  • A Co-Simulation Tool Applied to Hydraulic Percussion Units

    • In this dissertation, a co-simulation tool is presented that is meant to comprise a more comprehensive environment for modelling and simulation of hydraulic percussion units, which are used in hydraulic hammers and rock drills. These units generates the large impact forces, which are needed to demolish concrete structures in the construction industry or to fragment rock when drilling blast holes in mine drifting. This type of machinery is driven by fluid power and is by that dependent of coupled fluid-structure mechanisms for their operation. This tool consists of a 1D fluid system model, a 3D structural mechanic model and an interface to establish the fluid-structure couplings, which has in this work been applied to a hydraulic hammer. This approach will enable virtual prototyping during product development with an ambition to reduce the need for testing of physical prototypes, but also to facilitate more detailed studies of internal mechanisms. The tool has been implemented for two well-known simulation tools, and a co-simulation interface to enable communication between them has been devel-oped. The fluid system is simulated using the Hopsan simulation tool and the structural parts are simulated using the FE-simulation software LS-DYNA. The implementation of the co-simulation interface is based on the Functional Mock-up Interface standard in Hopsan and on the User Defined Feature module in LS-DYNA. The basic functions of the tool were first verified for a simple but relevant model comprising co-simulation of one component, and secondly co-simulation of two components were verified. These models were based on rigid body and linear elastic representation of the structural components. Further, it was experimentally validated using an existing hydraulic hammer product, where the responses from the experiments were compared to the corresponding simulated responses. To investigate the effects from a parameter change, the hammer was operated and simulated at four different running conditions. Dynamic simulation of the sealing gap, which is a fundamental mechanism used for controlling the percussive motion, was implemented to further enhance the simulated responses of the percussion unit. This implementation is based on a parametrisation of the deformed FE-model, where the gap height and the eccentric position are estimated from the deformed geometry in the sealing gap region, and then the parameters are sent to the fluid simulation for a more accurate calculation of the leakage flow. Wear in percussion units is an undesirable type of damage, which may cause significant reduction in performance or complete break-down, and today there are no methodology available to evaluate such damages on virtual prototypes. A method to study wear was developed using the co-simulation tool to simulate the fundamental behaviour of the percussion unit, and the wear routines in LS-DYNA were utilised for the calculation of wear.

    • In this study, a developed co-simulation method, which couples 1D-fluid and 3D-structural models, has been utilised to simulate wear in a hydraulic percussion unit. The effect of wear is generally detrimental on performance and lifetime for such units, but can also cause catastrophic failure and breakdown, requiring a total overhaul and replacement of core components. One experiment of standard straight impact was performed to investigate the tolerance against seizure. The percussion unit was operated at successively increasing operating pressures, and the level of wear was registered at each step, until seizure occurred. The co-simulation model was used to replicate the running conditions from the experiment to simulate the structural response to be used as input for the wear routine to calculate the wear depth. The wear pattern from the simulations corresponds well to the wear pattern from the experiment. Further, the effect of a misaligned impact on wear development was also studied, as this is a loading situation that typically occurs for hydraulic percussion units. The study demonstrates that the simulation method used has a potential for simulating wear and predicting seizure in hydraulic percussion units.

  • Microengineered CVD Diamond Surfaces : Tribology and Applications

    • Recent developments in thin film synthesis of diamond have facilitated a host of new technical applications. These are motivated by the many attractive properties of diamond, for example high hardness, chemical inertness, transparency and heat conductivity. Unfortunately, these properties also make it difficult to fashion complex geometries. Other problems are the severely limited choice of suitable substrate materials and large surface roughness. To reduce these complications, a technology denoted replication and bodybuilding has been developed. The basic principle is to grow the diamond film onto a mold and then build a mechanical support on top of the diamond film. Then the mold is removed. Thereby, a diamond surface with the desired 3D geometry and the same surface roughness as the mold is created.Three potential applications for devices built using the replication and bodybuilding concept have been explored. Grinding tools for hard materials have proved superior to conventional technology in rate of removal as well as in resulting surface finish. Diamond surfaces have also been crafted into ultra-durable dies for injection molding of hard particle reinforced polymers. Initial testing of an abrasive diamond device, intended to make CMP processes more economical and easier to control has successfully been carried out.Diamond and diamond-like carbon is well-known for being “low-friction materials”, but are here demonstrated to actually be “high-friction materials” with the ability to disguise themselves in certain environments, most notably with the aid of water molecules. The mechanisms involved in these variations have been investigated. Using NEXAFS it is shown that high friction sliding is accompanied by changes in the material structure. These changes are induced by surface roughness as well as by strong adhesive forces.Highly hydrogenated carbon coatings, on the other hand, affording super-low friction coefficients (<0.01) under certain circumstances, will suffer an increase in friction in the presence of water.

  • Estimation of crowd behaviour using sensor networks and sensor fusion

    • Commonly, surveillance operators are today monitoring a large number of CCTV screens, trying to solve the complex cognitive tasks of analyzing crowd behavior and detecting threats and other abnormal behavior. Information overload is a rule rather than an exception. Moreover, CCTV footage lacks important indicators revealing certain threats, and can also in other respects be complemented by data from other sensors. This article presents an approach to automatically interpret sensor data and estimate behaviors of groups of people in order to provide the operator with relevant warnings. We use data from distributed heterogeneous sensors (visual cameras and a thermal infrared camera), and process the sensor data using detection algorithms. The extracted features are fed into a hidden Markov model in order to model normal behavior and detect deviations. We also discuss the use of radars for weapon detection.

  • Fusion of Acoustic and Optical Sensor Data for Automatic Fight Detection in Urban Environments

    • We propose a two-stage method for detection of abnormal behaviours, such as aggression and fights in urban environment, which is applicable to operator support in surveillance applications. The proposed method is based on fusion of evidence from audio and optical sensors. In the first stage, a number of modalityspecific detectors perform recognition of low-level events. Their outputs act as input to the second stage, which performs fusion and disambiguation of the firststage detections. Experimental evaluation on scenes from the outdoor part of the PROMETHEUS database demonstrated the practical viability of the proposed approach. We report a fight detection rate of 81% when both audio and optical information are used. Reduced performance is observed when evidence from audio data is excluded from the fusion process. Finally, in the case when only evidence from one camera is used for detecting the fights, the recognition performance is poor.

  • Radiative lifetimes of metastable states of negative ions

    • We present a technique for measuring the radiative lifetimes of metastable states of negative ions that involves the use of a heavy-ion storage ring. The method has been applied to investigate the radiative decay of the np(3) P-2(1/2) levels of Te-(n=5) and Se-(n=4) and the 3p(3) D-2 state of Si- for which the J=3/2 and 5/2 levels were unresolved. All of these states are metastable and decay primarily by emission of E2 and M1 radiation. Multi Configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of rates for the transitions in Te- and Se- yielded lifetimes of 0.45 s and 4.7 s, respectively. The measured values agree well with these predicted values. In the case of the D-2 state of Si-, however, our measurement was only able to set a lower limit on the lifetime. The upper limit of the lifetime that can be measured with our apparatus is set by how long the ions can be stored in the ring, a limit determined by the rate of collisional detachment. Our lower limit of 1 min for the lifetime of the D-2 state is consistent with both the calculated lifetimes of 162 s for the D-2(3/2) level and 27.3 h for the D-2(5/2) level reported by O'Malley and Beck and 14.5 h and 12.5 h, respectively, from our Breit-Pauli calculations.

  • Masshantering : indikatorer och nyckeltal för incitament för reducerad klimatpåverkan vid upphandling

    • Metodik för styrning av cirkulär masshantering i Trafikverket är inriktad på moment som genomförs i projekteringsskedet. Det saknas metodik för hur indikatorer och nyckeltal kan föras över till entreprenaden. För att förbättra krav och incitament i entreprenadupphandling måste krav som är upphandlingsbara och uppföljningsbara i entreprenaden utvecklas. Syftet med detta projekt är att, i en förstudie, ta fram förslag på indikatorer och nyckeltal för upphandling som kan användas för att sätta krav och ge incitament som kan föras in i Trafikverkets upphandlingar för att förbättra masshanteringen, såväl i planeringen av projekt som i själva utförandet. De krav och incitament som på längre sikt ska arbetas fram ska kunna användas vid upphandlingar och därmed bidra till att entreprenörer kommer att arbeta mer cirkulärt, hållbart och innovativt med masshantering än i dagsläget. Huvudsyftet är att upphandlingsförfarandet ska bidra till att uppnå Trafikverkets mål att infrastrukturen ska vara klimatneutral senast år 2045. Arbetet utgörs av en omvärldsanalys som baseras på internationell och nationell litteratur, masshanteringsrapportering samt intervjuer. Från omvärldsanalysen framgår att regelverken kring uppgrävda massor inte är tydlig, men att massorna klassas som avfall i de flesta länder. Detta leder i sin tur till att massorna inte återvinns i så hög grad som är teoretiskt möjligt och inte heller så högt upp som möjligt i värdekedjan. För att förbättra detta krävs tydligare incitament, indikatorer och nyckeltal samt redovisningsverktyg och guidande material från Trafikverket. I detta projekt har förslag på indikatorer och nyckeltal tagits fram. Dessutom har en Excelbaserad prototyp för hur flera av dessa kan redovisas tagits fram. Denna ska när den färdigställts kunna användas såväl inför en upphandling som för att användas för att följa upp och utvärdera masshantering i ett projekt. Rapporten ger också förslag på fortsatt arbete för att utveckla prototypen för utvärdering av masshantering på projektnivå och ur ett samhällsekonomiskt perspektiv.

    • This paper reports an experimental investigation of the electron impact detachment of C−4. We observe structure in the electron impact cross section for detaching a single electron from a C−4 cluster anion, which we attribute to the formation and decay of the C2−4 dianion. The system is energetically unstable and very rapidly decays via double autodetachment. The energy and width of the resonance were determined to be 8.8(5) eV and 1.4(5) eV, respectively, and the resonance lies 1.5(5) eV above the ground state of the neutral system. The experiment was conducted by merging monoenergetic electron and ion beams in the heavy ion storage ring CRYRING. The detachment channel was monitored by detecting neutral C4 fragments.

    • Absolute cross sections for single and double detachment from H- following electron impact have been measured over a range of collision energies from the thresholds to 170 eV. The measurements were made using a magnetic storage ring. The ions in the ring were merged with a monoenergetic electron beam and neutral and positively charged fragments were detected. We cover larger energy ranges than in many of the previous experiments, and this is the first time both single and double detachment have been measured simultaneously. This allows us to present accurate ratios between the single and double detachment cross sections. On the basis of these ratio measurements we discuss possible mechanisms leading to double detachment.
