  • Textile Building Blocks:Toward Simple, Modularized, and Standardized Smart Textile
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Smart Textiles. - Cham : Springer, Cham. - 9783319501239 - 9783319501246 ; , s. 303-331
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Textiles are pervasive in our life, covering human body and objects, as well as serving in industrial applications. In its everyday use of individuals, smart textile becomes a promising medium for monitoring, information retrieval, and interaction. While there are many applications in sport, health care, and industry, the state-of-the-art smart textile is still found only in niche markets. To gain mass-market capabilities, we see the necessity of generalizing and modularizing smart textile production and application development, which on the one end lowers the production cost and on the other end enables easy deployment. In this chapter, we demonstrate our initial effort in modularization. By devising types of universal sensing fabrics for conductive and non-conductive patches, smart textile construction from basic, reusable components can be made. Using the fabric blocks, we present four types of sensing modalities, including resistive pressure, capacitive, bioimpedance, and biopotential. In addition, we present a multi-channel textile–electronics interface and various applications built on the top of the basic building blocks by ‘cut and sew’ principle.

  • A Hierarchical Bayesian Approach to Modeling Heterogeneity in Speech Quality Assessment
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing. - 1558-7916 .- 1558-7924. ; 20:1, s. 136-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of objective speech quality measures generally involves fitting a model to subjective rating data. A typical data set comprises ratings generated by listening tests performed in different languages and across different laboratories. These factors as well as others, such as the sex and age of the talker, influence the subjective ratings and result in data heterogeneity. We use a linear hierarchical Bayes (HB) structure to account for heterogeneity. To make the structure effective, we develop a variational Bayesian inference for the linear HB structure that approximates not only the posterior over the model parameters, but also the model evidence. Using the approximate model evidence we are able to study and exploit the heterogeneity inducing factors in the Bayesian framework. The new approach yields a simple linear predictor with state-of-the-art predictive performance. Our experiments show that the new method compares favorably with systems based on more complex predictor structures such as ITU-T recommendation P.563, Bayesian MARS, and Gaussian processes.

  • SimpleSkin : towards multipurpose smart garments
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2015 ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing and Proceedings of the 2015 ACM International Symposium on Wearable Computers. - New York, New York, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450335744 - 9781450335782 ; , s. 241-244
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smart textiles have been researched in the lab over thelast 20 years. However, the gap between research andavailable mass-market products is huge. We identifychallenges that are the core reasons for this gap. Totackle these challenges, we present our work towards amultipurpose smart textile with dierent sensingmodalities. It separates the concern of developing textiles, electronics, infrastructure, and applications. Furthermore,it uses a similar application model as current smart-phonesallowing developers to create applications for the smarttextiles. We believe that this approach is capable ofmoving smart textiles from niche to mainstream.

  • A generic sensor fabric for multi-modal swallowing sensing in regular upper-body shirts
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2016 ACM International Symposium on Wearable Computers. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Digital Library. - 9781450344609 ; , s. 46-47
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate a generic fabric material as basis for resistive pressure and bio-impedance sensors and apply the fabric in a shirt collar for swallowing spotting. A pilot study confirmed the signal performance of both sensor types.
