-western, foreign-born group is also increasingly dependent on housing assets in order to leave immigrant-dense neighbourhoods, which is not the case for other groups. The results show a shift in the necessary resources for residential mobility trajectories for those at the bottom end of the ethnic hierarchy and indicate that the place-stratification framework needs to differentiate between different types of assets and population groups to enable a better understanding of residential sorting in a changing housing market.

  • Residential mobility and spatial sorting in Stockholm 1990-2014 : The changing importance of housing tenure and income
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International journal of housing policy. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1949-1247 .- 1949-1255. ; 22:2, s. 198-224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper an analysis of residential mobility and sorting by income and housing tenure in Stockholm is carried out. The study contrasts two periods: one (1990-2001) characterised by recovery after the economic crisis in 1991-1992 and one (2002-2014) characterised by large changes to the housing stock composition. With the use of a longitudinal full population data set, it is shown that the socioeconomic composition of movers is relatively stable over time, while the economic sorting of movers increases. People with low income are increasingly likely to move into low-income neighbourhoods, whether they move into the rental or owner segments of the housing market. Those who own their housing unit and mid- to high-income earners increasingly avoid moving to low-income neighbourhoods. The paper concludes that the increasingly owner-dominated housing market in Stockholm contributes to stronger socio-spatial residential patterns through the economic sorting of movers across the whole income scale.

  • Vilka typer av uppgifter gynnar elever som följer kursplanen i svenska som andraspråk? : En undersökning med data från de nationella proven i geografi
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Didactica Norge - tidsskrift for fagdidaktisk forsknings- og utviklingsarbeid i Norge. - : University of Oslo Library. - 1504-9922. ; 12:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Class-based preschool enrolment : social stratification and quality differences in the Swedish preschool market
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Education Inquiry. - : Routledge. - 2000-4508. ; 15:1, s. 104-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we analyse overarching patterns of social stratification in, and quality differences between, Swedish preschools. Drawing on a Bourdieusian social classification scheme, we evidence in what type of preschools different social groups enrol their children in, and to what extent Swedish preschool children encounter different levels of quality at municipal, for-profit and non-profit providers in the preschool market. The analysis employs individual register data from Statistics Sweden covering all families in Swedish preschools for the year 2019. This comprises information on approximately 510 000 children and 122 000 unique families. We use descriptive statistics, looking at over- and under-representation in enrolment patterns of 38 social groups along with quality indicators of different providers in terms of preschool size, teacher and staff ratio and the level of teachers with Swedish background. Results from this total population analysis of Swedish preschool enrolment reveal indicators of particular class practices, where upper- and middle-class families are overrepresented in both for-profit and non-profit preschools in contrast to working-class families. Simultaneously, private providers may not always deliver high standards of structural quality, which clouds the image of how quality is viewed by parents in general, and by upper- and middle-class families in particular.
