    • Background: Many patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) are not managed adequately, and we often fail to reach treatment targets. Aim: To investigate if knowledge of risk factors for CHD, measured by a questionnaire, would show any relation to advice to compliance to lifestyle changes to attain treatment goals and adherence to drug therapy. Method: Men and women <71 years who had had a cardiac event were screened consecutively (509) from the medical records. Responders (392) were interviewed, examined and received a questionnaire. Three hundred and forty-seven patients answered the questionnaire regarding their general knowledge of risk factors for CHD, compliance to lifestyle changes to attain treatment goals and adherence to drug therapy. Results: There were statistically significant correlations between general knowledge about risk factors for CHD and compliance to certain lifestyle changes: weight, physical activity, stress management, diet, attainment of lipid level goals and the likelihood of taking prescribed blood pressure-lowering drugs. General knowledge of risk factors had no correlation to blood glucose or blood pressure levels nor on smoking habits or treatment patterns for prescribed lipid- and blood glucose-lowering drugs. Conclusion: Knowledge correlates to patient behaviour with respect to some risk factors, which should be recognised in preventive programs.

    • Implementation of guidelines for coronary heart disease prevention is less optimal in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate if specific knowledge (patients' knowledge about their own coronary heart disease risk factors) would correlate to their adherence as measured by self-reported lifestyle changes, reaching defined treatment goals and adhering to treatment with prescribed drugs. The consecutive medical records of 509 men and women younger than 71 years, hospitalized for a cardiac event, were screened. Of these, 392 patients came for an interview and were subjected to a clinical examination. All patients received a questionnaire regarding their specific knowledge of risk factors and their adherence to lifestyle changes, which was completed by 347 patients. In addition, data were collected and analyzed on how their treatment goals were attained in 8 domains and their adherence to drug treatment. There were significant correlations between specific knowledge and self-reported lifestyle changes, the ability to reach treatment goals in all 8 domains, and adherence to prescribed drugs. Patients with coronary heart disease will benefit from increased specific knowledge of risk factors to adhere with lifestyle changes and prescribed medication after a cardiac event.

  • The use of a geological model in a cavern construction in limestone

    • Active design is an expression that has been used fore some years now. This paper will present a case study from an excavation of two cavern constructions (80m long x 16m wide x 12m high) and access tunnels in a Bryozoan limestone in southern Sweden. By using various geophysical survey methods like for instance resistivity soundings, in combination with core drilling and geophysical well logs a geological model of the proposed construction site could be created. In this process not only the geological composition was studied but also the physical properties of the limestone was investigated. The geological model gave indication of how the final design of the caverns should be carried out to overcome problems with fault zones and ground water intrusion. During the excavation of the limestone from the cavern rooms, geological surveys were carried out to assist in the event of a redesign of the cavern constructions. The active calibration of the geological model made it possible to change and reduce the reinforcement of the rock mass. Measurements of the overburden were also taken during the excavation to monitor the setting/compaction of the limestone cover. After the cavern constructions were completed but before the final lining of the rooms, the limestone exposed at cavern walls and roof were surveyed i.e. the induration and fracturing was determined. This was done in an attempt to calibrate and validate the geological model. By active design and calibration of the geological model during the complete excavation, it has been possible to optimize both the location as well as the final cavern design. For the purpose of this article it has also been possible to reveal the actual geological explanations supporting the basic geological model.

    • Galvanostatically electrodeposited coatings of pure Sb or co-deposited Sb and Sb2O3 nanoparticles, prepared from antimony tartrate solutions, were studied as anode materials in Li-ion batteries. It is demonstrated that the co-deposition of 20-25% (w/w) Sb2O3 results from a local pH increase at the cathode (due to protonation of liberated tartrate) in poorly buffered solutions. This causes precipitation of Sb2O3 nanoparticles and inclusion of some of the particles in the deposit where they become coated with a protecting layer of Sb. Chronopotentiometric cycling of the deposits, which also were characterized using, e.g., SEM, TEM, and XRD, clearly showed that the Sb2O3-containing deposits were superior as anode materials. While the Sb/Sb2O3 coatings exhibited a specific capacity close to the Sb theoretical value of 660 mA·h·g -1 during more than 50 cycles, the capacity for the Sb coatings gradually decreased to about 250 mA·h·g-1. This indicates that the influence of the significant volume changes present upon the formation and oxidation of Li3Sb was much smaller for the Sb/Sb2O3 nanoparticle coatings. The improved performance can be explained by significant formation of Sb2O3 during the reoxidation, the presence of smaller Sb particles in the Sb/Sb2O3 coatings, and the formation of buffering nanoparticles of Li2O in a matrix of Sb during the first reduction cycle for the Sb/Sb2O3 deposits.

  • Assortative mating and the evolution of desirability covariation

    • Mate choice lies dose to differential reproduction, the engine of evolution. Patterns of mate choice consequently have power to direct the course of evolution. Here we provide evidence suggesting one pattern of human mate choice-the tendency for mates to be similar in overall desirability-caused the evolution of a structure of correlations that we call the d factor. We use agent-based models to demonstrate that assortative mating causes the evolution of a positive manifold of desirability, d, such that an individual who is desirable as a mate along any one dimension tends to be desirable across all other dimensions. Further, we use a large cross-cultural sample with n = 14,478 from 45 countries around the world to show that this d-factor emerges in human samples, is a cross-cultural universal, and is patterned in a way consistent with an evolutionary history of assortative mating. Our results suggest that assortative mating can explain the evolution of a broad structure of human trait covariation.

  • Contrasting Computational Models of Mate Preference Integration Across 45 Countries

    • Humans express a wide array of ideal mate preferences. Around the world, people desire romantic partners who are intelligent, healthy, kind, physically attractive, wealthy, and more. In order for these ideal preferences to guide the choice of actual romantic partners, human mating psychology must possess a means to integrate information across these many preference dimensions into summaries of the overall mate value of their potential mates. Here we explore the computational design of this mate preference integration process using a large sample of n = 14,487 people from 45 countries around the world. We combine this large cross-cultural sample with agent-based models to compare eight hypothesized models of human mating markets. Across cultures, people higher in mate value appear to experience greater power of choice on the mating market in that they set higher ideal standards, better fulfill their preferences in choice, and pair with higher mate value partners. Furthermore, we find that this cross-culturally universal pattern of mate choice is most consistent with a Euclidean model of mate preference integration.

Drained organic forest soils in boreal and temperate climate zones are believed to be significant sources of the greenhouse gases (GHGs) carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), but the annual fluxes are still highly uncertain. Drained organic soils exemplify systems where many studies are still carried out with relatively small resources, several methodologies and manually operated systems, which further involve different options for the detailed design of the measurement and data analysis protocols for deriving the annual flux. It would be beneficial to set certain guidelines for how to measure and report the data, so that data from individual studies could also be used in synthesis work based on data collation and modelling. Such synthesis work is necessary for deciphering general patterns and trends related to, e.g., site types, climate, and management, and the development of corresponding emission factors, i.e. estimates of the net annual soil GHG emission and removal, which can be used in GHG inventories. Development of specific emission factors also sets prerequisites for the background or environmental data to be reported in individual studies. We argue that wide applicability greatly increases the value of individual studies. An overall objective of this paper is to support future monitoring campaigns in obtaining high-value data.We analysed peer-reviewed public cations presenting CO2, CH4 and N2O flux data for drained organic forest soils in boreal and temperate climate zones, focusing on data that have been used, or have the potential to be used, for estimating net annual soil GHG emissions and removals. We evaluated the methods used in data collection and identified major gaps in background or environmental data. Based on these, we formulated recommendations for future research.

    • Introduction: Seventy-nine percent of internet users use Facebook, and on average they access Facebook eight times a day (Greenwood et al., 2016). To put these numbers into perspective, according to Clement (2019), around 30% of the world's population uses this Online Social Network (OSN) site.Despite the constantly growing body of academic research on Facebook (Chou et al., 2009; Back et al., 2010; Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010; McAndrew and Jeong, 2012; Wilson et al., 2012; Krasnova et al., 2017), there remains limited research regarding the motivation behind Facebook use across different cultures. Our main goal was to collect data from a large cross-cultural sample of Facebook users to examine the roles of sex, age, and, most importantly, cultural differences underlying Facebook use.

    • Barnacles are sessile macro-invertebrates, found along rocky shores in coastal areas worldwide. The euryhaline bay barnacle Balanus improvisus (Darwin, 1854) (= Amphibalanus improvisus) can tolerate a wide range of salinities, but the molecular mechanisms underlying the osmoregulatory capacity of this truly brackish species are not well understood. Aquaporins are pore-forming integral membrane proteins that facilitate transport of water, small solutes and ions through cellular membranes, and that have been shown to be important for osmoregulation in many organisms. The knowledge of the function of aquaporins in crustaceans is, however, limited and nothing is known about them in barnacles. We here present the repertoire of aquaporins from a thecostracan crustacean, the barnacle B. improvisus, based on genome and transcriptome sequencing. Our analyses reveal that B. improvisus contains eight genes for aquaporins. Phylogenetic analysis showed that they represented members of the classical water aquaporins (Aqp1, Aqp2), the aquaglyceroporins (Glp1, Glp2), the unorthodox aquaporin (Aqp12) and the arthropod-specific big brain aquaporin (Bib). Interestingly, we also found two big brain-like proteins (BibL1 and BibL2) constituting a new group of aquaporins not yet described in arthropods. In addition, we found that the two water-specific aquaporins were expressed as C-terminal splice variants. Heterologous expression of some of the aquaporins followed by functional characterization showed that Aqp1 transported water and Glp2 water and glycerol, agreeing with the predictions of substrate specificity based on 3D modeling and phylogeny. To investigate a possible role for the B. improvisus aquaporins in osmoregulation, mRNA expression changes in adult barnacles were analysed after long-term acclimation to different salinities. The most pronounced expression difference was seen for AQP1 with a substantial (>100-fold) decrease in the mantle tissue in low salinity (3 PSU) compared to high salinity (33 PSU). Our study provides a base for future mechanistic studies on the role of aquaporins in osmoregulation. © 2017 Lind et al.
