  • The Baltic Sea as a time machine for the future coastal ocean
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2375-2548. ; 4:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coastal global oceans are expected to undergo drastic changes driven by climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressures in coming decades. Predicting specific future conditions and assessing the best management strategies to maintain ecosystem integrity and sustainable resource use are difficult, because of multiple interacting pressures, uncertain projections, and a lack of test cases for management. We argue that the Baltic Sea can serve as a time machine to study consequences and mitigation of future coastal perturbations, due to its unique combination of an early history of multistressor disturbance and ecosystem deterioration and early implementation of cross-border environmental management to address these problems. The Baltic Sea also stands out in providing a strong scientific foundation and accessibility to long-term data series that provide a unique opportunity to assess the efficacy of management actions to address the breakdown of ecosystem functions. Trend reversals such as the return of top predators, recovering fish stocks, and reduced input of nutrient and harmful substances could be achieved only by implementing an international, cooperative governance structure transcending its complex multistate policy setting, with integrated management of watershed and sea. The Baltic Sea also demonstrates how rapidly progressing global pressures, particularly warming of Baltic waters and the surrounding catchment area, can offset the efficacy of current management approaches. This situation calls for management that is (i) conservative to provide a buffer against regionally unmanageable global perturbations, (ii) adaptive to react to new management challenges, and, ultimately, (iii) multisectorial and integrative to address conflicts associated with economic trade-offs.

  • Antimicrobial susceptibility of invasive pneumococcal isolates from a region in south-west Sweden 1998-2001.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of infectious diseases. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5548 .- 1651-1980. ; 39:1, s. 19-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Invasive disease caused by antibiotic resistant pneumococci is a worldwide problem. All invasive pneumococcal strains in an area of south-west Sweden with 1.7 million inhabitants were collected prospectively during 1998-2001. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined by E-test and correlated to serotypes and clinical characteristics. Of 827 strains, 744 (90%) were susceptible (S) to all agents tested and 83 (10%) were indeterminate (I) or resistant (R) to at least 1 agent. 22 isolates (2.7%) were I to penicillin (MIC >0.06 to < or = 1.0 mg/l), but none were R (MIC >1.0 mg/l). Numbers and proportions of decreased susceptibility against other agents tested were as follows: erythromycin R: 30 (3.6%), clindamycin R: 6 (0.7%), tetracycline R: 16 (1.9%), moxifloxacin R: 1 (0.1%), cotrimoxazole I: 17 (2%) and R: 31(4%). Non-susceptibility to at least 1 agent was not correlated with age, clinical manifestation, underlying diseases and outcome. The serotype distribution differed between non-susceptible and susceptible strains. The serotypes in the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine covered 42% of all infections and 73% of those caused by non-susceptible strains. In conclusion, the impact of antibiotic resistance in invasive pneumococcal disease remains limited in south-west Sweden.

  • Broad variability in pharmacokinetics of GH following rhGH injections in children
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Growth Hormone & Igf Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1096-6374 .- 1532-2238. ; 40, s. 61-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Daily subcutaneous self-injection of GH is used worldwide to treat short stature in childhood; longitudinal data on the impact of this regimen on GH-uptake are lacking. Design: Children with/without GH-deficiency participating in clinical trials were followed prospectively ( s 8 times). Blood was sampled pre-GH-injection (dose GH(33)/GH(67) mu g/kg) and either every 30 min thereafter for 24 h (Experimental-setting; 59 GH-curves/15 children); or every 2 h thereafter for 16 h (Clinical-setting; 429 GHcurves/117 children). Pharmacokinetics were estimated by time T-max (h) of maximal GH-concentration (C-max , mU/L) and area under the curve for 16 h (AUC, mU/L * h). Results: In the Clinical-setting, median C-max was 71 mU/L and AUC was 534 mU/L * h, with coefficients of variation for intra-individual variation of 39% and 36%, respectively, and inter-individual variation of 44% and 42%, respectively. 43% of C-max and AUC variability was explained by GH-dose and proxies for injection depth (baseline GH-level, GH(peak) width, BMISDS). In the Experimental- versus Clinical-setting, 85% and 40% of GH-curves, respectively, reached zero-levels within 24 h. A longer duration was found following a more superficial GH-injection. Spontaneous GH-peaks were identified already 6 h after the GH-injection in about half of the curves of both GHD and non-GHD patients. Conclusion: Very broad intra-individual and inter-individual variability was found. A high GH-peak will optimize growth effects; the highest C-max was found after a deep injection of GH at the higher dose and concentration. In as many as 60% of the children, GH remained detectable in serum after 24 h; a constant GH-level will promote IGF-I and metabolic effects.

  • Vitamin D status in children over three decades - Do children get enough vitamin D?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Bone Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-1872. ; 5, s. 150-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vitamin D is a key player in the endocrine regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism and plays a pivotal role in the acquisition of bone mass during childhood. This study investigated long-term data of vitamin D levels in children and adolescents between 1 and 18 years of age. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was analyzed between 1982 and 2013 in 2048 Swedish Caucasian children (mean age ± SD, 8.59 ± 3.68 years; 1197 boys). Overall, 704 (34%) children had below recommended levels of 50 nmol/L; however, only 63 (3%) had levels below 25 nmol/L, i.e., vitamin D deficiency. No trend for decreased vitamin D levels over time was found in this population, with median 25(OH)D levels of 58.4 nmol/L, minimum-maximum 5.0-159.3 nmol/L. Younger children, independent of gender, had significantly higher levels 25(OH)D. © 2016.

  • Digital Diasporas : An Overview of the Research Areas of Migrationand New Media Through a Narrative Literature Review
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Human Technology. - : University of Jyväskylä, Finland. - 1795-6889. ; 15:2, s. 142-180
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Academic research on migration and the use of new media constitutes a growing field. The first studies dealing explicitly with the field appeared in the end of the 1990s. Now, it has become an established research area. The impact and importance of the new technologies for migrants is well established. Appropriation of ICTs and new media environments have become a ubiquitous feature of everyday life in migrant groups. The research area is still understudied, characterized by rapid changes and shifts, and is shaped by the changing structural conditions of migrants and the proliferation of forms of media. In this article, I provide an overview of the developing research area through a review of the existing literature on migration and the use of new media. I elaborate the various aspects of the research field, the research category, current themes and topics, theoretical and conceptual discussions, and methodological approaches

  • The Kolkata Intellectuals and Bengali Modernity
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim with this thesis is to explore and enhance the understanding of methodological questions in anthropological analysis. I focus my main argument on topics taken up in antiorientalist and postcolonial approaches. Analysis is closely related to political issues and an analysis include a critical reflection and deconstruction. The discussion is elaborated through the Kolkata intellectuals and Bengali Modernity. The Kolkata intellectuals are vehicles of change, transmitters of ideas and they have had a key function in social, political, cultural and intellectual movements in Bengal during the last centuries. They have played an instrumental role in the construction of discourses and paradigms in Bengal, or Bengali Modernity, a concept introduced by the Subaltern Studies group to denote the new configurations that appeared in the colonial encounter. The Subaltern Studies group claimed that Bengali Modernity was a unique construction, not comparable to western modernity. Hence, the methods of analysis should reflect the Bengali reality and not western conceptions of modernity. The subaltern studies group, influenced by a postcolonial approach, used a post-modern method to analyse Bengali modernity. However, a post- modern approach leads to a series of negative consequences. My analysis of the Kolkata intellectuals and Bengali modernity extends on this discussion and suggests that a phenomenological method gives the correct device to analyse the Kolkata intellectuals and Bengali modernity, providing a better framework to handle issues such as relativism and the formation of the subject than the post- modern approach. On a theoretical level, an examination of the Kolkata intellectuals and the processes and mechanisms included in the construction of Bengali modernity contributes to a greater understanding and knowledge of the dynamics involved in processes of change and development. On an empirical level, this study, based on extensive fieldwork and comprehensive archival research, gives a wider insight into intellectuals and intellectual groups in Kolkata. Studies of contemporary intellectual groups and contemporary aspects of society and life in Kolkata is a rather neglected area.
